CHAPTER 14: THE FRIEND WHO BETRAYED THE CARTER FAMILY

The name on the document remained visible on the giant screen.

The entire ballroom stared at it.

Nobody wanted to believe it.

Nobody could.

Because the person behind everything...

The person who had manipulated the Carter family for years...

Was not a stranger.

Not an enemy.

Not a hidden rival.

It was someone who had stood beside Richard Carter for decades.

Someone who attended family dinners.

Someone who Emily trusted.

Someone who knew every secret.

The signature belonged to:

Jonathan Reed.

The room exploded.

Whispers spread through the guests.

"No..."

"He couldn't have..."

"Jonathan?"

The same man who had spent years protecting the Carter family.

The same man who had been shot moments ago.

The same man everyone believed was a victim.

Was he actually the mastermind?

Emily looked toward the floor.

Where Jonathan had been lying.

But he was gone.

The doctors.

The security guards.

Everyone who had surrounded him...

Was suddenly missing.

Her eyes narrowed.

"Where is Jonathan?"

Nobody answered.

That was the answer.

He was never unconscious.

He was never helpless.

The entire shooting had been a performance.

A distraction.

Richard's face became pale.

"No."

Emily turned.

"You knew."

Richard shook his head.

"I suspected."

Her expression changed.

"Suspected?"

Richard looked destroyed.

"I never wanted to believe it."

Emily stared at him.

"How long?"

Richard closed his eyes.

"Fifteen years."

The words cut through the room.

Fifteen years.

The same amount of time she had lived without her father.

The same amount of time everyone had been hiding the truth.

Emily looked around.

"So he knew."

Richard nodded.

"He knew I was alive."

"He knew about Isabella."

"He knew about Eleanor."

"He knew about everything."

Alexander stepped forward.

"Then why didn't he act sooner?"

Richard looked at him.

"Because Jonathan was never trying to destroy us."

A pause.

"He was trying to replace us."

The room went silent.

Emily felt a chill.

"What does that mean?"

Richard looked at the screen.

"Jonathan believed the Carter family had become too powerful."

"He believed no family should control that much information."

Emily frowned.

"Then why steal it?"

Richard's expression hardened.

"Because Jonathan didn't want to destroy the system."

"He wanted to own it."

The answer was simple.

And terrifying.

Power.

Not revenge.

Not justice.

Just power.

Suddenly, the ballroom speakers turned on.

A familiar voice filled the room.

Jonathan.

"Richard."

Everyone froze.

"Still trying to make yourself the hero?"

Emily looked around.

The voice came from everywhere.

Jonathan continued.

"For fifteen years, I watched you hide."

"I watched Isabella hunt you."

"I watched Eleanor destroy herself trying to control you."

"And I watched Emily grow up believing everyone around her was protecting her."

A pause.

"How poetic."

Emily stepped forward.

"Jonathan."

The voice laughed.

"Hello, Emily."

Her blood turned cold.

Because his voice was calm.

Almost friendly.

"Why?"

She asked.

The entire room waited.

Jonathan answered:

"Because your father made the same mistake everyone powerful makes."

"What mistake?"

"He believed love made him different."

Emily clenched her fists.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"Because it's true."

Jonathan continued.

"Richard built an empire based on trust."

"But trust is fragile."

"One betrayal."

"One secret."

"One weakness."

"And everything collapses."

Emily looked at Alexander.

Then Victor.

Then Richard.

She understood now.

Everyone in her life had been fighting over the same thing.

Trust.

Jonathan continued.

"I spent decades watching Richard protect people who would eventually betray him."

"He protected Eleanor."

"He protected Alexander."

"He protected Emily."

A pause.

"But who protected him?"

Nobody answered.

Because there was something almost convincing about his words.

That was the dangerous part.

Villains who believed they were villains were easy to fight.

But Jonathan believed he was right.

"You're wrong."

Emily finally spoke.

The speakers went silent for a moment.

Then Jonathan laughed.

"Am I?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you think power is the only thing that matters."

Emily looked at the people around her.

"You're wrong."

"The only reason everyone here is still standing..."

"Is because someone cared."

Jonathan became quiet.

Emily continued.

"My father cared."

"Alexander cared."

"Even people who made terrible choices cared."

She looked at the screen.

"But you never did."

A long silence.

Then Jonathan spoke.

"You sound exactly like Richard."

Emily smiled slightly.

"Good."

The room watched.

Because something had changed.

Jonathan wanted Emily to be angry.

He wanted her to become like him.

Cold.

Calculating.

Alone.

But she wasn't.

And that was what scared him.

Suddenly, every screen changed.

A countdown appeared.

10:00

Emily frowned.

"What is that?"

Jonathan answered.

"The Carter Legacy Protocol."

Richard's face changed.

"No."

Jonathan laughed.

"Yes."

Emily looked at her father.

"What happens when it reaches zero?"

Richard didn't answer.

Jonathan did.

"Every secret."

"Every account."

"Every agreement."

"Every illegal transaction."

"Every hidden crime connected to the world's elite..."

A pause.

"Will become public."

The guests panicked.

Because everyone in that room had secrets.

Everyone.

Jonathan continued.

"And when the world sees the truth..."

"The old order will collapse."

Emily stared at the countdown.

08:43

"So you want chaos."

"No."

Jonathan answered.

"I want a reset."

"A world without hidden empires."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because you're not destroying the powerful."

She looked around.

"You're destroying everyone."

Jonathan became silent.

Because she was right.

But then his voice changed.

"You still don't understand."

"What?"

"The protocol doesn't just expose secrets."

Emily froze.

"Then what does it do?"

Jonathan answered:

"It chooses a successor."

Everyone looked confused.

Richard stepped forward.

"Impossible."

Jonathan laughed.

"Your father never told you?"

Emily looked at Richard.

"What?"

Richard looked away.

And that was all the answer she needed.

Jonathan continued.

"The Carter Legacy Protocol was never designed to protect the empire."

"It was designed to transfer it."

A pause.

"And the person chosen..."

"Will control everything."

The countdown continued.

05:00

Emily looked at the document.

The protocol.

The final weapon.

The final test.

Then something strange happened.

A message appeared on her phone.

From an unknown number.

Only three words.

"Trust yourself, Emily."

She stared.

Because she recognized the number.

It was impossible.

The message came from:

Her father's old phone.

The phone buried with him fifteen years ago.

Emily looked at Richard.

Then the screen.

Then the countdown.

And suddenly she understood.

Jonathan wasn't the only one playing a game.

Someone had prepared for this moment long before tonight.

Someone had known everyone would betray her.

Someone had left her one final move.

Richard stepped closer.

"Emily."

She looked at him.

"What?"

His expression was full of regret.

"Your father didn't create the protocol to choose a successor."

Emily froze.

"Then what did he create it for?"

Richard whispered:

"To give you the power to destroy the entire system."

The countdown reached:

01:00

The ballroom lights began flashing.

Jonathan's voice returned.

"Choose carefully, Emily."

"Save the empire."

"Or destroy it."

The timer continued.

00:30

Everyone looked at her.

The woman they thought was powerless.

The woman they thought they could control.

But they forgot one thing.

Emily Carter was not fighting for power.

She was fighting for freedom.

The timer reached:

00:05

May you like

Emily placed her hand on the screen.

And made her choice.
