Chapter 2 - The Letter Inside the RabbitAdrian did not sleep that night.

Lily slept in the presidential suite, surrounded by three security guards and a nanny who had been with the family since Lily was born.
Adrian remained awake in the sitting room.
He watched the same security report for the twenty-third time.
At 2:13 p.m., Lily entered the pool terrace.
At 2:17, Vanessa moved toward her.
At 2:18, the camera feed distorted.
At 2:19, the footage disappeared.
At 2:20, Adrian arrived.
One missing minute.
Only one.
One minute was enough to bury a crime.
Adrian called the resort's owner.
Then the head of security.
Then his own technology division.
Nobody had an explanation.
By sunrise, the official version had already begun circulating.
Lily had slipped.
Vanessa had tried to catch her.
Adrian had overreacted.
It was a family misunderstanding.
Adrian hated that phrase.
Family misunderstanding.
It was always what people called betrayal when they wanted everyone to stay quiet.
At seven in the morning, he entered Lily's bedroom.
She was sitting on the floor with her stuffed rabbit.
Her dark hair was tangled around her face.
"Daddy?"
"Yes?"
"Are we going home?"
"Yes."
"Today?"
"Today."
She hugged the rabbit.
Adrian crouched beside her.
"Sweetheart, yesterday Aunt Vanessa said something about your mommy."
Lily became very still.
"What did she say?"
Lily looked at the rabbit.
"Mommy said not to tell."
Adrian's heart sank.
"Tell me now."
Lily slowly opened the rabbit's back.
A tiny zipper ran underneath its fur.
Adrian frowned.
Lily pulled out a folded piece of paper.
"I found it in Mommy's box."
"What box?"
"The one Daddy never opens."
Adrian stared at the paper.
Elena's handwriting.
He would have recognized it anywhere.
His fingers trembled as he unfolded it.
Only six lines.
Adrian,
If Lily ever gives you this, something has gone wrong.
Do not trust anyone who tells you Elena's investigation ended with her death.
The first lie will concern the resort.
The second will concern the company.
The third will concern you.
Do not protect your family until you know which family you're protecting.
Adrian read the message twice.
Then a third time.
"Where did you find this?"
Lily pointed toward the wall.
"In Mommy's old room."
Adrian stood.
Elena's room had been untouched for almost four years.
Not because he loved memory.
Because he feared it.
He had converted the room into a sealed private archive after her death.
Nobody entered without permission.
Not Vanessa.
Not Grant.
Not Lily.
At least, nobody was supposed to.
Adrian went there immediately.
The room smelled faintly of lavender.
Elena had kept a small desk beside the window.
Adrian opened the drawers.
Nothing.
He checked the floor.
Nothing.
Then he noticed something unusual.
One of the shelves was slightly crooked.
He pulled it.
A panel moved.
Behind it sat a narrow metal case.
The lock was already broken.
Inside was a black USB drive.
There was also a photograph.
Elena stood beside Adrian in front of Voss Meridian headquarters.
On the back, she had written:
He will tell you it was me.
Adrian felt cold.
He inserted the USB into the laptop.
One folder appeared.
ELENA_17
Inside were three files.
The first was encrypted.
The second was a financial spreadsheet.
The third was a video.
Adrian clicked it.
Elena appeared on screen.
She was sitting in this exact room.
Her face looked tired.
Terrified.
But she was alive.
"Adrian," she said quietly.
He stopped breathing.
"I don't know when you're going to watch this."
Elena looked directly into the camera.
"If you're seeing this, then I failed."
Adrian leaned toward the screen.
Her voice dropped.
"Someone inside the family is helping them."
He froze.
"Don't ask who."
Elena looked toward the door.
"Because the person helping them isn't the most dangerous person in the room."
The video suddenly glitched.
Elena's face vanished.
Black screen.
Then one sentence appeared.
ASK MARCUS REED WHAT HAPPENED IN THE BASEMENT.
Adrian's pulse accelerated.
Marcus Reed had been his head of security for fourteen years.
He had disappeared six months after Elena's death.
Adrian had never understood why.
He called an old number.
It rang once.
Then twice.
On the third ring, someone answered.
Marcus did not say hello.
He said only:
"You found her message."
Adrian stood frozen.
"How do you know?"
A long silence.
Then Marcus whispered:
"Because Elena made me promise."
Adrian gripped the phone.
"Promise what?"
"That if Lily was ever attacked, I would stop protecting you."
The line went dead.
Adrian stared at the phone.
May you like
For the first time in his life, he wondered whether Elena's greatest fear had never been the people threatening her.
Maybe it had been him.
