Chapter 5: The First Bullet

Ryan's finger tightened on the trigger.
The tunnel fell silent.
Water dripped from the ceiling.
The red laser sights trembled across Claire's chest like a swarm of hungry insects.
Jason smiled.
Emma couldn't stop shaking.
Captain Brooks slowly stepped in front of Claire.
Ryan sighed.
"Elias..."
"I told you years ago not to get emotionally attached."
Brooks didn't move.
"I'm standing where Nathan once stood for me."
Ryan's expression hardened.
"So be it."
He fired.
The gunshot exploded through the tunnel.
Claire instinctively closed her eyes.
A heavy body slammed into her.
Brooks grunted in pain.
The bullet tore through his left shoulder instead of Claire's heart.
"Run!" he shouted.
Claire grabbed Emma's hand.
They sprinted deeper into the tunnel.
Gunfire erupted behind them.
Concrete shattered around them.
Fragments sprayed across the floor.
Jason barked orders.
"Alive!"
Ryan answered without taking his eyes off Claire.
"For now."
The tunnel suddenly widened into an enormous underground chamber.
Claire stopped.
Her breath caught.
Rows of shipping containers stretched into darkness.
Hundreds of them.
Some stacked three stories high.
Others connected by steel walkways.
Forklifts.
Fuel tanks.
Crates marked with fake company logos.
It wasn't an escape tunnel.
It was a hidden underground port.
Emma whispered,
"My God..."
Claire understood immediately.
This was the real headquarters.
The place Black Tide never wanted anyone to find.
Behind them...
Ryan entered the chamber.
He lowered his pistol.
"Seal every exit."
Metal doors slammed shut one after another.
The sound echoed throughout the warehouse.
Jason laughed.
"They're trapped."
Ryan shook his head.
"No."
"They're exactly where we need them."
Claire pulled Emma behind a stack of containers.
She forced herself to breathe.
Think.
Panic kills.
Her instructor's voice echoed in her mind once more.
She looked around carefully.
Forklifts.
Overhead cranes.
Fuel lines.
Electrical control panels.
A maze.
She didn't need to defeat twenty armed men.
She only needed chaos.
Jason divided the search teams.
"Groups of four."
"They can't get far."
One guard frowned.
"What about the old fuel storage?"
Jason smiled.
"Good."
"If they hide there..."
"...they'll save us time."
Claire overheard everything.
Fuel storage.
Dangerous.
Explosive.
Perfect.
She whispered to Emma,
"Follow me."
Captain Brooks staggered behind a steel pillar, pressing one hand against his bleeding shoulder.
His radio crackled.
Victor's voice came through.
"Status."
"They found the underground port."
A long silence.
Then Victor asked,
"Is Claire alive?"
"For now."
Another pause.
Victor quietly replied,
"Then the game has officially begun."
Claire reached the fuel storage area.
Dozens of enormous diesel tanks towered above them.
Pipes crossed the ceiling.
Emergency sprinklers lined every wall.
She noticed something else.
A maintenance console.
Still powered.
Emma stared.
"What are you doing?"
Claire knelt.
"My father taught me one thing."
"What?"
"Every machine has an emergency stop."
She opened the control panel.
Most of the labels were technical.
Pressure.
Ventilation.
Fire suppression.
Then she found it.
Automatic Containment Override
Protected by a small glass cover.
Claire smiled.
"Found you."
Ryan watched security monitors from the warehouse control room.
One screen flickered.
Another went black.
Jason frowned.
"They're tampering with something."
Ryan zoomed in.
The camera focused on Claire.
He watched her break the protective glass.
His smile vanished.
"No..."
Claire slammed the emergency switch.
For one second...
Nothing happened.
Then sirens exploded throughout the underground complex.
Red warning lights flashed.
A computerized voice echoed endlessly.
"Fire suppression system activated."
Massive steel blast doors began descending from the ceiling.
Forklifts stopped automatically.
Power shut down across half the facility.
The lights flickered.
Darkness swallowed entire sections of the warehouse.
Jason cursed.
"She doesn't even know what she just did!"
Ryan's face turned pale.
"Oh, she will."
Deep beneath the warehouse...
Automatic valves opened.
Thousands of gallons of fire-suppression foam rushed into the underground complex.
Within seconds...
White foam flooded the floors.
First ankle deep.
Then knee deep.
Visibility dropped to almost nothing.
Search teams shouted in confusion.
"I can't see!"
"Where are they?"
"This way!"
"No, over here!"
Claire grabbed Emma's arm.
"This is our chance."
Hidden by the growing sea of white foam, they slipped between containers unnoticed.
Then Claire heard something.
A child crying.
She froze.
Emma looked around.
"Did you hear that?"
Again.
A faint cry.
Very close.
Claire followed the sound.
Behind a locked shipping container...
Small fingers wrapped around the ventilation holes.
Claire's blood turned to ice.
Someone was inside.
She peered through the opening.
Not cargo.
People.
At least eight frightened children.
The oldest couldn't have been more than twelve.
One little girl whispered,
"Please..."
"Don't leave us."
Claire stepped backward in horror.
Black Tide wasn't only smuggling goods.
It was trafficking human lives.
Emma covered her mouth to stop herself from screaming.
Claire's entire body trembled.
She had wanted revenge.
Now...
This wasn't personal anymore.
Ryan arrived seconds later.
He saw Claire standing beside the container.
His expression changed.
He realized exactly what she had discovered.
For the first time...
Ryan looked genuinely worried.
"Claire."
His voice was calm.
"Walk away."
She slowly turned toward him.
"There are children in here."
Ryan remained silent.
"You told me you imported medical equipment."
Silence.
"You lied about everything."
Ryan lowered his weapon.
"You're seeing only part of the picture."
Claire's eyes filled with rage.
"What picture could possibly justify this?"
Ryan answered quietly,
"If I tell you..."
"...you'll understand why none of us are allowed to leave Black Tide."
Claire laughed bitterly.
"You expect me to believe that?"
Ryan looked at the frightened faces inside the container.
Then back at Claire.
"I don't expect you to believe me."
"I expect you to survive long enough to learn the truth."
Before Claire could respond...
A deafening explosion ripped through the far side of the underground port.
The blast wave knocked everyone off their feet.
The lights went out completely.
Emergency alarms screamed.
Someone had detonated explosives.
Jason shouted through the darkness,
"Ryan!"
A panicked voice answered from another section,
"The western wall is collapsing!"
Concrete cracked overhead.
The entire underground complex began to shake.
Ryan looked upward.
His face lost all color.
"No..."
Claire had expected Ryan to chase her.
Instead...
He dropped his pistol.
And ran toward the collapsing section.
Not away from danger.
Toward it.
As another explosion thundered through the underground port...
A terrified scream echoed from beyond the smoke.
"Dad!"
Ryan stopped dead in his tracks.
Claire's eyes widened.
Dad?
Ryan had no children.
At least...
May you like
None that she had ever known.
