Chapter 14 - Ten MinutesRain began to fall.

The roof of Voss Meridian headquarters was nearly empty.

Daniel stood near the edge.

Lily was beside him.

She looked frightened but strangely calm.

Elena stepped forward.

"Let her go."

Daniel shook his head.

"It doesn't work like that."

Adrian walked slowly toward him.

"You wanted the company."

"No."

Daniel laughed.

"I wanted something much bigger."

Adrian looked at him.

"What?"

"Your trust."

Adrian said nothing.

Daniel pointed toward the city.

"Everybody thinks power comes from money."

"It doesn't."

"It comes from control."

Daniel smiled.

"You taught me that."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"I created the system."

"You created the philosophy."

Daniel pointed at Lily.

"And she inherited it."

Elena stepped forward.

"She's not your bargaining chip."

"No."

Daniel looked at her.

"She's Adrian's weakness."

He held out the detonator.

"Move one step closer and I destroy the archive."

Adrian stopped.

Daniel laughed.

"You think the archive matters?"

"It proves what you did."

"It proves what you can be blamed for."

Adrian understood.

Daniel wasn't trying to escape.

He was trying to leave Adrian holding the entire disaster.

Daniel had prepared another narrative.

If the archive survived, Adrian could be implicated.

If it was destroyed, Daniel could disappear.

Either way, Adrian would be blamed.

Daniel raised the detonator.

"Choose."

Adrian looked at Lily.

Then Elena.

Then the city.

He took out his phone.

Daniel frowned.

"What are you doing?"

"Calling the police."

Daniel's smile disappeared.

"You won't."

"I already did."

Adrian turned toward Lily.

"Lily, listen to me."

She nodded.

"Close your eyes."

She did.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Adrian."

Adrian looked at him.

"You spent years thinking fear made people obey."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"It does."

"It also makes them lie."

Daniel tightened his grip.

Behind him, Vanessa appeared.

She had followed them upstairs.

"Daniel."

He turned.

"What are you doing here?"

Vanessa raised both hands.

"You promised you'd let Grant and me go."

"I changed my mind."

"You said no one would get hurt."

Daniel laughed.

"People always get hurt."

Grant appeared behind Vanessa.

He was bleeding from the forehead.

Daniel stepped back.

His attention shifted.

That was enough.

Marcus moved.

He slammed Daniel's arm.

The detonator fell.

Adrian grabbed Lily.

Elena pulled her close.

Security officers rushed onto the roof.

Daniel was tackled.

The detonator slid across the wet concrete.

Nobody breathed.

Then Daniel laughed.

He looked at Adrian.

"You think this ends here?"

Adrian stared.

"What else?"

Daniel smiled.

"Ask Elena why the trust activated before Lily was attacked."

Adrian turned toward Elena.

She froze.

"What?"

Daniel laughed harder.

"Your wife activated it."

Adrian looked at Elena.

"Did you?"

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

"Before the resort?"

"Months ago."

"Why?"

Elena looked toward Lily.

"Because I knew someone would eventually force you to choose."

Adrian's face tightened.

"You used Lily's trust against me."

"No."

Elena shook her head.

"I used it to protect her from both sides."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Both sides?"

Elena looked directly at him.

"From Daniel."

Then:

"And from you."

Silence.

Elena touched Lily's hair.

"I knew you would come running when she was threatened."

"I would."

"I knew you would want to destroy everyone."

Adrian lowered his eyes.

"I almost did."

"I know."

Elena smiled sadly.

"That's why I left."

Adrian looked at her.

"What do you want from me?"

She answered quietly.

"Nothing."

Then she held out a final envelope.

"What is that?"

"My last letter."

Adrian opened it.

Only one sentence.

Do not leave Lily a company she has to survive. Leave her a life she can live.

Adrian looked at the skyline.

For the first time in his life, he understood what Elena had been trying to protect.

It wasn't the company.

It wasn't the money.

It wasn't even herself.

She had been trying to protect Lily from inheriting a world where love was measured by control.

Adrian closed the envelope.

May you like

Then he did something none of his employees had ever seen.

He stepped away from power.
