Chapter 4: The Devil You Know

Rain hammered the pavement.

For one suspended heartbeat, the world seemed to stop.

Claire stood between two impossible choices.

Behind her, armed men stormed through Emma's house.

In front of her, Victor held out an empty hand, his face unreadable.

And behind the wheel of Victor's SUV sat Captain Elias Brooks.

The man who had pulled her from the sea.

The man who had just given the smallest shake of his head.

Don't.

It was barely noticeable.

A movement so subtle that anyone else would have missed it.

But Claire saw it.

The message wasn't meant for Victor.

It was meant for her.

Victor took one slow step forward.

"You don't have much time."

Claire kept her eyes on him.

"If you're trying to save me," she asked, "why are your men breaking into houses?"

"They're not my men."

Claire almost laughed.

"Really?"

Victor glanced toward the shattered back door of Emma's home.

"They belong to Ryan."

As if to prove his point, gunfire erupted inside the house.

Not aimed to kill.

Warning shots.

Glass shattered upstairs.

Someone shouted, "Search every room!"

Victor looked back at Claire.

"You have thirty seconds."

Emma whispered, "Claire... who is this man?"

"I don't know anymore."

Inside the SUV...

Captain Brooks tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

He wasn't supposed to interfere.

Victor had been very clear.

"If she trusts me, we have a chance."

"If she doesn't..."

"The operation ends tonight."

Brooks had spent thirty years rescuing people at sea.

He knew fear.

He knew guilt.

What he saw in Claire's eyes was something else.

Calculation.

She wasn't panicking.

She was building a plan.

Just like her father had.

Claire suddenly grabbed Emma's wrist.

"Run."

Emma stared.

"What?"

"Now!"

Instead of running toward Victor...

Claire sprinted in the opposite direction.

Straight toward the narrow alley beside the house.

Emma followed without asking another question.

Victor sighed.

"I knew she'd do that."

He didn't chase.

Instead, he calmly spoke into the radio hidden beneath his jacket.

"Phase Two."

The armed men immediately changed direction.

"She's in the alley!"

Flashlights cut through the rain.

Boots pounded against wet concrete.

Claire's lungs burned.

Her body had recovered from the ocean, but only barely.

Emma struggled to keep up.

"Claire... I can't..."

"You have to."

They reached a chain-link fence nearly three meters high.

Emma looked around desperately.

"There isn't another way!"

Claire didn't answer.

She grabbed the fence and began climbing.

The metal rattled violently.

Halfway up, she slipped.

Her injured shoulder screamed with pain.

She almost fell.

Then a hand pushed her upward.

Emma.

"Go!"

Claire climbed over.

Dropped to the other side.

Then reached back to help Emma.

Behind them...

The first pursuer entered the alley.

"There!"

A flashlight locked onto them.

Claire pulled Emma over the fence just as bullets struck the metal links.

Sparks flew into the darkness.

They ran through abandoned warehouses near the harbor.

Rows of rusted shipping containers formed a maze.

Claire slowed.

"This way."

Emma grabbed her arm.

"How do you know?"

Claire pointed.

"Container numbers."

"What?"

"Ryan's files."

She remembered them.

The coded shipping routes.

The numbering system.

This wasn't just any warehouse district.

It belonged to Black Tide.

If she remembered correctly...

Container B-17 connected to an underground maintenance tunnel.

They rounded another corner.

There it was.

B-17.

Still standing exactly where it should.

Claire smiled for the first time in days.

"Found it."

She searched beneath the container.

Nothing.

No hatch.

No tunnel.

Only wet concrete.

Emma looked at her.

"Claire..."

"I know."

Claire knelt lower.

Something had changed.

Or...

She had remembered incorrectly.

The footsteps behind them grew louder.

Flashlights bounced closer.

Emma whispered, "They're almost here."

Claire looked again.

Then noticed something strange.

One corner of the container rested slightly higher than the others.

A hydraulic jack.

She crawled beneath it.

Hidden under layers of mud...

A steel handle.

She pulled.

The concrete beside the container slid sideways with a deep grinding sound.

A tunnel.

Emma stared.

"How did you..."

"No time."

They climbed inside.

The entrance closed behind them.

Darkness swallowed everything.

Outside...

Ryan's men reached Container B-17.

Empty.

The leader frowned.

"They vanished."

One of the others examined the muddy ground.

"No footprints leaving."

He slowly looked at the container.

"They're underneath."

The tunnel smelled of saltwater and oil.

Emergency lights flickered every few meters.

Claire led the way.

Emma stayed close.

"Where does this go?"

"I don't know."

"You just said..."

"I know this place exists."

"I've never been inside."

Emma swallowed hard.

"That's... not comforting."

Claire almost smiled.

Almost.

After nearly ten minutes, the tunnel split into two paths.

Left.

Right.

No signs.

No markings.

Claire closed her eyes.

Think.

Ryan had once argued with Jason.

"The eastern exit isn't safe anymore."

Eastern exit.

If the harbor lay west...

Then east...

She pointed right.

"That way."

At the same moment...

Victor entered the warehouse.

His men surrounded him.

"They escaped underground."

"I know."

"Should we follow?"

Victor looked toward the tunnel entrance.

"No."

The man blinked.

"But we'll lose them."

Victor smiled faintly.

"They're not escaping."

"They're heading exactly where I wanted them."

Twenty minutes later...

Claire and Emma reached a steel door.

Locked from the outside.

Claire pushed.

Nothing.

Emma leaned against the wall, exhausted.

"We're trapped."

Then...

A mechanical click echoed.

The door slowly opened inward.

Standing on the other side...

Captain Elias Brooks.

Alone.

He held no weapon.

Only a flashlight.

Claire immediately stepped back.

"You lied to me."

Brooks nodded.

"Yes."

"You work for Victor."

"Yes."

"You brought him to me."

"...Yes."

Emma whispered, "Claire..."

Brooks raised both hands.

"I'm not here to take you back."

Claire's voice hardened.

"Then why are you here?"

Brooks looked directly into her eyes.

"Because your father once saved my life."

Silence.

"He made me promise something."

Claire felt her heart skip.

"What promise?"

"If anything ever happened to him..."

"...I had to protect his daughter."

Claire searched his face for any sign of deception.

She found only exhaustion.

Regret.

And something else.

Fear.

Brooks reached into his coat.

Claire instantly tensed.

He slowly removed...

A weathered leather notebook.

"I've kept this for ten years."

He handed it to her.

"It belonged to Nathan."

Claire took it with trembling hands.

On the cover were three faded initials.

N.M.

Her father's.

She opened the first page.

Only one sentence was written there.

"If Claire is reading this..."

"...then I failed."

Tears blurred her vision.

Brooks spoke quietly.

"You don't have much time."

"What do you mean?"

"Ryan already knows where this tunnel leads."

Claire looked up sharply.

"How?"

Brooks didn't answer.

Instead, he turned his flashlight toward the darkness behind them.

Several tiny red dots appeared on the tunnel wall.

Laser sights.

One.

Three.

Five.

Then dozens.

A calm voice echoed through the tunnel.

"So..."

Ryan stepped into the light, a pistol resting casually in his hand.

"...the whole family reunion is finally complete."

Jason emerged beside him.

Smiling.

Ryan looked at Claire with the same cold expression he had worn on the yacht.

"I have to admit..."

"You survived much longer than I expected."

He slowly raised the pistol.

"But this story..."

May you like

"...ends underground."
