Chapter 1 - The Girl at the EdgeLily Voss was five years old when she learned that smiling could be more dangerous than crying.

She stood barefoot beside the infinity pool of the Aurelia Grand Resort, surrounded by white stone, glass railings, expensive flowers, and people dressed as if the world had never given them a reason to be afraid.

Her pink birthday dress was soaked from the waist down.

Her cheeks were wet.

But she was not crying anymore.

Aunt Vanessa had told her to stop being dramatic.

Grant had laughed when Lily slipped.

And now Vanessa's hand rested between Lily's shoulder blades.

"Stand up straight."

Lily looked over her shoulder.

"Please don't."

Vanessa's smile remained perfectly composed.

Guests nearby continued talking.

Nobody noticed.

Or perhaps nobody wanted to.

The Aurelia Grand was a place where people learned very quickly what not to notice.

Vanessa Voss leaned closer.

"You embarrassed me in front of everyone."

"I said I was sorry."

"You always say you're sorry."

Lily glanced toward the main terrace.

Her father wasn't there.

Adrian had stepped away twenty minutes earlier to take a call.

Twenty minutes.

That was all it took for everything to change.

Grant Voss approached from behind, holding a champagne glass.

He was Vanessa's husband, one of Adrian's cousins, and the man who had spent years pretending to be harmless.

He looked at Lily.

"She's still doing it?"

Vanessa nodded.

"She refuses to behave."

Grant laughed softly.

Lily backed away.

Her heel touched the narrow stone lip beside the infinity pool.

Beyond it, there was a steep drop toward the lower garden.

The resort's pool had been built on a cliffside.

One wrong step.

One push.

And the stone terrace below was six meters away.

Lily stared at the drop.

"Please."

Vanessa's voice turned cold.

"Your father isn't here."

Lily froze.

Grant took a slow sip.

"Maybe she should learn what happens when she lies."

Lily shook her head.

"I didn't lie."

Vanessa's fingers pressed harder into her back.

"Then tell us."

"Tell you what?"

"What your mother told you."

The color drained from Lily's face.

"My mommy didn't tell me anything."

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

Grant stopped laughing.

"What did Elena tell you?" he asked.

Lily whispered, "Mommy said Aunt Vanessa was not supposed to know."

Vanessa went completely still.

Then she pushed.

Lily stumbled forward.

Her tiny foot slid over the edge.

For one terrible second, she disappeared from the terrace.

A scream tore across the resort.

"LILY!"

Adrian Voss came running.

He was still wearing the dark suit he had arrived in that morning, his tie loose, phone hanging from one hand.

He reached the edge just as Lily's fingers slipped from the stone.

Adrian threw himself forward.

His hand caught her wrist.

Her body swung over empty air.

"Dad!"

"I've got you!"

Adrian pulled her upward with both arms and dragged her onto the terrace.

Lily immediately buried herself against his chest.

Adrian's breathing was violent.

His eyes moved from Lily to Vanessa.

Then to Grant.

Nobody spoke.

The entire terrace had gone silent.

Vanessa raised both hands.

"Adrian, she slipped."

Adrian stared at her.

"You touched her."

"I was trying to help."

"You pushed her."

"No."

Grant stepped forward.

"Adrian, calm down."

Adrian's eyes snapped toward him.

"Don't tell me to calm down."

Security guards rushed onto the terrace.

Adrian pointed toward the cameras.

"Pull every angle. Now."

The resort security manager swallowed.

"Mr. Voss..."

"Now."

The man nodded and ran.

Adrian picked Lily up.

Her small hands were shaking.

As he carried her away, she whispered against his neck.

"Daddy."

"I'm here."

"Aunt Vanessa said Mommy was a liar."

Adrian stopped walking.

His entire body went rigid.

"What?"

Lily lifted her face.

"She said Mommy was lying about what she found."

Adrian stared at her.

"What did your mother find?"

Lily opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, every security monitor in the resort suddenly went black.

One after another.

The screens died.

The security manager came sprinting down the corridor.

"Mr. Voss."

Adrian turned.

"What?"

The man's face had gone pale.

"The footage from the pool is gone."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"All of it?"

"Every camera facing the terrace."

Adrian looked down at Lily.

She was clutching his shirt.

Then he looked back toward the terrace.

Vanessa was still standing there.

So was Grant.

Neither looked surprised.

And Adrian realized something that frightened him more than what had just happened to his daughter.

Someone had known exactly which cameras to turn off.

And someone had known he would ask for the footage.

Twenty minutes later, Adrian stood alone inside the resort's private security office.

On the monitor was a single line of text:

ARCHIVE PURGED.

Then the screen refreshed.

A second message appeared.

COPY CREATED.

Adrian stared at it.

Whoever deleted the footage had not destroyed it.

May you like

They had copied it.

And someone, somewhere, still had the video.
