CHAPTER 9 – The Sister Hidden in the Shadows

The word echoed through the burning basement.
"Your sister."
Nobody spoke.
The fire crackled around them.
The smell of smoke filled the air.
But Elena heard nothing except those two words.
Her sister.
A person she never knew existed.
A person who had been erased from her life.
A person whose existence had been hidden for decades.
Elena looked at Alexander.
"You knew?"
The old man said nothing.
That silence was an answer.
Her voice became sharper.
"You knew I had a sister?"
Alexander looked at the photograph in Ruiz's hand.
"Yes."
"Where is she?"
Another silence.
Elena stepped forward.
"Where is she?"
This time, Alexander looked directly at her.
"She is the reason your life was changed."
Thomas immediately grabbed the side of Alexander's wheelchair.
"Where is my other daughter?"
The room froze.
Elena turned toward him.
"Other daughter?"
Thomas closed his eyes.
Realization crossed his face.
"Alexander..."
"You thought only Elena survived?"
Alexander smiled faintly.
"You were wrong."
Twenty-eight years earlier...
Thomas Vale stood in a hospital hallway.
Two nurses walked past him carrying newborn babies.
Two.
Not one.
He remembered that night.
He remembered Isabella crying.
He remembered Alexander arriving.
He remembered the argument.
But he had never known the truth.
There were two children.
Two daughters.
Two heirs.
Present day.
Ruiz looked at Alexander.
"Who is the girl?"
Alexander ignored him.
Instead, he looked at Elena.
"Do you know why you were chosen?"
Elena's expression hardened.
"I wasn't chosen."
"No."
Alexander smiled.
"You were spared."
The words sent a chill through the room.
The fire department arrived quickly.
The basement was sealed.
The remaining evidence was taken.
But the most important thing was gone.
The files.
The records.
The names.
Someone had destroyed them before the police could recover everything.
Someone who knew exactly what they were doing.
Inside the mansion library...
Everyone gathered.
For the first time, there were no lies.
Only people who had spent years hiding from the same monster.
Elena stood by the window.
Adrian approached carefully.
"Elena."
She didn't turn.
"I don't know who I am anymore."
His expression broke.
"You are the woman I love."
She laughed quietly.
"Do you even know me?"
Adrian had no answer.
Vanessa sat across the room.
For once, she looked exhausted.
Not dangerous.
Not confident.
Just tired.
Elena looked at her.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Vanessa looked up.
"About what?"
"About Alexander."
A bitter smile appeared.
"Because you wouldn't have believed me."
"Maybe."
Vanessa nodded.
"I know."
She looked down.
"Because I didn't believe myself either."
Ruiz entered with a folder.
"We found something."
Everyone turned.
He placed several documents on the table.
"Before the basement burned, one camera captured the person who started the fire."
Elena frowned.
"Who?"
Ruiz hesitated.
Then showed the image.
Everyone froze.
The person in the footage was wearing a hood.
But the face was visible.
Only for a second.
Long enough.
Elena stared.
"No..."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Who is that?"
Elena whispered:
"I don't know."
But Thomas looked terrified.
Because he recognized the face.
"Thomas?"
Ruiz noticed.
"You know her?"
Thomas didn't answer.
His hands were shaking.
Finally, he whispered:
"Her name is Clara."
Elena looked confused.
"Who is Clara?"
Thomas looked at her.
"Your sister."
The room went silent.
"Impossible."
Thomas shook his head slowly.
"I thought she was dead."
Vanessa stood up.
"Wait."
Everyone looked at her.
"That means..."
She pointed toward the photograph.
"The first daughter lived."
She looked at Elena.
"But she wasn't hiding."
A pause.
"She was watching."
That night...
A woman stood on the rooftop of an abandoned building overlooking the city.
She removed the hood.
Long dark hair fell over her shoulders.
The same eyes.
The same face.
The same scar.
Clara Vale.
Elena's twin sister.
She held an old photograph.
One of two babies.
She whispered:
"I waited twenty-eight years."
Her phone rang.
She answered.
A distorted voice spoke.
"Is the first phase complete?"
Clara looked toward Howard Manor.
"Yes."
"And Elena?"
A small smile appeared.
"She knows I exist."
"What now?"
Clara looked at the photograph.
"Now she learns why I disappeared."
The next morning...
Elena received a package.
No sender.
No address.
Inside was a small diary.
The cover was worn.
The first page had a name.
Isabella Carter.
Elena's hands trembled.
Her mother's diary.
Impossible.
She opened it.
The first entry was dated twenty-eight years ago.
"Today, I gave birth to two daughters."
Elena stopped breathing.
She continued reading.
"Alexander believes he can control them."
"He believes one child can inherit the Howard empire."
"But he doesn't know the truth."
The next page was torn.
Only one sentence remained:
"The daughter Alexander fears is not Elena."
Elena turned the page.
A photograph fell out.
A photograph of Clara.
Written beneath it:
"My first daughter. The one who knows what I did."
Elena's phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A woman's voice.
Calm.
Familiar.
"You found the diary."
Elena froze.
"Clara?"
A pause.
"Hello, little sister."
Elena's grip tightened.
"Why did you burn the basement?"
Silence.
Then Clara answered:
"Because I wanted you to stop looking for the truth."
Elena's heart raced.
"Why?"
Clara's voice became colder.
"Because the truth will make you hate me."
The call ended.
At that exact moment...
A message arrived.
One photo.
A picture of Clara standing beside Isabella.
Both alive.
Both smiling.
The date on the photo was yesterday.
Elena stared.
Her mother wasn't just alive.
She had been with Clara the entire time.
Then another message appeared.
Three words.
"Ask your mother."
Elena slowly looked up.
Because suddenly she understood.
The biggest secret wasn't that her sister survived.
The biggest secret was...
May you like
Her mother had known where Clara was all along.
