CHAPTER 9 The Door Beneath the House

The hospital room remained frozen in darkness.

Only the emergency lights continued glowing faintly.

Richard stood completely still.

The words from the speaker echoed inside his mind.

"Come home, little brother."

Not Richard Howard.

Not Mr. Howard.

Little brother.

A name from another life.

A life he had spent decades forgetting.

Elena watched him carefully.

She had seen Richard angry.

She had seen him afraid.

But she had never seen him look like this.

Like a man who had just opened a door inside his own memory and found something waiting on the other side.

"Richard..."

He didn't respond.

"Look at me."

Slowly, he turned.

"What did I do?"

Elena frowned.

"What?"

His voice cracked.

"What did Daniel mean?"

"What door?"

Elena reached for his hand.

But Richard pulled away.

"I need to know."

At that exact moment...

Across town, Detective Ruiz received an encrypted message.

No sender.

No location.

Only coordinates.

He entered them into his computer.

His expression changed.

The location was impossible.

It was the original Howard estate.

The property had been abandoned fifteen years ago.

Before Richard inherited the current mansion.

Ruiz grabbed his jacket.

"Find every file connected to that address."

His partner looked confused.

"Why?"

Ruiz stared at the screen.

"Because that is where Black Compass began."

Two hours later...

Richard, Elena, and Ruiz stood outside the abandoned estate.

The building looked like a forgotten ghost.

Broken windows.

Overgrown gardens.

A rusted gate hanging open.

Richard stared at the house.

His breathing became heavier.

"I've never been here."

Ruiz looked at him.

"Your memory says otherwise."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"I would remember a place like this."

Elena quietly replied:

"Not if someone made you forget."

They entered through the front doors.

Dust covered everything.

The furniture remained untouched.

Almost as if the family had left yesterday.

Richard walked through the hallway.

Each step created a hollow echo.

Then he stopped.

A painting hung on the wall.

A family portrait.

Richard.

Daniel.

Amelia.

Their parents.

He stared at Amelia's face.

"I remember this."

Elena looked at him.

"What?"

"The night this was painted."

He touched the frame.

"Amelia was crying."

"She hated this picture."

Ruiz frowned.

"Why?"

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"Because my father told her..."

"...it would be the last picture of our family."

They reached the old basement entrance.

A heavy steel door blocked the stairs.

Richard stopped.

His entire body reacted before his mind understood.

His hands began shaking.

"This..."

He whispered.

"This is it."

Ruiz looked at the door.

"The door?"

Richard nodded.

"I've seen this."

"Somewhere."

Elena stepped closer.

"Richard."

He looked at her.

"I opened this door."

FLASHBACK

Young Richard stood in front of the steel door.

Behind it...

Amelia was screaming.

"Richard!"

"Please!"

"Help me!"

His small hands struggled with the lock.

He found the key hanging nearby.

He opened it.

The door moved slowly.

Inside...

Amelia wasn't alone.

A man stood behind her.

Daniel.

But Daniel wasn't a child anymore.

Not in Richard's memory.

He was older.

Much older.

Impossible.

Young Richard froze.

"Daniel?"

The older version of his brother smiled.

"You're not supposed to be here."

Then...

A bright flash.

A strange machine.

A voice.

"Memory extraction complete."

Richard screamed.

Then everything disappeared.

Present Day.

Richard collapsed against the wall.

Ruiz caught him.

"What did you see?"

Richard looked terrified.

"Daniel wasn't trapped."

"He was working there."

Elena's face changed.

"No..."

Richard looked at the basement door.

"My brother wasn't a victim."

"He was one of them."

The three of them opened the door.

The basement was enormous.

Not a basement.

A laboratory.

Old computers lined the walls.

Medical equipment.

Observation rooms.

Hundreds of files.

Ruiz walked deeper.

"This place..."

He looked around.

"This is where they experimented."

Elena found a cabinet.

Inside were hundreds of photographs.

Families.

Children.

New identities.

People who had been erased and replaced.

Then she saw one picture.

She froze.

"Richard."

He came over.

The photograph showed a young girl.

Amelia.

Standing beside another child.

A little boy.

Richard.

But behind them...

Was Daniel.

Holding a document.

The title was visible.

PROJECT ECHO

Ruiz opened a nearby file.

Inside was a list of names.

Victims.

Subjects.

Targets.

Then one name made Elena's blood run cold.

ELENA MARSHALL

Her own name.

She grabbed the file.

"No."

Richard looked at her.

"What?"

She opened it.

The document contained photographs of her childhood.

Medical records.

Psychological evaluations.

Dates.

Everything.

Ruiz looked shocked.

"You were part of this?"

Elena shook her head.

"I didn't know."

The final page contained a handwritten note.

Not from a doctor.

Not from a scientist.

From Amelia.

"Elena is the only one who can expose them."

"Protect her memory until the right moment."

Richard stared.

"Protect your memory?"

Elena suddenly stepped backward.

A terrible realization crossed her face.

"No..."

"What?"

She touched her temple.

"I understand now."

Ruiz approached.

"Understand what?"

Elena looked at Richard.

"When I said I didn't remember that night..."

She swallowed.

"It's because I wasn't supposed to."

A sound echoed through the basement.

Footsteps.

Someone was walking above them.

Ruiz immediately reached for his weapon.

"Someone's here."

The footsteps stopped.

Then a voice came from the staircase.

"Still searching for answers?"

Everyone froze.

A man appeared at the top of the stairs.

Older.

Scarred.

Walking with a slight limp.

Richard stared.

Impossible.

The man smiled.

"Hello, brother."

Richard couldn't breathe.

"Daniel."

Daniel slowly walked down.

"You finally remember me."

Ruiz raised his weapon.

"Don't move."

Daniel ignored him.

His eyes remained on Richard.

"You always were the emotional one."

Richard's voice trembled.

"You tried to kill me."

Daniel smiled sadly.

"No."

"I saved you."

Richard stepped forward.

"You erased my memories."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"Because remembering would have destroyed you."

Elena looked at him.

"Where is Amelia?"

Daniel's expression changed.

For the first time...

Fear appeared.

"She was never missing."

Richard stared.

"What are you saying?"

Daniel looked toward the walls.

Toward the laboratory.

Toward all the secrets buried beneath the house.

Then whispered:

"Amelia is the person who created Black Compass."

Silence.

No one moved.

Daniel continued.

"And she has been watching all of you from the beginning."

A monitor suddenly turned on behind them.

A woman's face appeared.

Older.

But unmistakable.

Richard stopped breathing.

"Amelia..."

The woman on the screen smiled.

And said:

"Hello, Richard."

May you like

"I've been waiting thirty years for you to remember."
