CHAPTER 7: THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN TWO ENEMIES

The ballroom had never felt so small.
Minutes earlier, it had been filled with hundreds of the most powerful people in the city.
Now...
Everyone looked powerless.
Because they had witnessed something impossible.
Eleanor Blackwell was alive.
The woman who had disappeared fifteen years ago.
The woman whose name was connected to some of the most mysterious financial events of the decade.
The woman who had just announced that the Carter and Blackwell families had been connected all along.
Emily stood beneath the massive screen.
The image of the document remained frozen in her mind.
Her father's signature.
Eleanor's signature.
A date from fifteen years ago.
The same year everything changed.
The same year Richard Carter died.
The same year Alexander entered her life.
Too many coincidences.
Too many secrets.
"Turn it off."
Alexander's voice broke the silence.
Nobody moved.
Emily looked at him.
For the first time, she didn't see the arrogant billionaire.
She saw a man trapped between two worlds.
The son of a woman who created him.
And the husband of the woman he was supposed to destroy.
Jonathan Reed stepped forward.
"Alexander."
His voice was filled with disappointment.
"You knew."
Alexander looked at him.
"I knew my mother existed."
"Not this."
Jonathan laughed bitterly.
"You expect us to believe that?"
Alexander's expression darkened.
"Because it's the truth."
Emily watched him carefully.
She wanted to hate him.
It would have been easier.
She wanted him to be nothing more than a villain.
A monster.
Someone she could destroy without hesitation.
But every time she looked at him...
She saw contradictions.
The lies.
The betrayal.
The pain.
And something worse.
Regret.
"Then explain."
Emily said.
Everyone turned toward her.
Alexander looked at her.
"Emily..."
"No."
Her voice was calm.
"But this time, you don't get to decide what I know."
She walked closer.
"You spent years making choices for me."
"You decided what truths I deserved."
"You decided what secrets I could handle."
She looked directly into his eyes.
"Now I decide."
Alexander remained silent.
And that silence was his permission.
"Start talking."
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he finally spoke.
"When I met you..."
Emily felt her chest tighten.
"That wasn't a coincidence."
The words still hurt.
Even though she already knew.
"I was looking for information about your father."
Alexander continued.
"Richard Carter had hidden something."
"The Carter Trust."
"The investments."
"The accounts nobody could find."
Emily's face remained expressionless.
"Go on."
Alexander swallowed.
"My mother believed your father left behind a weakness."
"What weakness?"
"You."
The room went quiet.
Alexander looked ashamed.
"She thought you were the key."
Emily felt a cold anger rise inside her.
"Because I was his daughter."
"Yes."
"Because you thought I would give you access."
"Yes."
The honesty was painful.
But somehow...
It was better than another lie.
"Then why didn't you?"
Alexander looked down.
And for the first time...
He looked broken.
"Because I couldn't."
Emily frowned.
"Couldn't?"
"I tried."
A pause.
"I searched your father's files."
"I investigated the Carter Trust."
"I watched you."
The admission made her heart ache.
"I learned your habits."
"Your weaknesses."
"Your fears."
Emily looked away.
Every word was another piece of betrayal.
"But then..."
Alexander stopped.
"Then what?"
He looked at her.
"I realized I was no longer studying you."
"I was falling for you."
The room was silent.
Emily hated that those words affected her.
Because some part of her remembered.
The early days.
Before the money.
Before the empire.
Before the lies.
The nights they stayed awake talking.
The moments when Alexander looked at her like she was the only person in the world.
But then she remembered tonight.
The ballroom.
The humiliation.
His silence.
"You loved me."
Emily said.
"But you still chose to destroy me."
Alexander closed his eyes.
"Yes."
The honesty shocked everyone.
Emily stared at him.
"Why?"
"Because I thought I could control everything."
He looked toward the screen where Eleanor had appeared.
"I thought I could take what my mother wanted and still protect you."
A bitter smile appeared.
"I was wrong."
Before Emily could respond...
Jonathan interrupted.
"That's not the whole story."
Everyone turned.
Jonathan looked at Emily.
"Your father knew."
Emily froze.
"Knew what?"
"That Alexander had entered your life."
The words hit harder than expected.
"My father knew?"
Jonathan nodded.
"Richard knew almost immediately."
Emily looked confused.
"Then why didn't he stop him?"
Jonathan took a breath.
"Because Richard saw something nobody else saw."
"What?"
"That Alexander was not the only prisoner."
The answer surprised her.
Jonathan continued.
"Your father discovered the truth about Eleanor."
"She wasn't just trying to steal the Carter fortune."
"She was trying to control every major financial family in the country."
Emily looked at the screen.
"Eleanor wanted an empire."
"Yes."
"But she needed something."
Jonathan nodded.
"The Carter Trust."
Emily understood.
"Because my father had something she didn't."
"Exactly."
"What?"
Jonathan looked at her.
"Trust."
A strange answer.
Emily frowned.
"Trust?"
"Your father built his empire differently."
"He didn't control people through fear."
"He built alliances."
"People followed him because they believed in him."
Jonathan continued.
"Eleanor could buy loyalty."
"But she couldn't create it."
The room became quiet.
"And that's why she needed Richard."
Emily looked at the document.
The agreement.
Her father's signature.
"Then why did they work together?"
Jonathan looked at the paper.
"Because fifteen years ago..."
"Richard and Eleanor made a deal."
Emily's eyes narrowed.
"What kind of deal?"
Jonathan hesitated.
And that hesitation told her it was something dangerous.
"A deal to create the most powerful financial alliance in history."
Everyone listened.
"But Richard discovered something."
"What?"
Jonathan's voice lowered.
"That Eleanor never planned to share power."
"She planned to take everything."
Emily looked at Alexander.
"And Alexander was part of the plan."
Jonathan nodded.
"He was the weapon."
The word echoed.
Weapon.
Not son.
Not businessman.
Weapon.
Emily looked at Alexander.
And for a moment...
She saw a young man who had spent his entire life being shaped by someone else.
But then she remembered.
Weapons still hurt people.
And Alexander had hurt her.
Suddenly, Emily's phone vibrated.
A new message.
Unknown number.
She opened it.
Her face changed.
Because the message contained a photo.
A photo of her father.
Taken the day before his death.
But that wasn't what shocked her.
It was the person standing beside him.
Alexander.
Young.
Standing next to Richard Carter.
And beneath the image was one sentence.
"Ask your husband what really happened the night your father died."
Emily slowly looked up.
Her eyes locked onto Alexander.
The entire room disappeared.
"Alexander."
Her voice was different now.
Cold.
"What happened the night my father died?"
Alexander went completely still.
For several seconds...
He said nothing.
Then he whispered:
"You were never supposed to find out."
Emily's heart sank.
"Find out what?"
Alexander looked at her.
And the fear in his eyes confirmed one thing.
The biggest betrayal had not happened tonight.
It happened fifteen years ago.
May you like
The night Richard Carter died.
And Alexander Blackwood was there.
