CHAPTER 5: THE LAST MESSAGE FROM RICHARD CARTER

The words remained hanging in the air.

"The power to destroy everyone who ever betrayed you."

Nobody in the ballroom spoke.

Not the billionaires.

Not the executives.

Not even the people who had spent the entire evening enjoying Emily's humiliation.

Because the woman they thought they were watching fall...

Was no longer falling.

She was rising.

And everyone in that room could feel it.

Emily stared at Victor Blackwell.

The man who claimed to have known her father.

The man who claimed Alexander had entered her life with a hidden mission.

The man who had just revealed that her entire marriage might have been built on a lie.

But there was one question louder than everything else.

"Why should I believe you?"

Emily asked.

Victor did not look offended.

Instead, he nodded.

A small reaction.

Almost as if he expected that answer.

"Good."

Emily frowned.

"Good?"

"Yes."

Victor looked around the room.

"That is the first thing Richard Carter would have wanted."

"What?"

"He wanted you to question everyone."

His eyes returned to her.

"Especially the people who claim they are protecting you."

The sentence caught Emily off guard.

Because it sounded exactly like something her father would say.

Richard Carter had always been careful.

Almost too careful.

When she was young, she remembered him telling her:

"Emily, trust is not something people deserve because they ask for it."

At the time, she thought he was simply being cautious.

Now...

She wondered if he was preparing her.

Preparing her for this exact moment.

"Where is the proof?"

Emily asked.

Victor reached into his jacket.

But before he could remove anything...

Alexander spoke.

"Stop."

Everyone looked at him.

His voice was different.

Not commanding.

Not arrogant.

Almost desperate.

"Victor, don't."

The reaction was immediate.

Emily noticed.

So did everyone else.

Because Alexander Blackwood, the man who never showed weakness...

Was afraid.

Afraid of what Victor was about to reveal.

Emily turned toward him.

"What are you afraid I will see?"

Alexander remained silent.

That silence hurt more than any confession.

Because somewhere deep inside...

A small part of Emily had still hoped there was an explanation.

A misunderstanding.

A reason.

Anything.

But the man she loved was standing there, unable to deny it.

Victor finally removed a small device from his pocket.

An old voice recorder.

The kind people used before everything became digital.

Emily stared at it.

"What is that?"

"Your father's final recording."

Her heart stopped.

"My father?"

Victor nodded.

"Richard recorded this three days before his death."

The entire room became still.

Emily looked at the device.

Fifteen years.

Fifteen years wondering what her father wanted to say.

Fifteen years wondering why he left so many unanswered questions.

And now...

His voice was waiting.

Victor pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then...

A familiar voice appeared.

A voice Emily had not heard in years.

"Emily."

Her entire body froze.

Because even after all this time...

She recognized him instantly.

Her father's voice.

Older.

Tired.

But still strong.

"If you are hearing this, then something happened."

A pause.

"And I am sorry."

Emily's eyes immediately filled.

Not with weakness.

With memories.

The father who used to carry her when she was young.

The father who taught her how to read financial reports before she even understood why numbers mattered.

The father who always told her:

"Never let anyone convince you that kindness means weakness."

The recording continued.

"I know you will be angry."

"You will wonder why I kept secrets."

"But everything I did was to protect you."

Emily closed her eyes.

The room disappeared.

Only her father's voice remained.

"There are people who will come into your life pretending to love you."

"Some will want your money."

"Some will want your name."

"Some will want your power."

A pause.

"But the most dangerous person is the one who believes they can love you while still using you."

Emily slowly opened her eyes.

Her gaze moved toward Alexander.

He looked away.

The recording continued.

"Alexander Blackwell."

The name echoed.

Alexander's face changed.

Emily noticed.

"Yes."

Her father's voice continued.

"I know about him."

"I know who sent him."

"I know why he came."

Emily felt her heartbeat accelerate.

Then came the sentence she never expected.

"But I also know something nobody else knows."

A pause.

"Alexander was supposed to destroy the Carter family."

"He was supposed to take everything."

"But he failed."

Emily looked at Alexander.

Why?

Her father's answer came.

"Because somewhere along the way..."

"He stopped pretending."

"He actually fell in love with my daughter."

The room went silent.

Emily felt something break inside her.

Even after everything...

Even after the betrayal.

Those words hurt.

Because they created a terrifying possibility.

Maybe not everything was fake.

Maybe some moments were real.

The recording continued.

"But love does not erase betrayal."

"Remember that, Emily."

"Someone can love you..."

"And still destroy you."

Those words hit harder than anything else.

Because they described Alexander perfectly.

The recording continued.

"I created a final protection."

"Not for my fortune."

"Not for my company."

"For you."

Victor looked at Emily.

"This is what I wanted you to hear."

The recording continued.

"If Alexander ever chooses power over you..."

"If he ever uses your trust against you..."

"Then the Carter Trust will activate the Omega Clause."

Several older businessmen in the room reacted.

One whispered:

"The Omega Clause?"

Another looked terrified.

Emily noticed.

"What is that?"

Nobody answered.

Until Jonathan Reed spoke.

"The Omega Clause was your father's final weapon."

Emily turned.

"Against who?"

Jonathan looked at Alexander.

"Against anyone who tried to steal the Carter legacy."

Victor continued.

"And unfortunately..."

He looked at Alexander.

"Your husband triggered it tonight."

Emily looked down at the document in her hand.

The divorce papers.

The public humiliation.

The attempt to remove her.

Everything.

It wasn't just cruel.

It was a trigger.

A trap.

Alexander suddenly stepped forward.

"Emily, listen to me."

For the first time that night...

His voice sounded human.

Not like a billionaire.

Not like a businessman.

Like the man she once loved.

"I can explain."

Emily looked at him.

A thousand emotions crossed her face.

Pain.

Anger.

Confusion.

But then...

Something changed.

Because she remembered something.

The way he smiled when Victoria insulted her.

The way he stood there while she was humiliated.

The way he chose silence.

"Explain what?"

Her voice was quiet.

"Which part?"

Alexander stopped.

Emily continued.

"That you were sent to destroy my family?"

"No."

"That you lied to me for years?"

"Emily..."

"Or that you only regretted it because you got caught?"

The words destroyed him.

Because he had no answer.

Then suddenly...

Every phone in the ballroom rang.

At the same time.

Hundreds of screens lit up.

People looked down.

Confused.

Then shocked.

A financial alert.

Breaking news.

The headline appeared.

And within seconds...

The entire room changed.

BLACKWOOD INTERNATIONAL STOCKS PLUMMET AFTER UNKNOWN INVESTIGATION BEGINS.

Alexander's face went pale.

"No."

Another notification appeared.

Then another.

CARTER TRUST LEGAL ACTION INITIATED.

Emily stared at the screens.

She had not done anything.

Not yet.

Which meant...

Someone else had started the attack.

Victor looked at her.

And for the first time, he looked worried.

"That wasn't me."

Emily turned.

"What?"

Victor's expression became serious.

"That wasn't your father's plan."

"Then who did it?"

Nobody answered.

Until a message appeared on Emily's phone.

A number she didn't recognize.

One sentence.

Only one.

"You thought Alexander was your enemy?"

Another message appeared.

"You have no idea who you married into."

Emily looked at Victor.

Then Alexander.

Then the message.

And she finally understood.

Her revenge was not going to be a battle between her and Alexander.

Because Alexander Blackwood...

May you like

Was only a piece on the board.

The real player had just entered the game.
