Chapter 12: Prison Ship 13

The black ship drifted silently through the burning sea.

No navigation lights.

No national flag.

No company name.

Only a weathered white number painted across its bow.

13.

The flames from the surrounding battle reflected across its steel hull, but the vessel itself remained untouched.

It moved with eerie calm, as if the war around it meant nothing.

Claire couldn't take her eyes off it.

"Dad..."

Ryan's face lost all color.

"I've heard stories."

Captain Brooks whispered,

"I thought they were myths."

Emma frowned.

"What is it?"

Victor answered through the emergency radio, his voice broken by static.

"Ship Thirteen..."

"...doesn't officially exist."

Another missile exploded nearby.

The shockwave rocked the Acheron.

Sophia fought to keep the ship steady.

"The battle's pushing us toward it!"

Adrian grabbed the wheel beside her.

"Turn south."

"It won't answer."

The rudder refused to move.

Captain Brooks rushed into the engine room.

Seconds later, his voice echoed through the intercom.

"The steering system's offline!"

Ryan swore.

"They've hacked us."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"No."

"They've taken control."

Claire looked toward Prison Ship 13.

Something was wrong.

It wasn't moving toward them.

The sea itself seemed to be carrying every nearby vessel toward it.

The burning warships.

Floating wreckage.

Lifeboats.

Even the Acheron.

Emma whispered,

"That's impossible."

Captain Brooks returned, breathing hard.

"The current..."

"There isn't one."

Claire frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"The water isn't pulling us."

He pointed toward the giant black vessel.

"It is."

Sophia stared at the navigation display.

Every compass spun wildly.

GPS signal lost.

Radar blank.

Only one object still appeared on the screen.

13

Nothing else existed.

Ryan spoke quietly.

"Your father warned me about this."

Claire turned sharply.

"When?"

"The night before he disappeared."

Ryan's memory returned with painful clarity.

Eleven years earlier...

Nathan Mercer had stood alone on a moonlit dock, holding a folded map.

He had looked older than his years.

Exhausted.

Afraid.

"If they ever activate Ship Thirteen..."

Nathan had said...

"...run."

Ryan had laughed.

"It can't be that dangerous."

Nathan's answer had haunted him ever since.

"It isn't dangerous because of what's on board."

"It's dangerous because of what it protects."

The memory faded.

Claire's heart raced.

"What does it protect?"

Ryan slowly shook his head.

"He never told me."

The Acheron drifted closer.

Now Claire could see details.

No windows.

No lifeboats.

No visible crew.

Just endless black steel.

Then...

A loud metallic clang echoed across the water.

One of the giant side doors slowly opened.

White light poured into the darkness.

A voice echoed through hidden speakers.

"Claire Mercer."

It wasn't Charles.

Not Victor.

Not Adrian.

It was Nathan.

Older.

Weaker.

But unmistakably her father.

"Don't come aboard."

Claire stepped forward instinctively.

"Dad!"

"I mean it!"

His voice cracked.

"You have to leave!"

Ryan grabbed Claire's arm before she could jump.

Then another voice interrupted.

Smooth.

Elegant.

Cold.

"She can't leave."

A man stepped into the light inside the open cargo bay.

He wore a perfectly tailored white suit.

Not a wrinkle.

Not a stain.

Silver hair.

Blue eyes.

Perhaps sixty years old.

He smiled politely.

"Good evening."

Adrian's face turned pale.

"No..."

Victor's voice exploded over the radio.

"Everyone retreat!"

Even Charles Whitmore shouted from somewhere across the battlefield.

"Fire everything!"

Missiles immediately changed direction.

Not toward the Acheron.

Toward Ship 13.

The man in white simply watched.

Then he lifted one hand.

Every missile...

Stopped.

In midair.

Hovering.

Emma gasped.

"What..."

One by one, the missiles lost power and fell harmlessly into the sea.

Captain Brooks whispered,

"Electronic warfare..."

Ryan corrected him.

"No."

"This is something else."

The man smiled.

"My name..."

He paused deliberately.

"...is Alexander."

Claire frowned.

"Who are you?"

He answered without hesitation.

"I built Black Tide."

Victor shouted over the radio.

"He's lying!"

Alexander chuckled.

"No."

"I built the organization."

"I simply allowed others to believe they controlled it."

Charles Whitmore fell silent.

For the first time...

The leader of the Council looked frightened.

Alexander looked directly at Claire.

"You've inherited Nathan's courage."

Then he looked at Ryan.

"You've inherited only his mistakes."

Ryan's jaw tightened.

"What do you want?"

Alexander answered with absolute calm.

"The same thing I wanted thirty years ago."

"Nathan."

Claire's pulse quickened.

"My father?"

Alexander nodded.

"He owes me one final design."

Adrian whispered,

"No..."

Claire turned.

"What design?"

Adrian closed his eyes.

"The Atlas Network."

Alexander smiled.

"So..."

"You remember."

Emma looked around in confusion.

"Can someone tell me what's happening?"

Captain Brooks answered.

"Every cargo route."

"Every port."

"Every satellite."

"Every customs database."

"Every shipping company."

Nathan had secretly built a single integrated global system capable of tracking every commercial vessel on Earth.

Claire stared.

"My father built that?"

Alexander nodded proudly.

"He almost finished."

"Then he refused to complete it."

Claire understood.

"If someone controlled that system..."

Alexander finished the thought.

"...they would control global trade."

Suddenly...

Nathan's voice echoed again from inside Ship 13.

"Claire!"

She looked up.

For a brief moment, she saw him behind reinforced glass.

Thin.

Gray-haired.

Alive.

He slammed one hand against the window.

"Listen carefully!"

Alexander didn't stop him.

Nathan shouted with every bit of strength he had left.

"The Atlas Network..."

"...was never finished!"

Claire frowned.

"What?"

Nathan smiled.

A tired...

Proud...

Father's smile.

"I lied."

Alexander's expression froze.

Nathan laughed for the first time in years.

"I never built the final key."

Silence.

Alexander slowly turned toward him.

"What did you say?"

Nathan repeated it.

"The Atlas Network can't be activated."

"Because..."

"...the final encryption key doesn't exist."

For the first time since anyone had met him...

Alexander's smile disappeared.

The sea fell silent.

Then Alexander quietly asked the question that changed everything.

"If there is no key..."

"...then what has Claire been wearing around her neck since she was twelve years old?"

Claire instinctively reached for the silver necklace beneath her shirt.

The same necklace.

The one that had hidden the waterproof USB.

The one Nathan had given her on her twelfth birthday.

She had worn it almost every day since.

Alexander smiled once more.

Not warmly.

Hungrily.

"It was never a birthday gift."

May you like

"It was the key."
