Chapter 9 - The Woman in the PhotographThe storage box was inside a small seaside chapel.

Nobody visited it.

Nobody knew Elena had ever been there.

Inside were clothes, a passport, medical records, and a stack of photographs.

Adrian opened the first.

Elena.

Alive.

Different.

Hair shorter.

Face thinner.

Standing outside a clinic.

The date was three months after the crash.

Adrian sat down hard.

Marcus looked over his shoulder.

"There are dozens."

Elena had been alive.

For months.

Maybe years.

Until now.

Adrian found another photograph.

Lily as a baby.

Elena holding her.

On the back:

She cannot grow up thinking fear is love.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Then a second image appeared.

Elena standing beside Victor.

A hospital entrance.

Then a third.

A woman in a wheelchair.

Her face hidden.

Adrian turned the photo over.

April 14.

No name.

Another envelope contained medical bills.

All paid through a shell company.

The company belonged to Voss Meridian.

But the payments had been approved by Grant.

Adrian's hands shook.

"Grant knew."

Marcus nodded.

"At least about the treatment."

Adrian opened another file.

A handwritten note:

Grant knows I survived. He thinks he can use Lily to force Adrian to obey.

Another:

Vanessa doesn't know the whole truth.

Another:

Daniel knows everything.

Adrian looked at the final page.

I am alive because Victor moved me before they found me.

Then:

I stayed away because Adrian was becoming more dangerous than the people hunting me.

Adrian stared at the words.

Marcus sat silently.

"She was afraid of me."

"Yes."

Adrian looked angry.

"Why didn't she come back?"

Marcus answered carefully.

"Because she believed you would never stop."

"Stop what?"

"Controlling."

Adrian looked at him.

Marcus continued.

"You put cameras in every hallway."

"After Lily was born."

"You tracked Elena's car."

"Because of threats."

"You monitored her phone."

"Because I thought she was in danger."

"You searched her office."

"Because I thought someone was using her."

Marcus paused.

"From your point of view, every act made sense."

Adrian's voice dropped.

"And from hers?"

"It looked like a prison."

The room fell silent.

Then a sound came from behind them.

A woman breathing.

Adrian spun around.

The chapel doorway stood open.

A figure stood there.

Black coat.

Dark glasses.

A scarf covering her hair.

She slowly removed the glasses.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Four years disappeared in one second.

"Elena."

Her face was pale.

Older.

But unmistakable.

She looked at him without moving.

Adrian took one step.

Elena stepped back.

"No."

He froze.

"I've spent years trying to find you."

"I know."

"Why?"

"Because I needed to know whether you had changed."

Adrian's voice broke.

"I saved Lily."

"I know."

"I'd have done anything for her."

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

"That's exactly what I was afraid of."

Adrian stood perfectly still.

Then Elena said the words that shattered him.

"I didn't disappear because someone wanted me dead."

She took a breath.

"I disappeared because I was afraid of what you would become trying to keep me alive."

Before Adrian could answer, headlights swept across the chapel windows.

Elena looked toward the road.

Her face changed.

"They found us."

"Who?"

She whispered:

"Daniel."

May you like

The chapel doors slammed open.

And gunfire erupted outside.
