Chapter 8: The Woman in the Black Veil

The speedboat rocked gently against Pier Seventeen.
Its engine purred, ready to leave at a second's notice.
The woman at the helm wore the same black veil Claire remembered from ten years ago.
She hadn't aged much.
Dark hair tied neatly beneath the veil.
Sharp gray eyes.
Calm.
Watchful.
As if she had been expecting this moment for years.
Behind Claire, another sniper round shattered the windshield of Charles Whitmore's SUV.
The harbor erupted into more gunfire.
The woman raised her voice just enough to cut through the chaos.
"Claire!"
"You have thirty seconds!"
Ryan grabbed Lucas and sprinted toward the pier.
Emma stayed close to Claire.
Captain Brooks limped behind them, blood soaking through the bandage wrapped around his shoulder.
Charles emerged from behind the SUV, furious.
"Stop them!"
The surviving guards fired.
Bullets sparked off steel railings.
One slammed into a fuel drum nearby.
Diesel spilled across the concrete.
Claire reached the boat first.
The veiled woman extended her hand.
"Come."
Claire hesitated.
She was exhausted from trusting the wrong people.
Ryan.
Victor.
Even Brooks had hidden the truth.
The woman saw the doubt in her eyes.
"You don't know me."
"But your father did."
Claire's breath caught.
The woman quietly added,
"He called me... Sophia."
Another bullet ricocheted off the dock.
Emma screamed.
Claire made her decision.
She grabbed Sophia's hand and climbed aboard.
Ryan lifted Lucas onto the boat next.
Captain Brooks followed, grimacing in pain.
Only Emma remained on the dock.
She slipped.
Her foot caught between two wooden planks.
Claire reached for her.
"Emma!"
A burst of gunfire struck the pier.
Splinters exploded into the air.
Emma cried out.
"I can't move!"
Claire leaned farther over the edge.
Their fingertips brushed.
Not enough.
Ryan immediately dropped to his knees and helped pull Emma free.
The instant she climbed aboard, Sophia slammed the throttle forward.
The speedboat shot into the darkness just as another volley of bullets tore through the pier.
Charles watched them disappear.
His face remained strangely calm.
One of his wounded guards staggered over.
"Sir..."
"We lost them."
Charles adjusted his gloves.
"No."
He looked toward the black ocean.
"They're sailing exactly where I want them."
The guard frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Charles smiled.
"Ask Victor."
Twenty minutes later...
The harbor lights had vanished behind them.
Only the moon reflected across the waves.
No one spoke.
Lucas finally broke the silence.
"Thank you..."
Claire looked down at him.
"For what?"
"For saving my dad."
She didn't answer.
Ryan looked away.
Sophia steered the boat with practiced confidence.
She hadn't introduced herself beyond her name.
She hadn't explained why she had appeared.
Claire finally asked the question that had haunted her for years.
"Were you at my father's funeral?"
Sophia nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I couldn't attend his real funeral."
Claire frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Sophia glanced toward the horizon.
"Your father didn't die the day everyone thinks he did."
The boat fell silent.
Even Ryan looked up.
Claire's voice barely escaped her lips.
"...What?"
Sophia slowed the boat.
"Ten years ago, Nathan Mercer disappeared."
"Everyone believed he drowned."
"That was the story Black Tide created."
Claire's pulse quickened.
"I saw a video of him."
"I know."
"He was alive three months ago."
Sophia nodded again.
"Yes."
Claire grabbed the side of the boat so hard her knuckles turned white.
"Then where is he?"
Sophia's expression darkened.
"I don't know."
Ryan suddenly spoke.
"I do."
Everyone turned toward him.
Claire stared.
"You knew?"
Ryan sighed.
"I knew... once."
Claire's voice trembled with anger.
"You let me mourn him for ten years."
Ryan met her gaze without flinching.
"I wasn't allowed to tell you."
Claire laughed bitterly.
"You weren't allowed?"
"You murdered people because someone told you to."
Ryan closed his eyes.
"I know."
Sophia interrupted before Claire could continue.
"The Council took Nathan."
"They needed him alive."
Claire frowned.
"For what?"
"Because no one understood Black Tide's shipping network better than he did."
Ryan quietly added,
"He designed it."
Claire slowly turned toward him.
"My father built Black Tide?"
Ryan shook his head.
"He built a global shipping company."
"The Council turned it into Black Tide after forcing him to work for them."
Sophia nodded.
"That's the truth."
Claire's world shifted beneath her.
Everything she believed about her father was changing.
He wasn't part of Black Tide by choice.
He had become its prisoner.
Then another memory surfaced.
The video.
"You don't leave Black Tide."
Nathan hadn't been negotiating.
He had been pleading.
Captain Brooks suddenly stood.
His face had gone pale.
"Turn around."
Sophia frowned.
"What?"
Brooks pointed toward the darkness behind them.
"Someone's following us."
Everyone looked.
At first...
Nothing.
Then...
Tiny white lights appeared across the water.
One.
Three.
Five.
More.
Sophia whispered,
"Impossible..."
Ryan immediately recognized them.
"They're interceptor boats."
Lucas looked frightened.
"Who's chasing us?"
Ryan answered quietly.
"The people I spent the last fifteen years working for."
Sophia pushed the engines to full power.
The speedboat surged forward.
Behind them, the lights spread into a wide formation.
Not random.
Military precision.
Emma looked over her shoulder.
"They're gaining."
Ryan studied the pattern.
"They're herding us."
Claire frowned.
"Herding us where?"
No one answered.
Ten minutes later...
The answer appeared.
A wall of jagged black cliffs rose from the sea.
The speedboat raced toward a narrow opening barely visible between the rocks.
Sophia's eyes widened.
"No..."
Ryan cursed under his breath.
"They know."
Claire looked between them.
"Know what?"
Sophia's grip tightened on the wheel.
"There's only one safe passage."
Ryan finished the sentence.
"And it's trapped."
Behind them, the interceptor boats accelerated.
Ahead, the rocky channel narrowed until it was barely wider than the boat itself.
Sophia had no room to turn around.
Claire glanced at the GPS screen.
One blinking red dot suddenly appeared in the center of the passage.
Then another.
Then dozens.
Ryan's face drained of color.
"They planted naval mines."
The first explosion erupted less than fifty meters ahead.
A towering column of water exploded into the night sky.
The shockwave rocked the boat violently.
Lucas screamed.
Emma lost her balance.
Sophia fought the wheel with both hands.
Claire looked toward the deadly maze of mines stretching between the cliffs.
Then...
The GPS screen flickered.
A hidden message replaced the map.
Only six words appeared.
"Trust the lighthouse. Not the sea."
Claire stared into the darkness.
Far above the cliffs...
A lonely lighthouse suddenly flashed.
Once.
Twice.
Then...
Three times.
May you like
As if someone inside was signaling directly to them.
