CHAPTER 11: THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

The image on the tablet remained frozen.
A man walking through the entrance of the Royal Astoria Hotel.
A man with silver hair.
A familiar posture.
A familiar face.
A face Emily had spent fifteen years mourning.
Her father.
Richard Carter.
Alive.
The room was no longer shocked.
It was beyond shock.
Shock required the brain to believe what it was seeing.
But nobody could.
A dead man had just walked back into the story.
Alexander stared at the screen.
His expression was impossible to read.
Fear.
Confusion.
Anger.
All of it mixed together.
Victor looked like he had seen a ghost.
Because he had.
"Impossible."
Jonathan whispered.
His voice was weak.
"Richard is dead."
Emily slowly turned toward him.
"Is he?"
Jonathan looked at her.
And for the first time...
The old man's confidence disappeared.
Because he knew.
He knew something.
Everyone in that room knew something except her.
And that was the part that hurt the most.
Fifteen years.
Fifteen years of being treated like a child who couldn't handle the truth.
Fifteen years of people making decisions about her life.
Her father.
Her husband.
Everyone.
Emily looked at the people around her.
"How many more secrets are there?"
Nobody answered.
Her voice became louder.
"How many?"
The silence was unbearable.
Then Alexander finally spoke.
"Emily."
She looked at him.
"Don't."
He stopped.
Because he understood.
She wasn't ready to hear another excuse.
Not another explanation.
Not another person claiming they lied because they cared.
"I want the truth."
Emily said.
"Not protection."
"Not excuses."
"Not another person deciding what I deserve to know."
She looked directly at Alexander.
"I want the truth."
Alexander lowered his eyes.
Then he nodded.
"You're right."
The answer surprised her.
For once...
He wasn't fighting.
"I should have told you years ago."
Emily froze.
Years ago?
"What does that mean?"
Alexander looked at the screen.
Then at Victor.
Then back at her.
"It means..."
He took a breath.
"Your father never died the way everyone believed."
The room became silent again.
Emily felt her heartbeat in her ears.
"What happened?"
Alexander closed his eyes.
"Fifteen years ago, Richard Carter discovered someone was trying to destroy both families."
"The Carter family."
"The Blackwell family."
"Everyone."
Emily looked confused.
"Who?"
Alexander shook his head.
"I don't know."
"Then why did my father disappear?"
"Because he realized the only way to survive..."
"Was to become dead."
Emily stared at him.
"You expect me to believe my father faked his own death?"
Alexander looked at her.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because someone was trying to kill him."
A bitter laugh escaped Emily.
"Someone?"
She looked around.
"Everyone keeps saying someone."
"Who?"
"Who wanted him dead?"
Nobody answered.
And that made her angry.
"All of you knew."
Her voice cracked.
"All of you knew my father might be alive."
Jonathan looked away.
Victor looked away.
Alexander looked away.
Emily felt betrayed all over again.
"Even you?"
She looked at Alexander.
"You knew?"
Alexander's silence answered.
The pain on her face was worse than anger.
"You knew."
Alexander whispered:
"I knew he might have survived."
"Might?"
"Yes."
"How?"
Alexander hesitated.
Then:
"Because I saw him."
The entire room froze.
Emily stared.
"When?"
"The night he disappeared."
Her breath caught.
"Tell me."
Alexander looked like he hated himself.
"I followed my mother."
"She was meeting someone."
"I thought it was Richard."
"And it was."
Emily stepped closer.
"You saw my father?"
"Yes."
"Alive?"
"Yes."
The room became completely silent.
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
Alexander's eyes filled with regret.
"Because my mother made sure I couldn't."
"What does that mean?"
Alexander looked at Victor.
Victor closed his eyes.
Because he knew the truth was coming.
"Eleanor threatened you."
Emily said.
Alexander nodded.
"She threatened everyone."
"Richard."
"Me."
"Even Victor."
Emily looked at Victor.
"What did she have against you?"
Victor didn't answer.
And for the first time...
Emily saw shame on his face.
Not guilt.
Shame.
"Victor."
Emily said.
"Tell me."
Victor took a long breath.
"Eleanor was my wife."
The room froze.
Alexander looked at Emily.
"Yes."
"My mother was married to Victor."
Emily stared.
Too many revelations.
Too quickly.
"Eleanor Blackwell..."
"Was your mother."
Victor nodded.
"And my wife."
Emily looked between them.
The family tree had become a maze.
A maze full of lies.
Then Alexander said something even worse.
"And Richard Carter..."
He paused.
"Was the reason they divorced."
Emily felt cold.
"My father?"
Alexander nodded.
"Your father and Eleanor were partners."
"But they became something more."
"They fell in love."
The room went silent.
Victor looked down.
"He chose Richard over me."
The pain in his voice was real.
For the first time, Emily saw Victor not as a villain.
But as someone who had also been destroyed.
"Then what happened?"
Emily asked.
Victor answered.
"Eleanor couldn't accept losing control."
"She couldn't accept Richard leaving her."
"So she created a plan."
"What plan?"
Victor looked at Alexander.
"The plan that created your marriage."
Emily froze.
"What?"
Alexander looked ashamed.
"My mother didn't just send me to steal the Carter fortune."
"She sent me to replace Richard."
Emily's face changed.
"Replace him?"
Alexander nodded.
"She wanted me to become the new person controlling the Carter legacy."
"She wanted me to become the man closest to you."
"Your husband."
Emily felt sick.
The entire marriage.
The relationship.
The love.
Everything.
A plan.
But then Alexander whispered:
"Except she didn't predict one thing."
Emily looked at him.
"What?"
His voice was almost broken.
"She didn't predict that I would actually love you."
Emily said nothing.
Because she didn't know what hurt more.
The fact that he lied...
Or the fact that maybe he was telling the truth.
Suddenly...
A sound came from the entrance.
Everyone turned.
A figure stood in the doorway.
The entire room froze.
Because the person standing there...
Was the same man from the security footage.
Richard Carter.
Older.
Alive.
Looking directly at his daughter.
Emily couldn't breathe.
Her entire life had been built around losing him.
And now...
He was standing ten feet away.
Her father.
Alive.
But before Emily could move...
Richard spoke.
"Emily."
His voice was exactly the same.
And then he said the sentence that shattered everything.
"I'm sorry."
A pause.
"Because I know what they told you."
Emily couldn't move.
Richard looked at Alexander.
Then Victor.
Then the letter in her hand.
"I know you think they betrayed you."
His eyes returned to Emily.
"But the truth is..."
"I am the one who betrayed you first."
Emily's heart sank.
The same words.
The same confession.
And this time...
From the man she had spent fifteen years believing was her hero.
Richard took one step forward.
"I didn't fake my death to protect myself."
"I did it..."
"Because I was protecting you from the person who wanted you dead."
Everyone held their breath.
Emily whispered:
"Who?"
Richard looked toward the darkness outside the ballroom.
And answered:
"The person you have trusted your entire life."
The doors behind him slowly closed.
And the entire room realized something terrifying.
May you like
The enemy was not outside.
The enemy had been beside Emily all along.
