Chapter 10: The Prisoner Who Planned Everything

Claire's hands trembled.

The photograph almost slipped from her fingers.

Her father was alive.

There was no doubt.

The scar above his left eyebrow, the one he got teaching her to ride a bicycle, was still there. The silver wedding band he had refused to remove after Claire's mother died still circled his finger.

But it was the message that stole the air from her lungs.

Don't trust Adrian.

Claire slowly looked up.

Adrian Kane was still smiling.

Patient.

As if he already knew what the photograph said.

"You've read it."

Claire folded the picture and quietly slipped it into her jacket.

"You knew he'd write that."

Adrian gave a small shrug.

"Nathan has never liked me."

Ryan let out a bitter laugh.

"That's an understatement."

The ship's heavy doors closed behind them with a metallic boom.

Locks engaged automatically.

Claire turned.

"We're prisoners."

"No," Adrian replied calmly.

"You're guests."

Ryan stepped forward.

"Open the doors."

Adrian ignored him.

Instead, he gestured toward a long dining table set in the center of the vast cargo deck.

Fresh food.

Coffee.

Clean towels.

Medical supplies.

Everything had already been prepared.

"As I said," Adrian smiled.

"I've been expecting all of you."

Captain Brooks frowned.

"You knew we'd escape the harbor."

"I did."

"You knew Charles would attack."

"Of course."

Ryan's patience snapped.

"You manipulated all of this!"

Adrian looked at him almost sympathetically.

"I simply understood where every player would move."

He picked up a chess piece from the table.

A white queen.

He placed it in front of Claire.

"Your father always said..."

"The game isn't won by the strongest piece."

"It's won by the one nobody sees coming."

Claire remembered those words.

Nathan had said them while teaching her chess when she was nine.

Only three people had been in the room that day.

Nathan.

Claire.

And...

Ryan.

She looked sharply toward her former husband.

"You knew Adrian before we met."

Ryan nodded.

"For years."

Emma looked around the empty ship.

"Where's the crew?"

Adrian smiled.

"You've already met them."

Everyone fell silent.

Brooks slowly whispered,

"...What?"

Adrian spread his hands.

"The crew doesn't exist."

"The Acheron sails automatically."

Claire stared at him.

"That's impossible."

"It was."

He nodded toward the bridge.

"Your father designed that system fifteen years ago."

Claire's mind raced.

Nathan hadn't just built shipping routes.

He had been creating technology far beyond anything she'd imagined.

Lucas tugged on Ryan's sleeve.

"Dad..."

Ryan knelt.

"What is it?"

The boy pointed toward the far end of the deck.

"There are cameras."

Everyone looked.

Tiny black lenses watched every angle of the ship.

Not one.

Dozens.

Claire suddenly realized something.

"This isn't transportation."

Adrian nodded approvingly.

"It's an interview."

Without warning, every monitor on the deck lit up.

A single symbol appeared.

A black wave inside a silver circle.

Ryan's face went pale.

"The Council."

The screens flickered.

Then Charles Whitmore appeared.

Alive.

Perfectly composed.

As though the harbor attack had never happened.

He smiled politely.

"Good evening."

Claire frowned.

"You let us escape."

Charles inclined his head.

"Naturally."

Ryan cursed under his breath.

Adrian didn't react at all.

Claire looked between them.

"What is this?"

Charles answered.

"A selection."

The room fell silent.

Charles continued.

"For decades..."

"Black Tide has survived because every generation chooses its successor."

He looked directly at Claire.

"Your father refused."

"Ryan failed."

"Victor betrayed us."

His smile widened.

"Which leaves only one candidate."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"Me?"

Charles nodded.

"You carry Nathan Mercer's blood."

"You understand shipping."

"You survived impossible odds."

"You even saved the man who tried to murder you."

Ryan looked down.

Unable to meet her eyes.

Charles folded his hands.

"You've already proven everything we wished to test."

Claire felt sick.

"The yacht..."

"The harbor..."

"The mines..."

Charles smiled.

"All examinations."

Emma exploded.

"People died!"

Charles answered with chilling calm.

"They were acceptable losses."

Claire stepped toward the screen.

"I'll never work for you."

Charles chuckled.

"That isn't your decision."

He pressed something out of view.

Another monitor came to life.

Claire froze.

It showed a dimly lit room.

Nathan Mercer sat chained to a steel chair.

Older.

Weaker.

But unmistakably alive.

He slowly lifted his head.

The camera zoomed closer.

Nathan spoke only one sentence.

"Claire..."

"Whatever they offer..."

"...say no."

The screen immediately went black.

Claire rushed toward it.

"No!"

Charles's voice echoed across the ship.

"You have forty-eight hours."

"Accept leadership..."

"Or watch your father die."

The transmission ended.

Silence settled over the deck.

Lucas quietly wrapped his arms around Ryan.

Emma stared at the blank screens.

Captain Brooks lowered himself into a chair, exhausted.

Only Adrian remained standing.

Claire rounded on him.

"You knew."

"I knew enough."

"You brought us here anyway."

"It was the only place Charles couldn't immediately reach."

Claire laughed bitterly.

"And now we're trapped."

"For the moment."

Ryan walked toward the ship's bridge.

Claire followed.

The others gave them space.

When the automatic door closed behind them, Ryan finally spoke.

"I never wanted you involved."

Claire's eyes flashed.

"You threw me into the ocean."

Ryan closed his eyes.

"I thought..."

"You thought I'd drown."

"Yes."

Claire stepped closer.

"You don't get to explain that away."

"I know."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You don't."

For several long seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Ryan reached into the inside pocket of his jacket.

He placed a small brass key in Claire's hand.

"I've carried this for eleven years."

Claire frowned.

"What is it?"

"Your father gave it to me."

She stared at the key.

"Why didn't he give it to me?"

Ryan looked toward the dark sea beyond the bridge windows.

"Because he said..."

"Claire wouldn't be ready until Black Tide came for her."

Claire whispered,

"Ready for what?"

Ryan answered without turning around.

"For the truth about your mother."

Claire's breath caught.

"My mother died of cancer."

Ryan slowly faced her.

"No."

The pain in his expression was real.

"She was murdered."

Before Claire could speak, alarms erupted throughout the ship.

Red emergency lights flashed.

Adrian's voice echoed over the intercom.

"Everyone to the main deck!"

"Now!"

Ryan and Claire rushed outside.

The others were already staring toward the horizon.

Claire followed their gaze.

Three enormous warships had emerged from the fog.

Not cargo vessels.

Not patrol boats.

Gray military hulls.

Missile launchers.

Helicopters.

No national flags.

Only the same silver wave symbol painted across each bow.

Captain Brooks whispered in disbelief,

"The Council's private fleet..."

Sophia slowly lowered her binoculars.

"They found us."

Then every radio aboard the Acheron crackled to life.

A familiar voice spoke.

Cold.

Measured.

Unmistakable.

"Adrian..."

Victor Hale stepped onto the deck of the lead warship, dressed in a dark naval coat.

"You've been hiding my daughter long enough."

Claire's eyes widened.

My daughter?

The words hit harder than any bullet.

Victor looked straight at her.

Then he said the one sentence that shattered everything she believed.

"Claire..."

May you like

"I'm your biological father."
