Chapter 3 - The Man Who Refused to Come BackMarcus Reed lived two hours outside the city in a house surrounded by pine trees.

Adrian arrived with four vehicles.

Marcus opened the door before anyone knocked.

He looked older.

Thinner.

His right hand shook slightly.

"You shouldn't have come."

Adrian stepped inside.

"You knew Lily would be attacked."

"I knew someone might try."

"Who?"

Marcus stared at him.

"You still think names solve everything."

Adrian's eyes hardened.

"Don't lecture me."

"I'm not."

Marcus walked toward the kitchen.

"I'm warning you."

Adrian followed.

"About Vanessa?"

Marcus stopped.

"About everyone."

Marcus opened a cabinet.

Inside were old surveillance drives.

Dozens.

Adrian stared.

"Why do you have those?"

"Because after Elena died, I stopped trusting company storage."

"You stole my files."

"I saved your files."

Marcus placed one drive on the table.

"This is from the night Elena died."

Adrian went silent.

Four years earlier.

Elena had been found dead after a late-night car crash.

The police had ruled it accidental.

The company had called it a tragedy.

Adrian had believed it.

Until now.

Marcus connected the drive.

Video appeared.

A black-and-white security camera.

Voss Meridian headquarters.

11:42 p.m.

Elena walked through a corridor carrying a file.

Then another figure entered.

Grant.

Adrian's face tightened.

Grant followed Elena into a conference room.

The door closed.

No sound.

Twenty minutes passed.

Then Elena emerged.

She looked furious.

Grant remained inside.

Marcus paused the video.

"You never saw this?"

"No."

"They removed it."

"Who?"

"Your own security department."

Adrian stared at him.

"Who ordered the deletion?"

Marcus looked at him.

"You did."

Adrian stepped back.

"What?"

"You authorized a system-wide data purge the morning after Elena died."

"I was grieving."

"I know."

"Why would I erase footage of her?"

"Because you thought the footage showed you."

Adrian's expression changed.

"What are you talking about?"

Marcus opened another folder.

Inside were dozens of images.

Emails.

Security logs.

A schedule.

And one photograph.

Elena standing outside Adrian's private office.

The timestamp was the night before her death.

"She had been investigating money moving through three Voss Meridian subsidiaries," Marcus said.

"How much?"

"Enough to bankrupt the company if regulators found out."

Adrian looked at the files.

"That makes no sense. Voss Meridian was profitable."

"It was profitable because someone was hiding the losses."

"Grant?"

Marcus shook his head.

"Grant was a courier."

Adrian stared at him.

"A courier for who?"

Marcus hesitated.

Then he placed another photograph on the table.

A man beside Grant.

Adrian recognized him instantly.

Daniel Cross.

Voss Meridian's chief financial officer.

Adrian's oldest business partner.

The man who had helped him build the company from the beginning.

Adrian's phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

You should have left Elena's room closed.

Another message arrived.

You are already being watched.

Then a third.

Ask yourself why the resort footage was copied instead of destroyed.

Adrian looked toward the windows.

The trees outside were still.

Too still.

Marcus stepped closer.

"Adrian."

"What?"

"There's something you need to understand."

Marcus lowered his voice.

"Elena wasn't trying to destroy your company."

Adrian stared at him.

"What was she trying to do?"

"Save it."

"From who?"

Marcus looked straight into his eyes.

"From you."

Adrian said nothing.

Marcus continued.

"Elena discovered what you were planning."

"I wasn't planning anything."

Marcus reached for another file.

"I didn't say you knew."

He opened it.

A document appeared on screen.

An emergency executive authorization.

Signed by Adrian.

Four years ago.

The date was three weeks before Elena's death.

And the final instruction read:

In the event of internal betrayal, all disputed assets are to be transferred to Grant Voss under emergency authority.

Adrian stared at his own signature.

He remembered signing the document.

But he couldn't remember why.

Then Marcus said the words that shattered everything.

"Elena found this before she died."
