CHAPTER 6 – The Mother Who Returned From The Grave

Vanessa couldn't move.
For the first time in years...
For the first time since she learned how to manipulate people, control conversations, and hide behind carefully designed lies...
She had no words.
The woman sitting across from her shouldn't exist.
Everyone knew that.
The world knew that.
The records knew that.
Isabella Carter was dead.
A tragic accident.
A destroyed vehicle.
A body never properly identified.
A closed investigation.
A forgotten name.
Except...
Vanessa had always known something was wrong.
Because dead people did not leave behind warnings.
And Isabella had left many.
The woman placed the folder on the table.
Vanessa stared at it.
"What is this?"
Isabella smiled faintly.
"The truth."
Vanessa didn't touch it.
"You disappeared."
"Yes."
"You let your daughter believe she was alone."
Pain crossed Isabella's face.
"That was the hardest thing I have ever done."
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Harder than pretending to be dead?"
Isabella looked directly at her.
"Harder than watching my own child grow up without knowing me."
The room became silent.
At the hospital...
Elena couldn't stop staring at Thomas.
"My mother is alive?"
Thomas nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"Where is she?"
He hesitated.
That hesitation told Elena everything.
"You know."
Thomas looked down.
"I know where she was."
Her voice became sharper.
"Was?"
Before Thomas could answer, Ruiz interrupted.
"Everyone needs to calm down."
Elena turned toward him.
"Calm down?"
Her eyes filled with anger.
"My entire life was a lie."
Ruiz remained quiet.
Because he knew she was right.
The investigation had changed.
This was no longer about Vanessa pushing Elena down the stairs.
This was about a family that had spent decades burying the truth.
Twenty-eight years earlier...
Isabella Carter stood in a dark parking garage.
She held a newborn baby in her arms.
Her hands shook.
Across from her stood Thomas.
"You have to take her."
Thomas looked horrified.
"What are you saying?"
"If Alexander finds out she exists..."
"He won't hurt his own granddaughter."
Isabella looked at him sadly.
"You don't know Alexander."
Thomas stepped closer.
"We can fight him."
"No."
Her voice broke.
"We can't fight a man who owns the police, the courts, and half the city."
She looked down at the baby.
"She deserves a life."
Thomas touched the baby's tiny hand.
"What about us?"
Isabella forced herself not to cry.
"Maybe one day."
That day never came.
Present day...
Vanessa opened the folder.
The first document inside made her freeze.
A bank transfer.
Millions of dollars.
From an account belonging to Alexander Howard.
To Thomas Vale.
Then another.
And another.
Vanessa looked up.
"What is this?"
Isabella answered calmly.
"Proof that Thomas wasn't trying to steal from Howard Industries."
She pointed to the documents.
"He was investigating Alexander."
Vanessa's eyes moved quickly across the pages.
"He knew?"
"Yes."
"Then why didn't he expose him?"
Isabella's expression darkened.
"Because Alexander exposed him first."
Vanessa turned another page.
A photograph fell out.
She picked it up.
Her hands trembled.
It showed Alexander Howard.
Standing beside someone.
Someone Vanessa recognized.
Her own father.
She looked confused.
"What is this?"
Isabella said quietly:
"The reason your family was destroyed."
Meanwhile...
Inside Howard Manor...
Detective Ruiz walked through the library.
The same room where everything began.
The hidden cameras.
The secret recordings.
The old documents.
Everything connected to the Howard family was stored here.
A detective approached.
"Sir."
Ruiz turned.
"We found something."
The detective handed him a small metal box.
"Hidden behind the wall."
Ruiz opened it.
Inside was a single object.
A cassette tape.
No label.
Only one word written on it.
ELENA.
They played it immediately.
Static filled the room.
Then...
A man's voice.
Alexander Howard.
Older.
Angry.
"If you're hearing this..."
Everyone froze.
The recording continued.
"Then something has gone wrong."
A pause.
"I never wanted Elena to know."
Ruiz looked at the others.
Know what?
The voice continued.
"She was never supposed to inherit anything."
Another pause.
"Because the Howard fortune was never mine."
Silence.
The detective looked confused.
"What does that mean?"
Ruiz didn't answer.
The recording continued.
"It belonged to her mother."
At the hospital...
Thomas suddenly received a message.
His face changed.
Elena noticed.
"What happened?"
He showed her the phone.
A photograph.
Vanessa.
Sitting in the interrogation room.
And beside her...
Isabella.
Elena stared.
Her mother.
Alive.
The message beneath the photo said:
"Your mother is not here to save you."
A second message appeared.
"She is here because she knows where the money is."
Thomas immediately stood.
"No."
Ruiz looked at him.
"What?"
Thomas's expression was filled with fear.
"Alexander found her."
At Howard Manor...
Isabella stood near the window.
Vanessa watched her carefully.
"You brought me here for a reason."
Isabella didn't answer.
"You need something from me."
Finally...
Isabella smiled.
"You're smarter than people think."
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"What do you want?"
Isabella walked closer.
"The one thing Alexander spent twenty-eight years searching for."
"What?"
Isabella whispered:
"The original Howard inheritance document."
Vanessa froze.
"The one proving Elena owns everything?"
Isabella nodded.
"Yes."
Vanessa looked toward the door.
"And if Alexander gets it?"
Isabella's face became serious.
"Then Elena dies before she ever learns the truth."
Suddenly...
The mansion lights went out.
Again.
The same darkness.
The same silence.
Then...
A slow clap echoed from the hallway.
Everyone turned.
A man's voice filled the room.
"Still protecting her after all these years, Isabella?"
Vanessa's blood ran cold.
Because she recognized that voice.
A voice she had heard only once.
A voice that belonged to the man controlling everything from the shadows.
Alexander Howard.
The lights returned.
Standing at the entrance...
Was an old man in a wheelchair.
Weak.
Sick.
But smiling.
Alexander Howard looked at Elena's mother.
Then at Vanessa.
Then finally...
At the camera hidden in the corner.
May you like
"I think it's time my granddaughter comes home."
