CHAPTER 9: THE FATHER'S FINAL BETRAYAL

The ballroom had become a battlefield.
The elegant celebration from hours ago was gone.
The music.
The laughter.
The fake smiles.
Everything had disappeared.
Now there was only chaos.
Security guards surrounded Jonathan Reed.
Guests were pushed away from the scene.
Phones were recording.
Rumors were already spreading.
The most powerful families in the city had just witnessed something that could destroy them all.
But Emily saw none of it.
Her entire world had narrowed down to one thing.
The envelope in her hands.
The envelope with her father's handwriting.
The words burned into her mind.
"Alexander Blackwood did not betray you first."
"I did."
For fifteen years, Emily believed her father was the one person who would never hurt her.
The one person who protected her.
The one person who loved her without conditions.
But now...
Even Richard Carter had secrets.
And somehow...
Those secrets were connected to everything.
Alexander.
Eleanor.
The Carter Trust.
Her entire life.
"Emily."
Alexander's voice came from behind her.
She didn't turn around.
Not this time.
Because she was tired of looking at his face every time another piece of her world broke.
"Don't."
Her voice was quiet.
But the warning was clear.
Alexander stopped.
Emily opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
No legal documents.
No complicated financial information.
Just a letter.
A letter written by her father.
She recognized his handwriting immediately.
Her fingers tightened.
Then she began reading.
My dearest Emily.
If you are reading this, then I failed.
Emily's breathing changed.
Her father continued.
I failed to protect you from the truth.
I failed because I thought hiding the darkness would keep you safe.
A father always wants to believe he can build a wall between his child and the world.
But walls do not protect people forever.
Sometimes they only keep people trapped.
Emily's eyes moved across the page.
Then came the sentence that made her freeze.
You have spent your entire life believing that I was protecting you from enemies.
I was not.
I was protecting my enemies from you.
Emily stopped.
"What?"
The people around her watched.
Even Alexander looked confused.
She continued.
Emily, you are not the weak link everyone believes you are.
You are the reason I survived.
You are the reason the Carter family survived.
A strange feeling appeared in her chest.
Pride.
Fear.
Confusion.
Her father continued.
When your mother died, I realized something.
This world does not reward kindness.
It rewards those who understand power.
Emily looked up.
Her mother.
A woman she barely remembered.
Another mystery.
Another missing piece.
She continued reading.
I spent years building an empire.
But I made one mistake.
I believed money could protect the people I loved.
I was wrong.
The letter shook slightly in her hand.
Money attracts predators.
Power attracts monsters.
And I created both.
Emily looked at Alexander.
The words felt like they were describing him.
But then the next line changed everything.
Alexander Blackwell was not the monster I feared.
Her eyes widened.
She read faster.
He was a victim of one.
The entire room seemed to disappear.
Alexander looked shocked.
Because even he had not expected those words.
I saw what Eleanor did to him.
I saw how she shaped him.
I saw how she turned a child into a weapon.
Emily slowly lowered the paper.
So her father knew.
He knew everything.
He knew Alexander was being controlled.
He knew what Eleanor was doing.
Then why?
Why didn't he tell her?
The letter answered.
Because Alexander was not the greatest danger.
Emily continued.
The greatest danger was the person who could make everyone believe they were innocent.
A chill moved through her.
Who?
She kept reading.
The person who destroyed the Carter family was not outside our walls.
It was someone we trusted.
Emily's heart began racing.
The room was silent.
Everyone wanted the answer.
Then she saw the next sentence.
And everything stopped.
The person who betrayed me was someone you call family.
Emily looked up.
Slowly.
Her eyes moved across the room.
Who?
Who was it?
Jonathan was injured.
Alexander was silent.
Victor looked tense.
Victoria looked terrified.
Then Emily noticed something.
A small detail.
Something she had ignored.
Something that suddenly became impossible to ignore.
The person who attacked Jonathan...
Had access to the ballroom.
Had access to the security system.
Had access to information nobody should have.
Someone inside.
Someone close.
She looked back at the letter.
The next words destroyed her.
Emily, do not trust Victor Blackwell.
The room went silent.
Victor's expression changed.
Emily stared at him.
"What?"
Victor looked genuinely surprised.
"Emily..."
She stepped away.
Her father's handwriting continued.
He will tell you he protected me.
He will tell you he protected you.
But Victor Blackwell was the first person who taught Alexander how to lie.
Victor's face became cold.
"Richard was wrong."
Emily looked at him.
"Was he?"
For the first time...
Victor had no immediate answer.
Alexander watched him carefully.
Then Emily noticed something.
Alexander was not defending Victor.
Why?
Because he knew something.
"You knew."
Emily turned toward Alexander.
His silence confirmed it.
"You knew my father didn't trust Victor."
Alexander lowered his eyes.
"Yes."
"And you never told me."
"No."
The anger returned.
"Why?"
Alexander looked at her.
"Because I didn't know who to trust."
Emily laughed softly.
A painful laugh.
"Funny."
Everyone looked at her.
"Because that's exactly what my life has become."
She looked at the people around her.
"Everyone has a secret."
"Everyone has an excuse."
"Everyone says they were protecting me."
Her voice became colder.
"But somehow..."
"Everyone still managed to hurt me."
Suddenly, Jonathan moved.
Barely.
But enough.
Everyone turned.
A doctor rushed forward.
Jonathan grabbed Emily's wrist.
His voice was weak.
"Emily..."
She leaned closer.
"What?"
Jonathan struggled.
"Your father..."
He coughed.
"Your father didn't write that letter alone."
Emily froze.
"What do you mean?"
Jonathan looked terrified.
"He had help."
"From who?"
Jonathan's eyes moved toward Alexander.
Then toward Victor.
Then toward the entrance.
His final words were barely audible.
"The person who wrote the second half..."
"...is the person who killed him."
Jonathan lost consciousness.
The room erupted.
Emily looked down at the letter.
Her blood turned cold.
Because she noticed something she hadn't seen before.
The handwriting changed.
The first half...
Was her father's.
The second half...
Was someone else's.
And at the bottom of the page...
There was a signature.
A name.
A name that made Alexander step backward.
Because he recognized it.
Emily whispered:
"No..."
May you like
The signature belonged to:
Eleanor Blackwell.
