CHAPTER 11 – The Name That Was Erased

The church fell silent.

Not peaceful silence.

The kind of silence that comes before a storm breaks.

Elena held the phone tightly against her ear.

Ruiz's words repeated inside her mind.

"Alexander Howard is not a Howard."

A simple sentence.

But it shattered the foundation of everything she knew.

The Howard name.

The empire.

The family history.

The fortune.

All of it.

A carefully constructed illusion.

"Ruiz."

Her voice was barely audible.

"What do you mean he's not a Howard?"

On the other end of the line, papers shuffled.

"We searched old government records."

"And?"

"Alexander Howard was born under a different name."

Elena looked at Clara.

Her sister was staring at the floor.

Not surprised.

Almost like she had been waiting for this moment.

"His real name?"

Ruiz hesitated.

Then answered:

"Marcus Vane."

The name meant nothing to Elena.

But Clara reacted instantly.

Her face turned pale.

"No..."

Elena looked at her.

"You know that name."

Clara slowly nodded.

"Yes."

"Who is Marcus Vane?"

Clara looked toward Isabella.

Her mother closed her eyes.

Because she knew the truth was finally coming out.

"Before Alexander Howard existed..."

Clara whispered.

"There was Marcus Vane."

She walked toward the old church window.

"He was not born wealthy."

"He was not born powerful."

"He was someone who wanted everything he couldn't have."

Elena listened.

"And he found the Howard family."

Thirty years earlier...

Marcus Vane was a young financial advisor.

Brilliant.

Ambitious.

Ruthless.

He entered the Howard empire as an outsider.

Everyone underestimated him.

They saw a poor man trying to climb into a world that wasn't his.

But Marcus understood something.

Money was not the real source of power.

Information was.

Secrets were.

And the Howard family had thousands.

Marcus discovered the truth.

The Howard fortune had originally belonged to a woman named Eleanor Howard.

The founder's daughter.

A woman erased from history.

A woman whose descendants were supposed to inherit everything.

But decades earlier...

The family changed the records.

They removed names.

They rewrote history.

They created a new version of the Howard legacy.

And Marcus discovered the missing piece.

Present day.

"He wasn't protecting the Howard name."

Clara said quietly.

"He was stealing it."

Elena looked confused.

"Then why call himself Howard?"

Isabella answered.

"Because he believed if he wore the name long enough..."

She looked at Elena.

"He would become the name."

At Howard Manor...

Alexander sat alone.

The room was dark.

He held an old photograph.

A young man.

A different face.

A different identity.

Marcus Vane.

He looked at the photograph.

"You were always too curious."

He spoke to the empty room.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

"Yes?"

A voice replied.

"She knows."

Alexander closed his eyes.

"Elena?"

"All of them."

A pause.

"Thomas's recording."

Alexander's expression remained calm.

But his hand tightened around the phone.

"Then we move faster."

Adrian entered the room.

"You knew this day would come."

Alexander looked up.

"Yes."

"You knew Elena would discover everything."

"Yes."

Adrian stared at him.

"Then why?"

Alexander smiled.

"Because secrets are only dangerous while they remain hidden."

He placed the photograph down.

"When people finally learn the truth..."

A pause.

"They become desperate."

Back at the church...

Elena looked at Isabella.

"I need to know everything."

Isabella nodded.

"You deserve that."

She opened another box.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Letters.

Photographs.

Records.

But one thing caught Elena's attention.

A sealed envelope.

Her name was written on it.

For Elena.

Her hands trembled.

"Who wrote this?"

Isabella looked away.

"Your father."

Elena opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Thomas's handwriting.

The first line immediately made her cry.

My dear Elena,

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.

She continued.

But I need you to know something.

Your mother and I never abandoned you.

We were fighting to give you a future.

Her vision blurred.

She wiped her eyes and kept reading.

There is one truth Alexander never discovered.

The inheritance document he searched for was never hidden.

Elena stopped.

She read the sentence again.

It was never hidden.

The next line.

It was given to someone Alexander trusted most.

Clara leaned closer.

"What?"

Elena turned the page.

The final sentence was written in darker ink.

The document is with the person who helped destroy me.

Below it...

A name.

Elena's face changed.

Clara noticed.

"Who?"

Elena slowly looked up.

Her voice shook.

"Vanessa."

Everyone froze.

"Vanessa?"

Clara frowned.

"Impossible."

Elena handed her the letter.

Clara read it.

Her expression changed.

"No..."

Isabella whispered:

"What?"

Clara looked terrified.

"Alexander didn't choose Vanessa because she was useful."

A pause.

"He chose her because..."

She looked at Elena.

"Because she was the only person who could access the inheritance."

At that exact moment...

Vanessa sat inside a police vehicle outside Howard Manor.

She stared at the city lights.

A detective beside her asked:

"Why did you never tell us about the document?"

Vanessa smiled faintly.

"Because nobody asked the right question."

The detective frowned.

"What question?"

Vanessa looked out the window.

"Who gave it to me?"

The car stopped.

The detective turned.

"We're here."

Vanessa didn't move.

"You should let me go."

The detective laughed.

"After everything?"

Vanessa looked at him.

"You still think I'm the criminal."

A pause.

"That's because you don't know who I was protecting."

Suddenly...

A motorcycle stopped outside.

A man wearing a helmet approached.

The officers reached for their weapons.

The man removed his helmet.

Everyone froze.

Because he was someone impossible.

Someone who should not exist.

Someone who had disappeared twenty years ago.

Vanessa stood up slowly.

"No..."

The man looked at her.

"I'm sorry it took so long."

Vanessa whispered:

"Father?"

At the church...

Elena's phone received a final message.

A photograph.

Vanessa.

Standing beside the mysterious man.

The caption:

"Ask Vanessa why she betrayed her own family."

Elena stared.

Another secret.

Another hidden connection.

Another person who wasn't who they seemed.

And for the first time...

Elena realized something terrifying.

Everyone had been lying.

But maybe...

May you like

Not everyone was lying for the same reason.
