CHAPTER 12: THE PERSON WHO WANTED EMILY DEAD

The ballroom doors closed behind Richard Carter.
The sound echoed through the room.
A simple movement.
But it felt like a prison locking shut.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Because everyone was waiting for one answer.
The question that had haunted Emily for fifteen years.
Who wanted her dead?
Richard stood beneath the cold lights of the ballroom.
Older.
Tired.
Different from the father she remembered.
But still...
Her father.
The man she had spent half her life missing.
Emily stared at him.
A thousand emotions fought inside her.
Anger.
Relief.
Pain.
Love.
But one emotion was stronger than all the others.
Betrayal.
"You were alive."
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
Richard looked down.
"Yes."
"You watched me grow up without you."
His face tightened.
"Yes."
"You let me believe you were dead."
"Yes."
Each answer hurt more.
Because he wasn't denying anything.
He wasn't making excuses.
He was accepting every wound.
Emily laughed quietly.
A broken laugh.
"Everyone keeps saying they did it to protect me."
She looked around the room.
"Everyone."
Her eyes returned to Richard.
"But somehow..."
"Everyone still left me alone."
Richard closed his eyes.
Because he knew she was right.
"I deserve your anger."
Emily stepped closer.
"No."
Her voice became colder.
"You deserve my questions."
The room became silent.
"Who wanted me dead?"
Richard looked at her.
And for the first time...
Emily saw fear in her father's eyes.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for her.
"The person who wanted you dead..."
Richard said slowly.
"Was the person who knew you better than anyone."
Emily's expression changed.
"Who?"
Richard looked at the people around him.
At Alexander.
At Victor.
At Jonathan.
Then finally...
At Emily.
"Your mother."
The entire room froze.
Emily felt like the air had disappeared.
"My mother?"
Richard nodded.
"No."
A voice interrupted.
Everyone turned.
Victor stepped forward.
"That's impossible."
Richard looked at him.
"Is it?"
Victor's face changed.
Because he knew something.
Emily noticed.
"You knew."
Victor looked away.
"Victor."
Her voice sharpened.
"You knew."
Victor sighed.
"Not everything."
"But enough."
Emily felt the anger return.
"Why does everyone know things except me?"
Nobody answered.
Because there was no answer that would make it better.
Richard continued.
"Your mother was not the person you believed she was."
Emily shook her head.
"No."
Her voice became emotional.
"I barely remember her."
"Exactly."
Richard looked at her.
"Because I made sure you didn't."
Emily froze.
"What?"
"I removed every trace of her from your life."
The words shocked her.
"You erased my mother?"
Richard looked broken.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because she was dangerous."
Emily stared at him.
"Who was she?"
Richard took a breath.
"Her name was Isabella Voss."
The name meant nothing to Emily.
But it meant something to the others.
Victor's face turned pale.
Alexander whispered:
"No..."
Emily looked at him.
"You know her?"
Alexander nodded slowly.
"My mother knew her."
Richard continued.
"Isabella Voss was not a normal businesswoman."
"She built her empire through information."
"Secrets."
"Manipulation."
"She didn't buy companies."
"She bought people."
Emily felt cold.
"Why would she want me dead?"
Richard looked at her.
"Because you inherited something."
"The Carter Trust?"
"No."
Richard shook his head.
"Something much more dangerous."
He reached into his coat.
And removed an old photograph.
Emily recognized it immediately.
A picture of her as a child.
Standing beside her father.
But there was something else.
A woman standing behind them.
Her mother.
And in her mother's hand...
Was a document.
Richard handed it to her.
"Your mother discovered the truth about the Carter legacy."
Emily looked confused.
"What truth?"
Richard's voice lowered.
"The Carter family wealth was never just money."
He paused.
"It was built around a network."
"A network of information."
Emily stared.
"What kind of information?"
"Every secret held by the world's most powerful people."
The room went silent.
Richard continued.
"Your grandfather created it decades ago."
"He believed information was the only currency that never lost value."
Emily looked at the document.
"So my family didn't just control money."
Richard nodded.
"They controlled knowledge."
A dangerous thought entered Emily's mind.
"And my mother wanted it."
"Yes."
"She wanted access."
"Yes."
"But why kill me?"
Richard looked at her.
"Because the system only recognized one true heir."
Emily's fingers tightened around the paper.
"Me."
Richard nodded.
"Your blood."
"Your identity."
"Your existence."
Emily finally understood.
Her mother didn't want her fortune.
She wanted her erased.
"If I disappeared..."
Richard continued.
"She could create a new heir."
The room went silent.
"Who?"
Richard looked toward Alexander.
Nobody breathed.
Because they all knew.
Alexander stepped back.
"No."
Richard's eyes were full of regret.
"She planned to use Alexander."
Emily looked at her husband.
The realization hit harder than expected.
The entire time...
Everyone had been fighting over her.
Not because they loved her.
Because they needed what she represented.
Power.
Legacy.
Control.
Alexander looked at Emily.
"I didn't know."
She stared at him.
"You didn't know anything."
The words hurt.
But they were true.
Richard continued.
"Your mother planned everything."
"The marriage."
"The companies."
"The alliances."
"Everything."
Emily looked at him.
"Then why did Alexander really marry me?"
Nobody answered.
Until Richard said:
"Because Isabella needed someone close enough to control you."
Emily looked at Alexander.
Her heart tightened.
"And he agreed."
Alexander lowered his eyes.
"Yes."
The confession was quiet.
But devastating.
Richard continued.
"But then something happened."
Emily looked at him.
"What?"
"Alexander changed."
Richard glanced at him.
"He was supposed to betray you."
"But instead..."
"He protected you."
Emily looked confused.
"Protected me?"
Richard nodded.
"Do you remember the accident five years ago?"
Emily froze.
The accident.
The one where her car brakes failed.
The one everyone called an unfortunate mechanical failure.
Richard's expression darkened.
"That wasn't an accident."
Emily's breathing stopped.
"What?"
"Your mother tried to remove you."
The room went silent.
"And Alexander stopped it."
Emily looked at Alexander.
He looked away.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Alexander whispered:
"Because if you knew..."
"I knew she would come after you again."
Emily stared at him.
For the first time that night...
She saw something she never expected.
Not manipulation.
Not ambition.
Fear.
Fear for her.
Richard looked at his daughter.
"But there is something you still don't know."
Emily turned.
"What?"
Richard hesitated.
"The reason Isabella wants you dead now..."
"Is because she knows something."
"What?"
Richard looked at the letter.
The Carter symbol.
"The Omega Clause was never the final weapon."
Emily frowned.
"Then what is?"
Richard's expression became serious.
"You."
A silence followed.
"Your father created a final condition."
"A condition only you can activate."
Emily felt cold.
"What condition?"
Richard stepped closer.
"He knew one day every powerful person around you might betray you."
"So he created a way for you to judge them."
Emily looked confused.
"Judge them?"
Richard nodded.
"The Carter Legacy Protocol."
The name alone sounded dangerous.
"What does it do?"
Richard looked at Alexander.
Then Victor.
Then Emily.
"It decides who deserves to survive."
The room froze.
Before anyone could ask what that meant...
Every screen in the ballroom turned on.
A woman's face appeared.
Isabella Voss.
Emily's mother.
Alive.
Smiling.
And her first words were:
"Hello, Emily."
A pause.
"I've waited twenty years to finally meet my daughter."
Emily couldn't move.
Because her mother smiled and said:
"Now let me explain why your father lied to you."
May you like
The screen flickered.
And the truth was finally about to begin.
