CHAPTER 3 – The Woman Behind The Curtain

The hospital room was quiet.
Too quiet.
Elena hated quiet rooms.
Quiet rooms gave secrets a place to breathe.
She sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the unknown message glowing on her phone.
"You were never his target, Elena."
"You were his bait."
Two sentences.
Twelve words.
Yet they carried more weight than an entire confession.
For months, Elena believed she was hunting Vanessa.
She believed she was exposing a greedy woman who wanted the Howard fortune.
She believed she was one step ahead.
But now...
A terrifying thought entered her mind.
What if Vanessa wasn't the predator?
What if Vanessa was running from something much bigger?
The door opened.
Detective Gabriel Ruiz walked in carrying a thin folder.
His expression was different.
Not the calm confidence he had shown at the mansion.
This was concern.
Real concern.
"How's the baby?"
Elena placed a hand over her stomach.
"The doctor says everything is stable."
Ruiz nodded.
"Good."
He sat down across from her.
"Because we may have a bigger problem."
Elena gave a bitter smile.
"I already figured that out."
Ruiz placed the folder on the table.
Inside were photographs.
Old photographs.
One showed Thomas Vale entering Howard Manor.
Another showed him meeting with company executives.
Another showed him standing beside a young Alexander Howard.
Elena stared.
"Alexander knew him."
Ruiz nodded.
"More than knew him."
He flipped another page.
"Thomas Vale was not just your husband's employee."
A pause.
"He was Alexander's half-brother."
Elena froze.
"What?"
Ruiz leaned forward.
"The Howard family covered it up twenty-five years ago."
He pointed at the documents.
"Thomas was born before Alexander's father married his official wife. When the truth threatened the family reputation, they paid Thomas's mother to disappear."
Elena slowly looked at the pictures again.
"So Vanessa..."
"Is connected to him."
Ruiz nodded.
"Yes."
The pieces began moving.
Not fitting.
Moving.
Like a puzzle designed by someone who wanted the picture to remain hidden.
Back at Howard Manor...
Vanessa sat alone in the interrogation room.
She wasn't crying anymore.
The performance was over.
She stared through the glass window.
Waiting.
A detective entered.
"Mrs. Howard."
Vanessa looked up.
"Finally."
The detective placed a recorder on the table.
"We need your statement."
Vanessa smiled.
"My statement?"
She leaned back.
"You already decided I was guilty."
The detective remained silent.
Vanessa looked at the glass.
She knew Ruiz was watching.
"Detective Ruiz."
A speaker clicked.
Ruiz's voice came through.
"Yes?"
Vanessa smiled.
"I know you're listening."
No answer.
She continued.
"You think you caught me."
Silence.
"But you don't know what game you're playing."
Ruiz entered the room.
"You pushed a pregnant woman down the stairs."
Vanessa looked directly at him.
"No."
Her voice became cold.
"I saved her life."
Ruiz frowned.
"What?"
Vanessa leaned forward.
"You really think I wanted Elena dead?"
She laughed quietly.
"You don't understand anything."
Ruiz studied her.
"Then explain."
Vanessa looked toward the ceiling camera.
"Not here."
"Why?"
"Because someone else is watching."
Ruiz glanced at the camera.
"That's a police recording system."
Vanessa shook her head.
"No."
Her eyes narrowed.
"You still haven't learned."
A chill moved through the room.
"The cameras in this house weren't installed to watch me."
Ruiz stared.
"Then who?"
Vanessa whispered:
"Everyone."
Three hours earlier...
Before the fall.
Before the police arrived.
Before the entire mansion changed forever.
Elena had been walking down the hallway when she heard voices.
Vanessa.
And someone else.
She stopped near the library door.
"You promised me this would be clean."
Vanessa sounded angry.
A man's voice replied.
"Nothing involving the Howards is clean."
Elena froze.
She knew that voice.
Thomas Vale.
Alive.
"You were supposed to disappear," Vanessa said.
"I did."
"Then why are you here?"
A pause.
"Because Elena discovered the truth."
Elena's heartbeat increased.
The truth?
About what?
Thomas continued.
"She found the account records."
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"She doesn't know everything."
"She knows enough."
Elena quietly stepped back.
But a floorboard creaked.
The voices stopped.
She barely had time to move before Vanessa opened the door.
Their eyes met.
For a second...
Both women understood.
The other knew.
Vanessa wasn't surprised.
Instead...
She smiled.
"You heard everything."
Elena didn't answer.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Do you know what happens to people who discover Howard family secrets?"
Elena held her ground.
"Are you threatening me?"
"No."
Vanessa looked strangely sad.
"I'm warning you."
Then she whispered:
"You're not fighting me."
A pause.
"You're fighting someone who doesn't exist."
Present day.
Ruiz stared at Vanessa.
"Who is watching us?"
Vanessa didn't answer.
Instead, she reached into her pocket.
The detective immediately moved.
"Slowly."
Vanessa pulled out a small piece of paper.
She placed it on the table.
Ruiz unfolded it.
His expression changed instantly.
It was a list.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
At the top...
A title.
HOWARD FAMILY PROTECTION PROGRAM
Ruiz looked up.
"Where did you get this?"
Vanessa smiled.
"From Thomas."
"Where is he now?"
Her smile disappeared.
"That's the problem."
She looked toward the door.
"He's been dead for six years."
Ruiz frowned.
"That doesn't make sense."
Vanessa whispered:
"Exactly."
At the same moment...
In the hospital parking lot...
A man sat inside a black sedan.
Watching Elena's room.
He held a photograph.
A photograph of Elena.
But it wasn't recent.
It was taken fifteen years ago.
When she was a child.
The man traced the picture with his finger.
"After all these years..."
He smiled.
"You finally came back."
His phone rang.
He answered.
A distorted voice spoke.
"Is she alive?"
The man looked toward the hospital.
"Yes."
"Good."
A pause.
"Then phase two begins."
The man smiled.
"Finally."
He ended the call.
And beneath the photograph of young Elena...
Was another picture.
A picture of a woman Elena had never met.
May you like
But whose face looked exactly like hers.
