Chapter 7 - The CopyAdrian moved Lily to a secure location before sunrise.

Not one of his houses.
Not one of his company properties.
Somewhere nobody in his network knew.
He finally understood Elena's warning.
Protecting people through systems had made his family predictable.
His enemies knew every door he would use.
Every camera.
Every guard.
Every vehicle.
So Adrian abandoned all of them.
Marcus noticed.
"Elena would have liked that."
Adrian looked at him.
"You sound surprised."
"I am."
"Why?"
"Because she spent years begging you to stop turning the world into a fortress."
Adrian looked away.
He did not argue.
For the first time, he couldn't.
At noon, Adrian retrieved an old laptop Elena had hidden in a storage unit.
The machine contained no company software.
No corporate cloud access.
No modern security system.
Only one folder.
MIRROR
Inside were eight video files.
Adrian opened the first.
Elena stood in the Voss Meridian parking garage.
Grant approached her.
She handed him a folder.
"You're not protecting him," she said.
Grant looked nervous.
"He's my family."
"He stopped listening."
"You don't understand."
"I understand exactly."
Elena lowered her voice.
"If Adrian finds out what Daniel is doing, he'll burn the company down."
Grant nodded.
"That's why we need you."
Elena shook her head.
"No. You need me silent."
The video cut.
Another file.
Daniel entering a private office.
Vanessa following.
Then Grant.
Three people.
One table.
A folder.
Adrian paused.
On the table was his emergency authorization.
The one transferring disputed assets to Grant.
Daniel pointed at it.
"He'll sign whatever you put in front of him when he's angry enough."
Vanessa asked, "And Elena?"
Daniel looked at her.
"She'll make him question himself."
Grant frowned.
"Then what?"
Daniel smiled.
"She disappears."
Adrian stopped the video.
Marcus stood behind him.
"You saw this before?"
"No."
"Then who recorded it?"
"Elena."
Adrian replayed the final seconds.
A tiny reflection appeared in the glass behind Daniel.
Someone was standing there.
Someone else.
A fourth person.
Adrian enlarged the frame.
The figure's face was partially hidden.
He recognized the silhouette.
His body went cold.
It was him.
Adrian was standing outside the office.
Watching.
But the timestamp said something impossible.
The footage had been recorded after Elena had supposedly left for home.
Adrian stared.
"I wasn't there."
Marcus looked closer.
"You're sure?"
"Absolutely."
He paused.
Then remembered something.
His security double.
For years, Adrian had used a private security contractor trained to mimic his movements during high-risk travel.
A decoy.
A man nobody in the public knew existed.
The decoy's name was Victor Hale.
Adrian had dismissed the program after Elena died.
But Victor had never disappeared.
Adrian called his old security registry.
No record.
He tried a private contact.
Disconnected.
Marcus looked at him.
"The fourth man."
Adrian nodded.
"Find Victor Hale."
They traced him to a remote airstrip.
By the time they arrived, the hangar was empty.
Except for one thing.
A briefcase.
Inside were photographs.
Adrian.
Elena.
Lily.
Marcus.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
Grant.
Every photo had been taken secretly.
Some dated years before.
The last image was from the resort.
Lily stood beside the infinity pool.
On the back was a handwritten message.
Victor was never your decoy.
Adrian turned the photograph over.
Another line.
He was Elena's.
Adrian's heart pounded.
A final photograph was tucked underneath.
It showed Elena sitting inside a car.
She was looking directly at the camera.
And beside her in the driver's seat was Victor Hale.
The date was four days before her death.
Adrian whispered:
"She knew she was going to disappear."
Then Marcus found something else in the briefcase.
An envelope.
Adrian opened it.
Inside was a single sentence in Elena's handwriting.
If Adrian discovers Victor, tell him the truth he will hate most.
Marcus stared at Adrian.
"What truth?"
May you like
The back of the letter contained only one word.
LILY.
