Chapter 13: The Last Key

Claire instinctively stepped back.

Her fingers tightened around the silver necklace resting against her chest.

The pendant suddenly felt heavier than ever before.

Not because of its weight.

Because of what Alexander had just said.

"It was the key."

The words echoed through the freezing night.

Claire looked toward her father.

Nathan was still standing behind the reinforced glass aboard Prison Ship 13.

He shook his head violently.

"No!"

His voice cracked through the speakers.

"Don't believe him!"

Alexander smiled without taking his eyes off Claire.

"Your father has always been an excellent liar."

Nathan slammed both fists against the glass.

"I hid it to protect her!"

Alexander finally nodded.

"That part is true."

The sea battle had almost stopped.

Missiles no longer crossed the sky.

Council warships.

Victor's remaining forces.

Even Charles Whitmore's fleet.

Everyone had turned toward Ship 13.

Toward Claire.

Toward the necklace.

The war wasn't about territory anymore.

It was about a single piece of silver.

Claire slowly removed the necklace.

The chain glimmered in the firelight.

She remembered the day Nathan had given it to her.

Her twelfth birthday.

He had smiled as he fastened it around her neck.

"Never take this off."

"Even if you stop believing in me..."

"Believe in this."

At the time, she'd thought it was simply a keepsake.

A father's gift.

Now...

It had become the center of a war.

Ryan stared at the pendant.

"I've seen it every day for years."

Claire looked at him.

"You never suspected?"

He shook his head.

"Nathan never let anyone touch it."

"He even repaired the clasp himself whenever it broke."

Ryan swallowed hard.

"I thought it was because it reminded him of your mother."

Nathan closed his eyes.

"It did."

Alexander stepped to the edge of Ship 13.

"I'm giving you one opportunity."

Claire remained silent.

"Bring me the necklace."

"And your father walks free."

Emma whispered,

"Don't."

Captain Brooks nodded.

"It's a trap."

Victor's voice crackled over the radio.

"Claire!"

"Destroy it!"

Alexander laughed.

"Interesting."

He looked toward Victor's burning flagship.

"You'd rather lose the Atlas Network forever?"

Victor answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

Claire frowned.

Something didn't fit.

Everyone wanted different things.

Alexander wanted the necklace.

Victor wanted it destroyed.

Nathan wanted her to keep it away from everyone.

Charles wanted Claire alive.

None of it made sense.

Unless...

They weren't fighting over the same object.

She looked down at the pendant.

Then at the tiny seam she'd discovered weeks earlier.

The hidden compartment.

The USB had been inside.

But...

What if there was another compartment?

She pressed the gemstone.

Nothing.

She twisted the silver ring.

Nothing.

She remembered something Nathan had taught her as a child.

"The safest lock is the one people don't know exists."

Claire rotated the pendant ninety degrees.

A faint click.

The bottom half slid open.

Everyone stared.

Inside wasn't another USB.

Nor a key.

Just a tiny strip of transparent crystal.

No larger than her fingernail.

Alexander's calm expression vanished.

"There it is."

Adrian whispered,

"My God..."

Sophia closed her eyes.

"So Nathan really did it."

Emma frowned.

"What is it?"

Captain Brooks answered softly.

"A quantum crystal."

Ryan looked at him in surprise.

"You've seen one before?"

"No."

"I only read about them."

Brooks stared at the tiny object.

"They were supposed to be impossible to manufacture."

Nathan's voice echoed proudly.

"They were."

Alexander's composure returned.

He smiled once more.

"You've hidden it well, Nathan."

Nathan answered,

"No."

"I hid it where only Claire would carry it willingly."

Claire looked between them.

"What does it actually do?"

Alexander answered first.

"It unlocks the Atlas Network."

Nathan shouted,

"It destroys it!"

Silence.

Two completely opposite answers.

Only one could be true.

Claire closed the pendant.

She suddenly remembered something else.

The handwritten note Nathan had hidden years ago.

Trust the lighthouse. Not the sea.

The lighthouse.

Not the sea.

He had never written...

Trust no one.

He had written...

Trust the lighthouse.

Claire looked toward Sophia.

"Who operated the lighthouse?"

Sophia blinked.

"My team."

"Who gave you the signal codes?"

"Nathan."

Claire nodded slowly.

"My father always left instructions."

"He never left impossible choices."

She looked at Alexander.

"If you're telling the truth..."

"Tell me one thing."

He smiled.

"Anything."

"When my father gave me this necklace..."

"...what did he say?"

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

For the first time...

He hesitated.

Only for a second.

Then he replied,

"He said it would keep you safe."

Claire's eyes narrowed.

Wrong.

Nathan had never said that.

He had said:

"Believe in this."

Not...

"It will keep you safe."

A tiny difference.

But Nathan never wasted words.

Claire turned toward the prison window.

Her father met her gaze.

Almost imperceptibly...

He nodded.

Alexander had lied.

Alexander realized it the same moment she did.

His smile disappeared.

"I'm done negotiating."

He snapped his fingers.

The side doors of Ship 13 opened wider.

Dozens of armed guards poured onto the deck.

Not mercenaries.

Not Council soldiers.

Uniforms unlike anything Claire had seen before.

Black armor.

Featureless helmets.

Silent.

Disciplined.

Ryan whispered,

"I've never seen them."

Victor's voice came urgently over the radio.

"They're the Custodians."

Charles Whitmore spoke almost at the same time.

"Retreat immediately!"

Neither side obeyed.

Everyone was staring at the same thing.

Claire.

And the pendant in her hand.

Alexander took one final step forward.

His voice was no longer warm.

No longer patient.

It was cold enough to freeze the sea.

"You have sixty seconds."

"Give me the crystal."

"Or I execute Nathan Mercer."

He raised a small remote control.

Behind him...

The reinforced glass holding Nathan slowly slid open.

Two guards forced Nathan onto his knees.

One pressed a pistol against the back of his head.

Claire's world narrowed.

The ocean.

The warships.

The flames.

Everything disappeared.

There was only her father.

And sixty seconds.

Then...

Nathan looked directly into her eyes.

Instead of fear...

He smiled.

And silently mouthed four words she recognized immediately.

"The key is fake."

Claire's heart stopped.

If the crystal was fake...

May you like

Then where was the real key?
