CHAPTER 8: THE NIGHT RICHARD CARTER DIED

The photograph remained on Emily's phone.

A single image.

A single moment.

Yet it felt heavier than every secret she had uncovered that night.

Her father.

Richard Carter.

Standing outside an old private estate.

And beside him...

A young Alexander Blackwood.

Fifteen years younger.

Before the billion-dollar empire.

Before the fame.

Before the cold smile.

Before he became the man everyone feared.

Emily stared at the picture.

Her hands were completely still.

But inside...

Everything was collapsing.

"Explain."

Her voice cut through the ballroom.

Nobody moved.

Alexander looked at the photo.

And for the first time...

Emily saw genuine fear in his eyes.

Not fear of losing money.

Not fear of losing power.

Fear of the past.

"Emily..."

"Don't."

She raised her hand.

The gesture stopped him instantly.

"I spent tonight watching you lie to me."

Her voice trembled slightly.

"I watched you stand there while everyone humiliated me."

"I watched you prepare to erase me from your life."

She looked at the photograph again.

"But this?"

She held up the phone.

"This happened before I ever met you."

Alexander lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

A quiet answer.

But it confirmed everything.

Emily felt a sharp pain in her chest.

"What were you doing with my father?"

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

And that hesitation was the final betrayal.

"Answer me."

She said.

"I was there because of my mother."

The name alone changed the atmosphere.

Eleanor.

The woman who had been controlling everything from the shadows.

Emily stepped closer.

"What did Eleanor want?"

Alexander looked around.

Hundreds of eyes were watching.

People who had spent years believing he was untouchable.

Now they were seeing something different.

A man carrying a secret.

"My mother believed Richard Carter had hidden something."

Alexander said.

"The Omega Clause."

Emily narrowed her eyes.

"But the Omega Clause didn't exist publicly."

"No."

"Then how did she know?"

Alexander looked at her.

"Because she helped create it."

The room went silent.

Emily felt the pieces moving.

"You're saying my father and Eleanor worked together?"

"Yes."

"But they became enemies."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Alexander looked at the floor.

"Because your father discovered what she really wanted."

"What?"

"Complete control."

Emily listened.

Alexander continued.

"Richard wanted to build something that protected families."

"My mother wanted to build something that controlled them."

"Those two ideas could never exist together."

Emily looked at the photograph.

"And that night?"

Alexander took a breath.

"That night was the last meeting between them."

"What happened?"

His expression became distant.

Like he was returning to a memory he had spent years trying to bury.

Fifteen years earlier.

Alexander Blackwell was twenty-three years old.

Young.

Ambitious.

Angry.

He had spent his entire life trying to prove himself to Eleanor.

To the world.

To himself.

His mother didn't raise him with love.

She raised him with expectations.

Failure was unacceptable.

Weakness was forbidden.

And emotions...

Were considered a disease.

That night, Eleanor gave him one order.

"Go to Richard Carter."

Alexander remembered her voice.

Cold.

Precise.

"Get the location of the Carter Trust."

He had asked:

"What if he refuses?"

Eleanor smiled.

"Then make him understand the consequences."

At the time, Alexander didn't question her.

He wanted approval.

He wanted to finally become someone she respected.

So he went.

He found Richard Carter at the private estate.

But something unexpected happened.

Richard wasn't angry.

He wasn't afraid.

He simply looked at Alexander and said:

"You're not here because you want my fortune."

Alexander remembered being confused.

Richard continued:

"You're here because you want your mother's approval."

Those words had shaken him.

Because they were true.

"You know who I am?"

Alexander asked.

Richard smiled.

"I know exactly who you are."

The old man walked toward him.

"You're a weapon someone else created."

Alexander hated those words.

Because they were true.

"I came here for answers."

Richard looked at him.

"No."

"You came here because you were told to."

That night...

Something changed.

Because Richard Carter did something Eleanor never did.

He treated Alexander like a person.

Not an asset.

Not a tool.

Not a weapon.

A person.

Back in the ballroom...

Emily watched Alexander carefully.

"And then?"

Alexander looked at her.

"Then your father gave me a choice."

"What choice?"

"To continue being my mother's weapon."

A pause.

"Or become my own person."

Emily's expression softened for half a second.

Then hardened again.

"Did you choose?"

Alexander looked away.

"I thought I did."

"What does that mean?"

"It means..."

His voice became quieter.

"Before I left that night, my mother called me."

Everyone waited.

Alexander continued.

"She knew."

"Knew what?"

"She knew Richard had changed my mind."

Emily felt a chill.

"What happened?"

Alexander's eyes darkened.

"My mother told me that if I didn't get the information she wanted..."

"She would destroy Richard Carter."

Emily froze.

"How?"

Alexander didn't answer.

Because the answer was obvious.

Everyone understood.

Emily's voice became barely audible.

"Did she kill him?"

The question hung in the air.

Alexander closed his eyes.

"I don't know."

The answer shocked everyone.

"You don't know?"

Alexander looked at her.

"I left."

"That night?"

"Yes."

"Before my father died?"

"Yes."

Emily stepped back.

"So you were there."

"Yes."

"You knew he was in danger."

"Yes."

"And you left."

Alexander couldn't defend himself.

Because there was no defense.

Emily felt tears forming.

Not because she still loved him.

Because she was grieving.

For her father.

For the truth.

For the life she thought she had.

"You let him die."

Alexander whispered:

"Yes."

The word destroyed the last piece of hope.

Before Emily could respond...

A loud sound came from outside.

Glass breaking.

People screamed.

Security rushed toward the entrance.

Then every light in the ballroom shut down again.

But this time...

There was no voice from the speakers.

No video.

No warning.

Only darkness.

Then...

A gunshot.

Everyone froze.

When the lights returned...

Jonathan Reed was lying on the floor.

Blood spreading across his shirt.

Emily screamed.

"Jonathan!"

Security rushed forward.

Alexander immediately moved toward Emily.

But she stepped away.

Because something else had caught her attention.

On the marble floor beside Jonathan...

Was a small envelope.

With her father's handwriting.

FOR EMILY.

The entire room watched as she picked it up.

Her hands shaking.

Because she knew.

Whatever was inside...

Was the final truth.

The truth her father died protecting.

And as Emily opened the envelope...

A single sentence appeared.

One sentence that changed everything.

May you like

"Alexander Blackwood did not betray you first."

"I did."
