Chapter 5 - The Night of the CrashThe photograph changed Adrian.

Until that moment, he had thought Elena's death was the center of the mystery.
Now he understood it was only one piece.
The car accident had happened on a mountain road forty miles outside the city.
Elena's sedan had gone through a guardrail.
Witnesses said the road was empty.
Police found no second vehicle.
But Marcus had kept a private copy of the original accident report.
"There was another car," Marcus said.
Adrian looked up.
"What?"
"Black SUV."
"Where?"
"Two hundred yards behind Elena."
"Why wasn't it in the report?"
"Because the witness disappeared."
Adrian's breathing slowed.
"Who was the witness?"
"Resort employee."
Adrian looked at him.
"The resort?"
Marcus nodded.
"She worked at Aurelia Grand."
Adrian's stomach tightened.
"What was her name?"
"Clara Bell."
They found Clara two days later working at a small restaurant near the coast.
She almost fled when Adrian walked inside.
He sat across from her.
"I won't hurt you."
She laughed without humor.
"That's what Elena said."
Adrian froze.
"What did my wife ask you?"
Clara looked around.
"She asked me whether I saw the SUV."
"Did you?"
"Yes."
"Who was driving?"
"I couldn't see."
"Did it follow her?"
"Yes."
"How long?"
"Nearly twenty minutes."
Adrian leaned forward.
"Why didn't you tell police?"
Clara looked at him.
"Because someone told me your company knew where my children went to school."
Silence.
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Who?"
"Your security department."
Marcus looked down.
Adrian turned toward him.
"You threatened her?"
"No."
"Then who did?"
Marcus answered quietly.
"Daniel."
Clara took a folded napkin from her bag.
Inside was a small memory card.
"Elena gave this to me."
Adrian accepted it.
"What is on it?"
"I don't know."
"Why didn't you give it to police?"
Clara looked afraid.
"Because Elena told me one thing."
"What?"
"She said if you ever came looking for it, I should ask whether you had changed."
Adrian's face went still.
"Changed into what?"
Clara shook her head.
"I don't know."
Back at the safe house, Adrian inserted the memory card.
A single audio file appeared.
Elena's voice.
Low.
Urgent.
"Adrian, if you're listening to this, you're searching for the wrong person."
Adrian leaned closer.
"You think the problem is Vanessa."
A pause.
"It isn't."
"You think Grant is behind this."
Another pause.
"He isn't alone."
Adrian looked toward Marcus.
The recording continued.
"The company isn't the target."
A metallic click sounded in the background.
Elena lowered her voice.
"Your daughter is."
Adrian's blood ran cold.
"Not because of her."
The recording crackled.
"Because of what she inherited."
Adrian stopped the file.
"What inheritance?"
Marcus looked stunned.
"I didn't know."
Adrian restarted the audio.
Elena continued.
"Lily has a legal claim that nobody can know about."
Adrian stared at the screen.
"What claim?"
Elena whispered:
"The controlling shares."
Then the recording stopped.
A new file appeared automatically.
It contained one scanned document.
A trust agreement.
Elena had transferred twenty-two percent of Voss Meridian into a trust.
The beneficiary was Lily.
The trustee was Marcus Reed.
And the document had one extraordinary clause.
The trust becomes irrevocable if Adrian Voss is determined to have acted against Elena's final instructions.
Adrian read the sentence again.
Then again.
His voice dropped.
"What did she think I would do?"
Marcus didn't answer.
Because a new line had appeared on the screen.
TRUST STATUS: ACTIVATED
Adrian stared at it.
Something had triggered the trust.
Something had happened recently.
Something worse than the attack at the resort.
His phone rang.
It was the hospital.
"Mr. Voss?"
"Yes."
"Your daughter has been exposed to a substance."
Adrian stood.
"What substance?"
"We don't know yet."
The nurse's voice trembled.
"But the child keeps repeating one sentence."
Adrian's heart stopped.
"What sentence?"
May you like
The nurse swallowed.
"She says, 'Mommy told me not to let Daddy find the red room.'"
