CHAPTER 8 – The Husband’s Confession

Nobody moved.
Not even Alexander.
For a brief moment, the old man's confident expression disappeared.
Only for a second.
But Ruiz noticed.
A man like Alexander Howard did not reveal emotions accidentally.
Which meant Adrian's arrival had changed the game.
Elena stared at her husband.
The man she had loved.
The man she believed was the only person in the Howard family who truly protected her.
The man who held her hand when she discovered she was pregnant.
The man who promised:
"No matter what happens, I will always choose you."
Now he stood in front of her.
Alive.
Terrified.
And apologizing.
Her voice came out quietly.
"Helped them find me?"
Adrian lowered his eyes.
"Elena..."
"No."
She shook her head.
"Answer me."
The entire room watched.
Even Vanessa.
Even Alexander.
Because everyone wanted to know the same thing.
What had Adrian Howard been hiding?
Adrian slowly walked forward.
"I didn't know the whole plan."
Elena laughed softly.
A painful sound.
"That's supposed to make me feel better?"
"No."
His voice cracked.
"It doesn't."
He looked at her.
"But you need to know something."
A pause.
"I never wanted any of this."
Thomas stepped between them.
"Then explain."
Adrian looked at him.
The two men stared at each other.
Half-brothers.
Enemies.
Family.
A relationship destroyed by decades of secrets.
Adrian sighed.
"My father found out about Elena before we married."
Elena froze.
"What?"
Adrian nodded.
"He knew exactly who you were."
The room became silent.
"You married me because of that?"
Elena's question was barely a whisper.
Adrian looked devastated.
"No."
He stepped closer.
"I married you because I loved you."
"But you knew."
"Yes."
"And you never told me."
Adrian looked away.
Because there was no defense.
No explanation.
Only guilt.
Years earlier...
Adrian sat in his father's office.
Alexander placed a file on the desk.
Inside was everything.
Elena's birth records.
Her connection to Thomas.
Her mother's disappearance.
Everything.
"She will enter this family eventually."
Young Adrian looked confused.
"Who?"
Alexander smiled.
"Your future wife."
Adrian stared.
"You planned that?"
"Of course."
Alexander poured himself a drink.
"The Howard family does not leave valuable pieces on the board."
Adrian felt sick.
"She's a person."
Alexander looked at him.
"She's an inheritance."
Present day.
Elena felt something inside her break.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just a quiet fracture.
Because the worst betrayal wasn't from Vanessa.
It wasn't from Alexander.
It was from the person she trusted most.
"You knew my entire life was fake."
Adrian whispered:
"Yes."
"And you stayed silent."
"Because he threatened you."
Elena frowned.
"What?"
Adrian looked toward Alexander.
"He threatened our child."
The room changed.
Everyone looked at Alexander.
For the first time...
The old man's expression became cold.
Not amused.
Not confident.
Angry.
Ruiz stepped forward.
"Threatened your unborn grandchild?"
Alexander smiled.
"You should be careful with accusations, Detective."
Ruiz didn't move.
"I have recordings."
Alexander's smile faded slightly.
"Do you?"
Ruiz looked toward the security monitors.
The footage from the mansion began playing.
Audio.
Clear.
Alexander's voice.
From months earlier.
"If Elena discovers the truth before the transfer is complete, the child will never inherit anything."
Then another recording.
"And if Adrian refuses to cooperate, accidents happen."
The room went silent.
Alexander looked at Ruiz.
"You recorded private conversations?"
Ruiz smiled.
"You made one mistake."
"What?"
"You thought everyone around you was loyal."
He glanced at Vanessa.
Then Adrian.
Then Isabella.
"Nobody was."
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at her.
A strange laugh.
Almost exhausted.
"You still don't understand."
Ruiz frowned.
"What?"
Vanessa looked at Alexander.
"You think you're the only one who planned ahead."
Alexander's eyes narrowed.
"What did you do?"
Vanessa reached into her jacket.
The officers immediately raised their weapons.
"Slowly."
She ignored them.
She pulled out a small memory card.
"I copied everything."
Alexander's face changed.
"What?"
"The accounts."
"The meetings."
"The threats."
"The recordings."
She smiled.
"Everything you thought only you controlled."
Alexander's calm disappeared.
Just slightly.
But enough.
"You don't know what you have."
Vanessa looked at him.
"Actually..."
She stepped closer.
"I know exactly what I have."
A pause.
"And I know what you're afraid of."
Elena watched Vanessa carefully.
The woman who pushed her down the stairs.
The woman she believed hated her.
Suddenly looked different.
Not innocent.
Not completely.
But not the monster everyone assumed.
"You weren't trying to kill me."
Vanessa looked at her.
"No."
Her voice was quiet.
"I was trying to scare you."
"Why?"
Vanessa looked toward Alexander.
"Because I found out what was under the basement."
Everyone became silent.
Ruiz asked:
"What was there?"
Vanessa's expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
"There were files."
"What kind of files?"
She looked at Elena.
"Children."
Elena frowned.
"What?"
Vanessa swallowed.
"Children connected to the Howard family."
The room became cold.
"Children who disappeared."
Thomas stepped forward.
"What are you saying?"
Vanessa looked at him.
"Your daughter wasn't the first."
Elena felt her heart stop.
Alexander's face became unreadable.
Vanessa continued:
"The Howard family has been hiding something for decades."
She looked at Elena.
"And you..."
A pause.
"You are the only one who survived."
Suddenly...
The mansion shook.
A loud explosion echoed from beneath the house.
Everyone froze.
Smoke began rising from the hallway leading to the basement.
Ruiz immediately shouted:
"Everyone move!"
Officers rushed toward the lower floor.
Then...
A scream came from below.
A detective.
"HELP!"
Ruiz ran down the stairs.
The others followed.
When they reached the hidden basement...
They found the room.
The room full of Elena's photographs.
But something had changed.
The walls were burning.
The files were disappearing into flames.
And in the center of the room...
A single photograph remained untouched.
Ruiz picked it up.
His face turned pale.
Because the photograph showed Elena as a child.
Standing beside another little girl.
A girl who looked exactly like her.
On the back of the photograph...
Four words were written:
"THE FIRST DAUGHTER LIVED."
Elena stared at the picture.
"Who is she?"
Nobody answered.
Then Alexander spoke from behind them.
His voice was quiet.
Almost afraid.
May you like
"Your sister."
