CHAPTER 3: THE MAN BEHIND ALEXANDER'S EMPIRE

The Royal Astoria ballroom had witnessed countless victories.

Business deals worth billions.

Political alliances.

Corporate takeovers.

The rise and fall of powerful families.

But nobody had ever seen anything like this.

The woman everyone expected to break...

Had just become the most dangerous person in the room.

Emily Carter stood beneath the golden lights, holding the document that had changed everything.

Only an hour ago, she had entered this ballroom as a wife who was about to be publicly discarded.

Now...

She stood as the woman who could decide the future of an empire.

Alexander Blackwood stared at her.

The confidence that had defined him for years was gone.

Not completely.

Alexander was too proud to show panic.

But Emily noticed the small details.

The way his fingers tightened.

The way his eyes moved toward the lawyers.

The way his perfect expression cracked for half a second.

He was afraid.

And for the first time in years...

Emily realized something.

Alexander Blackwood was not a god.

He was just a man.

A man who had built his throne on borrowed power.

"You're bluffing."

Alexander finally spoke.

His voice was calm again.

Controlled.

The same voice he used when destroying competitors in boardrooms.

But Emily knew him too well.

She knew the difference between confidence and desperation.

"You want everyone here to believe you suddenly have control over everything?"

He laughed softly.

"Emily, this is exactly why you never belonged in my world."

A few guests looked uncomfortable.

Alexander continued.

"You found one old document and now you think you understand business?"

Emily listened quietly.

She didn't interrupt.

That made Alexander even more irritated.

Because the old Emily would have defended herself.

The old Emily would have tried to explain.

The old Emily would have wanted him to understand her.

But that woman was gone.

"Do you know why I married you?"

The question surprised everyone.

Emily looked at him.

Alexander smiled.

"Because I thought you were different."

A lie.

A beautiful lie.

"I thought you weren't like the other people chasing money."

He stepped closer.

"But I was wrong."

Emily's eyes narrowed.

"What are you trying to say?"

Alexander lowered his voice.

"I'm saying you became exactly what your father feared."

The room went silent.

Emily froze.

"My father?"

Alexander looked around.

Then back at her.

"You think you know everything about Richard Carter?"

"About the man who left you this fortune?"

"About the father who disappeared before his death?"

His smile returned.

"Maybe you should ask yourself why he never trusted you with the truth."

For the first time that night...

Emily felt something shift.

Because there was one thing Alexander knew how to do better than anyone.

He knew where to place a knife.

And exactly how deep to push it.

"You don't know anything about my father."

Emily said it firmly.

But Alexander saw the hesitation.

And he used it.

"Really?"

He walked toward the center of the room.

"Then why don't we talk about the Carter family's biggest secret?"

Several guests exchanged looks.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone loved a scandal.

Especially one involving billionaires.

Alexander raised his glass.

"Fifteen years ago, Richard Carter didn't just hide his assets."

"He hid a failure."

Emily's expression changed.

"What failure?"

Alexander smiled.

"There it is."

"The question you never asked."

The room became colder.

"Your father wasn't protecting the Carter fortune."

"He was protecting himself."

Emily felt her heartbeat increase.

She hated that a small part of her wondered if he was telling the truth.

Because her father's death had always been surrounded by unanswered questions.

Richard Carter had been brilliant.

Powerful.

Respected.

Then suddenly...

Everything changed.

He became distant.

Secretive.

And months later, he was gone.

"Stop."

Emily said.

But Alexander continued.

"Your father trusted nobody."

"Not investors."

"Not partners."

"Not even his own family."

A whisper moved through the crowd.

Emily stared at him.

"Why are you telling me this?"

Alexander smiled.

"Because I want you to understand something."

He pointed at the document in her hand.

"You think that paper gives you power."

"But you don't even know what you're controlling."

Emily remained silent.

And that silence bothered Alexander.

Because he expected anger.

Instead, she looked thoughtful.

Like she was putting pieces together.

Then suddenly...

A voice came from behind them.

"He's right about one thing."

Everyone turned.

An elderly man stood near the entrance of the ballroom.

Wearing a dark suit.

Holding a silver cane.

The entire room changed when people saw him.

Because almost everyone recognized him.

Jonathan Reed.

The former chairman of Carter Global.

And the man who had worked beside Richard Carter for more than thirty years.

A living legend.

A man who had disappeared from public life after Richard's death.

Alexander's face changed.

Because he knew exactly who this man was.

"Mr. Reed."

Jonathan ignored him.

His eyes went directly to Emily.

"I'm sorry."

The words shocked her.

"Sorry for what?"

Jonathan slowly walked forward.

"For allowing you to believe a lie for so long."

Emily stared.

"What lie?"

Jonathan looked at Alexander.

Then back at her.

"The truth about your father."

The entire ballroom held its breath.

Jonathan continued.

"Richard Carter did not hide his fortune because he didn't trust you."

"He hid it because he was afraid someone would use you to get it."

Emily looked at Alexander.

And slowly...

Everything became clear.

Jonathan turned toward the crowd.

"Your father knew there were people close to him who wanted control."

"He knew one day someone would try to marry into the Carter family."

Alexander's expression darkened.

"Enough."

Jonathan ignored him.

"He created the trust."

"He created the conditions."

"He created the protection."

Then he looked directly at Emily.

"But he also created one final message."

Emily's voice was quiet.

"What message?"

Jonathan reached into his jacket.

He removed a small envelope.

Older than the first document.

The Carter family seal was on it.

Emily stared.

"Your father left this for you."

Alexander suddenly stepped forward.

"No."

Everyone noticed.

That one word.

That one reaction.

Because Alexander didn't look angry anymore.

He looked terrified.

Emily turned toward him.

"You know about this?"

Alexander said nothing.

Jonathan handed the envelope to Emily.

"Your father told me that if the day came when your husband betrayed you..."

A pause.

"...I was to give you this."

Emily slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

Only a few sentences.

But the moment she read them...

Her entire world changed.

Her father's handwriting stared back at her.

Emily.

If you are reading this, then the person you trusted most has already shown his true face.

Her hands trembled.

The next sentence made her blood run cold.

Do not fight for the marriage.

Do not fight for the company.

Fight for the truth.

Below those words was a name.

A name Emily had never expected to see.

A name that connected her father's death...

Alexander's rise...

And the betrayal of tonight.

Emily slowly looked up.

Her face had lost all emotion.

Because she finally understood.

Alexander Blackwood had not entered her life by accident.

He had been sent.

But the question was...

By whom?

And why?

Jonathan whispered:

"Emily..."

"You need to know something."

"Your husband is not the mastermind."

The room went silent.

Emily looked at Alexander.

Then back at Jonathan.

"Then who is?"

Jonathan's answer froze everyone.

"The person who created Alexander Blackwood."

And at that moment...

Emily realized the divorce, the humiliation, and the betrayal were not the real war.

They were only the opening move.

May you like

Because the enemy she was about to face...

Was someone who had been watching her entire life.
