Chapter 10 - Elena's Final RuleThey escaped through an underground passage beneath the chapel.

Elena knew the route.
She moved quickly despite years of hiding.
Adrian followed behind her.
For the first time in four years, he was close enough to reach for her.
But he didn't.
He remembered what she had said.
Control could become a prison.
They reached an old fisherman’s cottage near the cliffs.
Inside, Elena locked the door.
Marcus checked the windows.
Adrian stood in the center of the room.
"I need to know everything."
Elena looked at him.
"You need to hear everything."
She sat down.
"The company was being drained through shell subsidiaries."
"Daniel."
"Daniel was the architect."
"Grant?"
"Grant helped move assets."
"Vanessa?"
"Vanessa helped him access family information."
"And you?"
"I found them."
"Why didn't you expose them?"
"Because I found something worse."
Adrian said nothing.
Elena reached into a drawer.
She removed a small envelope.
Inside was a copy of Adrian's emergency security protocol.
"This."
Adrian stared.
"You created a system that could seize accounts, lock employees out, track communications, and authorize emergency transfers without board approval."
"I created it for hostile takeovers."
"I know."
"Then Daniel abused it."
"Yes."
Elena looked at him.
"But you never understood the dangerous part."
"What?"
"You could activate it against anyone."
Adrian frowned.
"I never did."
"You didn't need to."
Elena placed a second document in front of him.
It listed employees who had raised questions about Daniel's finances.
Some were fired.
Some were investigated.
Some disappeared from the company.
Every action had been triggered through Adrian's emergency authority.
Adrian looked sick.
"Who submitted these requests?"
"Daniel."
"Using my signature."
"Yes."
Adrian's hands tightened.
"So he framed me."
"Not exactly."
Elena's eyes were steady.
"He used your real system."
Adrian looked at her.
"Meaning?"
"Your obsession with control made it possible."
Silence.
Elena continued.
"Daniel knew that if the system was ever exposed, people would believe Adrian Voss personally approved everything."
Adrian looked at the documents.
"And you realized this."
"Yes."
"So you planned to expose him."
"Yes."
"Then why disappear?"
"Because I found out he wasn't the only person who knew."
Adrian looked up.
"Who else?"
She hesitated.
"You."
He stared.
"I discovered Daniel's accounts because you asked me to investigate internal leaks."
Adrian nodded slowly.
"You told me you suspected someone on the board."
"I did."
"But you didn't tell me what you found."
"I was trying to."
"Why didn't you?"
Elena looked away.
"Because I realized the moment I showed you the evidence, you'd destroy everything connected to them."
"Yes."
She looked back.
"That was the problem."
Adrian's voice became quiet.
"I would have protected you."
"No."
"You don't know that."
"I do."
"How?"
"Because I saw what happened to people who crossed you."
Adrian had no answer.
Then Elena pulled out one final document.
"The resort attack was not supposed to happen."
Adrian looked up sharply.
"Then what was it?"
"A test."
"Of what?"
"Whether you would use your security network."
Adrian understood.
The missing footage.
The copied video.
The manipulated cameras.
"They wanted me to activate the emergency system."
"Yes."
"And if I did?"
"Daniel could take control of the company's contested assets."
Adrian stared.
"And Lily's trust?"
Elena nodded.
"The moment the system was triggered against the attackers, Lily's trust activated."
"Why?"
"Because I built a legal condition into it."
Adrian looked confused.
Elena smiled sadly.
"If you responded to the attack by using the same machinery that nearly destroyed us, the trust would move control away from you."
Adrian's face went pale.
"To Lily."
"Yes."
He stared at her.
"And Daniel knew."
"He knew enough to be desperate."
Adrian suddenly understood.
The resort attack wasn't about hurting Lily.
It was about controlling his reaction.
That was why the camera was copied.
That was why the evidence appeared.
That was why every clue led him toward Vanessa and Grant.
They wanted him angry.
They wanted him predictable.
They wanted Adrian Voss to become the monster everyone already believed he was.
Elena reached across the table.
"I didn't build the trust to punish you."
"Then why?"
"To give Lily a chance to grow up free."
Adrian looked down.
His phone buzzed.
A text from an unknown number.
YOUR DAUGHTER IS SAFE.
A second message appeared.
BUT ELENA WON'T BE.
Then a photograph arrived.
Lily.
Sitting alone in the secure house.
And behind her stood Daniel Cross.
Elena saw the photograph.
May you like
Her face went white.
"They have her."
