Chapter 13 - What Happened on the MountainThe blackout lasted eleven seconds.

When the monitors returned, Lily was gone.

Daniel was gone.

The warehouse was empty.

Only Adrian, Elena, Marcus, Vanessa, and Grant remained.

Adrian turned toward Grant.

"Where is my daughter?"

Grant shook his head.

"I don't know."

Adrian grabbed him.

"You're going to tell me."

Elena stepped between them.

"Adrian."

He stopped.

His hands trembled.

She looked into his eyes.

"Don't become what Daniel wants."

Adrian released Grant.

Marcus searched the warehouse.

Then he found something.

A hidden access panel.

Behind it was an old elevator.

"It goes underground."

Adrian entered.

The elevator descended.

Thirty seconds.

One minute.

Two.

The doors opened into an underground archive.

Hundreds of servers lined the walls.

Daniel had built a private copy of Voss Meridian's entire internal network.

Marcus looked around.

"This is everything."

Adrian spotted a file.

ELENA_2019_FINAL

He opened it.

A video.

Elena sat at a desk.

She looked exhausted.

"If you're watching this, then Daniel has probably already used Adrian's emergency system."

Adrian watched silently.

"He will try to make Adrian believe the crisis was entirely his fault."

Elena paused.

"That isn't true."

Adrian looked up.

Marcus said nothing.

Elena continued.

"Adrian built the system."

"Daniel weaponized it."

"They are not the same thing."

"But Adrian must take responsibility for creating something he refused to surrender."

The video continued.

"I do not want my husband destroyed."

Adrian looked stunned.

"I want him to understand."

Elena leaned toward the camera.

"Power does not become safe just because the person holding it loves you."

Adrian lowered his eyes.

Then Elena said something unexpected.

"If Adrian changes, this company can be saved."

"If he does not, Lily must inherit it without him."

A final file opened automatically.

A trust contract.

It included everything.

The offshore accounts.

The shell companies.

The falsified signatures.

Daniel's communications.

Grant's payments.

Vanessa's involvement.

And one shocking discovery.

The woman found dead in the original crash had not been Elena.

It had been a missing company auditor named Sarah Mercer.

Daniel had used the same car.

Same clothing.

Same medical bracelet.

He had staged Elena's death.

Adrian stared at the evidence.

"Why?"

Marcus answered.

"Because Elena knew too much."

The archive door slammed shut.

Daniel's voice came through the speakers.

"Not only that."

He appeared on a screen.

"She knew where the money went."

Adrian stepped toward the monitor.

"Where?"

Daniel smiled.

"Into a political influence fund."

Adrian frowned.

"For what?"

Daniel leaned forward.

"To buy silence."

He listed companies, officials, consultants, intermediaries.

Adrian understood the scale.

This was bigger than a family scandal.

Daniel had built a network around Voss Meridian's money.

But there was one name he hadn't mentioned.

Adrian's.

"Why involve me?"

Daniel smiled.

"Because your reputation made everything believable."

Adrian looked at Elena.

She nodded.

"He used your reputation as a shield."

Daniel continued.

"And when Elena discovered it, she threatened to expose everything."

"What stopped you?"

Daniel smiled.

"Your wife trusted the wrong person."

Adrian turned.

"Who?"

Daniel's smile widened.

"Marcus."

Adrian looked at Marcus.

Silence.

Marcus did not move.

Adrian's voice dropped.

"What did you do?"

Marcus finally spoke.

"I lied to Elena."

Elena looked at him.

"About what?"

Marcus closed his eyes.

"About Victor."

Adrian went still.

"What did Victor do?"

Marcus whispered:

"He never saved Elena."

He opened his eyes.

"I hired him."

Elena stared at him.

"For who?"

Marcus answered:

"For Adrian."

Adrian's world shifted.

He had spent four years believing Victor had protected Elena.

But the man he trusted most had sent Victor to find her.

And now Marcus admitted the truth.

"Adrian sent me to bring her home."

Elena stepped back.

"You told me you were helping me escape."

"I was trying to protect him."

Her voice broke.

"You were spying on me."

Marcus nodded.

"For months."

Adrian looked sick.

And then Lily's voice came from the speakers.

"Mommy?"

Everyone turned.

Elena whispered:

"Lily."

Daniel appeared again.

"Come to the roof."

He held up a detonator.

May you like

"You have ten minutes."

Then the screen went black.
