CHAPTER 5 – The Man Behind The Locked Door

The footsteps stopped outside Elena's hospital room.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
For several seconds, the only sound was the rain hitting the window.
Detective Ruiz stood in front of Elena, his hand still resting on his weapon.
"Stay behind me."
Elena didn't answer.
Her eyes remained fixed on the door.
Because something inside her was telling her a truth her mind refused to accept.
Whoever was standing outside...
Was not a stranger.
The door handle slowly turned.
Click.
Click.
Click.
Then...
The door opened.
A man stepped inside.
He was older.
His hair was silver.
His face carried the marks of years spent running, hiding, and surviving.
But his eyes...
Those eyes were exactly the same as hers.
Elena forgot how to breathe.
The man looked at her.
Not like a criminal.
Not like an enemy.
Like someone who had spent a lifetime searching for a missing piece of himself.
"Elena."
Her name left his mouth like a prayer.
Ruiz immediately raised his weapon.
"Don't move."
The man stopped.
"I expected that."
Ruiz narrowed his eyes.
"Thomas Vale."
The man's expression changed slightly.
A mixture of sadness and exhaustion.
"So they still use that name."
Elena stared.
"You are him."
Thomas looked at her.
"Yes."
A thousand questions rushed through her mind.
But only one escaped.
"Why?"
The word came out broken.
"Why did you leave me?"
Thomas closed his eyes.
And for the first time...
The man everyone feared looked completely defeated.
"Because someone made sure I believed you were dead."
Ruiz lowered his weapon slightly.
"Explain."
Thomas glanced toward the hallway.
"Not here."
"You're in a hospital surrounded by police."
"No."
Thomas looked at the ceiling.
"You're in a hospital where half the cameras are fake, the security system is compromised, and someone has been listening to this conversation since I entered."
Ruiz immediately looked upward.
"What?"
Thomas shook his head.
"You still don't understand the enemy."
Suddenly...
Every light in the hospital flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then the television screen turned on.
A black screen.
No signal.
Then a message appeared.
YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED DEAD, THOMAS.
Elena stepped backward.
Ruiz looked at Thomas.
"Who sent that?"
Thomas didn't answer.
Because he already knew.
His face became pale.
"Alexander."
The name felt like a weapon.
Elena frowned.
"Alexander Howard?"
Thomas nodded.
"Your grandfather."
Her expression changed.
"My grandfather?"
Thomas looked at her.
"Yes."
The room went silent.
Elena's hand moved instinctively to her stomach.
All her life...
She believed she was Elena Carter.
A woman with ordinary parents.
An ordinary childhood.
An ordinary past.
Now...
Every person around her seemed connected to a family she never knew existed.
Thomas sat down slowly.
"I need to tell you everything."
Ruiz remained standing.
"You have ten minutes."
Thomas gave a bitter smile.
"Then I'll start with the part nobody knows."
He looked at Elena.
"You were never kidnapped."
Elena frowned.
"What?"
"You were hidden."
"By who?"
Thomas looked toward the window.
"By your mother."
The answer shocked her.
"My mother?"
Thomas nodded.
"She knew what the Howard family was capable of."
He swallowed.
"She knew Alexander would do anything to protect his empire."
Elena's voice trembled.
"Then why doesn't she appear in any records?"
Thomas looked away.
"Because she died protecting you."
Elena felt like the room was spinning.
"No."
Thomas reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
"I kept this for twenty-eight years."
He handed it to her.
Inside was a letter.
The paper was old.
The handwriting was delicate.
Elena unfolded it.
Only one sentence was written.
"If my daughter ever finds this, tell her I chose her over everything."
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
She didn't know this woman.
She had no memories of her.
Yet those words hurt more than anything.
Ruiz looked at Thomas.
"Why come back now?"
Thomas became silent.
Then he answered:
"Because Alexander is dying."
Elena looked up.
"What?"
"His illness has become worse."
Thomas continued.
"And before he dies, he wants to erase the last evidence that can destroy him."
"What evidence?"
Thomas looked at Elena.
"You."
A cold feeling moved through her.
"Me?"
Thomas nodded.
"Your existence proves everything."
"What?"
"The Howard fortune wasn't built by Alexander alone."
He looked toward the door.
"Your mother discovered that Alexander had been stealing from the company for years."
Ruiz frowned.
"How much?"
Thomas answered quietly.
"Billions."
Elena stared.
"And my mother knew?"
"She tried to expose him."
Thomas's voice became darker.
"That's why she disappeared."
Suddenly, Ruiz's phone rang.
He answered.
A detective's voice came through.
"Detective Ruiz, you need to return to Howard Manor immediately."
"Why?"
A pause.
Then:
"Mrs. Howard confessed."
Ruiz's expression changed.
"What did she confess?"
The voice on the phone lowered.
"She admitted she helped cover up Elena's identity."
Everyone became silent.
Then came the final sentence.
"And she says Vanessa Howard is not the villain."
Ruiz looked at Elena.
"What?"
The detective continued:
"She says Vanessa was trying to protect Elena."
Nobody spoke.
Because the impossible had happened.
The woman who pushed Elena down the staircase...
Might have been trying to save her.
Back at Howard Manor...
Vanessa sat alone in the interrogation room.
A police officer entered.
"You have a visitor."
She looked up.
"Who?"
The officer stepped aside.
A woman walked in.
Older.
Elegant.
Someone Vanessa had not seen in years.
Vanessa's face immediately changed.
"No..."
The woman smiled.
"Hello, Vanessa."
"You died."
The woman placed a folder on the table.
"No."
She leaned closer.
"But everyone needed to believe I did."
Vanessa stared.
Because the woman sitting across from her...
Was Elena's mother.
May you like
The woman who was supposed to have died twenty-eight years ago.
