Chapter 11: Blood Lies

The sea went silent.
Not because the waves had stopped.
Because no one aboard the Acheron could breathe.
Claire stared across the water at Victor Hale.
Her biological father?
The words echoed in her mind, refusing to make sense.
"No..."
She shook her head.
"You're lying."
Victor stood motionless on the bridge wing of the lead warship, the wind pulling at his dark coat.
"I expected that reaction."
Claire reached into her jacket and pulled out the photograph of Nathan Mercer.
"My father is Nathan Mercer."
Victor smiled sadly.
"No."
"Nathan Mercer was the man who raised you."
Ryan looked away.
He already knew.
Claire saw it immediately.
"You knew."
Ryan didn't answer.
"You knew?"
Finally, he nodded.
"For years."
Claire crossed the deck in three furious strides and slapped him.
The crack echoed through the ship.
Lucas flinched.
Emma covered her mouth.
Ryan didn't move.
He accepted it.
"You lied about my father."
"Yes."
"You lied about my mother's death."
"Yes."
"You tried to kill me."
Ryan closed his eyes.
"...Yes."
Claire's voice broke.
"Was anything between us real?"
Ryan looked at her for a long moment.
Then quietly said,
"Everything after I fell in love with you."
Claire laughed.
A sharp, painful laugh.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"I don't expect forgiveness."
"I expect hatred."
"You earned it."
"I know."
On the warship, Victor raised a hand.
A loudspeaker carried his voice across the water.
"Claire."
"Nathan begged me to keep this secret."
Claire looked up.
"I don't care what you say."
Victor nodded.
"You will."
He signaled to someone behind him.
A massive outdoor screen unfolded above the deck of the warship.
Static.
Then...
An old home video appeared.
A young Nathan Mercer laughed as he held a baby.
Claire.
Beside him stood Claire's mother, Evelyn.
And standing just outside the frame...
Victor.
Young.
Smiling.
The timestamp read:
May 14, 2001.
Nathan turned toward the camera.
"Victor..."
"I still think this is a mistake."
Victor laughed.
"One day she'll understand."
The recording ended.
Claire felt dizzy.
Emma gently caught her arm.
"What does this prove?"
Claire whispered.
"They knew each other before I was born."
Sophia stepped forward.
"That's not the whole truth."
Victor looked at her.
"No."
"It isn't."
Sophia faced Claire.
"Your mother married Nathan."
"She loved Nathan."
"But..."
Claire's pulse quickened.
"But what?"
Sophia closed her eyes.
"Months before the wedding..."
"Your mother and Victor had a brief relationship."
The words landed like stones.
"When she discovered she was pregnant..."
"Everyone believed Nathan was the father."
Victor spoke from the warship.
"Because that's what Evelyn wanted."
Claire couldn't think.
Her memories.
Her childhood.
Her family.
Every certainty was collapsing.
Adrian quietly approached.
"Claire."
She didn't answer.
He handed her a sealed envelope.
"Your father asked me to give you this only if Victor revealed the truth."
Claire slowly opened it.
Inside was a DNA report.
The date was twelve years old.
She read the names.
Father: Victor Hale
Probability of paternity: 99.998%.
Nathan's signature appeared at the bottom.
So did Evelyn's.
And Victor's.
Claire almost dropped the paper.
Nathan had known.
Her entire life.
Ryan spoke softly.
"He chose you."
Claire looked at him.
"What?"
"Nathan chose to be your father."
"He never once called you anything else."
Sophia nodded.
"He loved you more than anyone."
Victor's expression softened.
"I never tried to replace him."
Claire looked across the water.
"Then why are you here now?"
Victor answered immediately.
"Because Nathan asked me to protect you."
Ryan laughed bitterly.
"You're ten years late."
Victor didn't deny it.
Suddenly...
The radar alarm aboard the Acheron shrieked.
Captain Brooks looked down at the display.
His face drained of color.
"Multiple contacts."
Adrian rushed to the navigation console.
"What now?"
Brooks enlarged the map.
Everyone stared.
The three warships weren't alone anymore.
Dozens of fast-moving vessels were approaching from every direction.
Sophia whispered,
"Those aren't Council ships."
Victor frowned and turned toward his own radar operator.
The operator shouted,
"Unknown fleet approaching!"
Within minutes...
Black helicopters appeared over the horizon.
Attack drones buzzed above the sea.
None carried the silver wave symbol.
Instead...
Each displayed a red trident.
Ryan's face went pale.
"No..."
Emma looked around.
"Who are they?"
No one answered.
Finally...
Victor spoke one name.
"The Leviathan Syndicate."
Even Charles Whitmore's calm voice suddenly crackled over every radio frequency.
"This is impossible..."
"They found us."
Claire frowned.
"I thought Black Tide controlled everything."
Victor shook his head.
"No."
"We control the oceans."
He looked toward the approaching fleet.
"They control wars."
The first missile streaked across the sky.
It wasn't aimed at the Acheron.
It slammed into the lead Council warship.
The explosion lit the night like a second sunrise.
Victor was thrown to the deck.
Men screamed.
Fire erupted across the vessel.
A second missile followed.
Then a third.
Within seconds...
The sea became a battlefield.
Council warships returned fire.
Helicopters launched.
Machine guns roared.
Missiles crossed the night in blazing arcs.
Claire had expected a confrontation.
Not a naval war.
Amid the chaos, Adrian grabbed Claire's shoulder.
"We're leaving."
Claire pulled away.
"My father is over there."
"So is Victor."
"He could die."
Adrian looked her straight in the eyes.
"If Victor dies tonight..."
"...Nathan dies tomorrow."
Claire froze.
"What?"
Adrian pointed toward the burning warship.
"Victor is the only person Charles still fears."
"Without him..."
"Nathan loses his last protection."
Claire looked across the battlefield.
Victor slowly climbed to his feet on the damaged warship.
Blood ran down his forehead.
Yet he was shouting orders, refusing to retreat.
She had hated him for only a few hours.
Now...
She didn't even know who he was.
Her biological father.
Nathan's closest friend.
Or another liar wearing a different mask.
Then...
A desperate voice burst through the emergency radio.
"Mayday! Mayday!"
Claire recognized it instantly.
Nathan.
Weak.
Panicked.
"If anyone can hear me..."
"They've moved me..."
"I don't have much time..."
Static swallowed the transmission.
Then one final sentence came through.
"They're not holding me on land..."
Claire leaned toward the radio.
"Dad!"
Only static answered.
Ryan's eyes widened as realization hit him.
He looked toward the burning ocean, then at Adrian.
"They moved him to..."
Adrian finished the sentence.
"...a prison ship."
And just beyond the smoke, barely visible through the flames...
A gigantic black vessel emerged from the darkness.
No lights.
No markings.
Only a single white number painted across its bow.
May you like
13.
