CHAPTER 6 The Baby They Tried to Erase

The fluorescent lights of the neonatal intensive care unit glowed softly in the darkness.
Tiny monitors blinked.
Machines hummed.
Behind the glass walls, rows of incubators held babies who had entered the world too soon.
At the far end of the room, one incubator was surrounded by two nurses and an armed police officer.
Baby Howard.
Barely four pounds.
Wrapped in a pale pink blanket.
She slept peacefully, unaware that her life had become the center of a deadly conspiracy.
Elena stood outside the glass despite the doctor's orders.
She still wore a hospital gown.
The surgical bandage beneath it throbbed with every heartbeat.
Detective Brooks walked beside her.
"You shouldn't be out of bed."
"I've spent months preparing for this."
Elena never looked away from the incubator.
"I'm not missing the moment I meet my daughter."
The nurse opened the door.
"For just one minute."
Elena stepped inside.
She reached through the small opening in the incubator.
The baby's tiny fingers instinctively wrapped around hers.
Elena smiled through tears.
"Hello, little miracle."
For the first time in weeks...
She allowed herself to believe they might survive.
At the Howard mansion, Detective Ruiz had converted the library into a temporary command center.
Whiteboards covered the walls.
Photographs connected by strings.
Financial records.
Medical files.
Security stills.
Three names sat at the center.
Claire Benson.
Vanessa Sinclair.
Elena Howard.
Ruiz stared at the board.
"It still doesn't fit."
An officer looked up.
"What doesn't?"
"The timeline."
He pointed toward Claire's disappearance.
"Claire vanished three years ago."
Then toward Elena's marriage.
"Elena entered Richard's life two years later."
He frowned.
"So why was Elena already investigating Claire before she ever married Richard?"
No one had an answer.
Richard entered quietly.
He hadn't slept.
His eyes were bloodshot.
"I want the truth."
Ruiz nodded.
"So do I."
Richard looked at the evidence wall.
"Where do we start?"
Ruiz handed him a thin folder.
"The hospital."
Richard frowned.
"What hospital?"
"The one where Claire had her prenatal appointments."
Thirty minutes later...
The hospital archive manager unlocked a storage room.
Dust covered dozens of cardboard boxes.
"We keep records for ten years."
Ruiz handed over Claire's patient number.
The manager searched for several minutes before stopping.
"That's strange."
"What?"
"The file is incomplete."
Ruiz frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"The pregnancy records are here..."
She flipped through the documents.
"...but the delivery records are missing."
Richard stared at her.
"There was no delivery."
"Claire died."
The manager slowly shook her head.
"According to this system..."
"...she gave birth."
Silence.
Ruiz felt his pulse quicken.
"That's impossible."
"I'm only telling you what the records say."
She turned the computer monitor toward them.
Live Birth
Female
Healthy
Richard's hands began to tremble.
"No..."
"No..."
Ruiz looked at the date.
Claire had supposedly given birth...
Three days before her official death.
"Where's the baby?"
The manager typed rapidly.
Then stopped.
"I..."
"What?"
"The adoption records have been deleted."
Ruiz and Richard exchanged a look.
Someone had erased an entire child from existence.
Meanwhile...
Across town...
Vanessa sat inside an interrogation room.
She had refused a lawyer.
She had refused food.
She had refused to answer every question.
Detective Hayes entered carrying a thick folder.
He sat down.
"You know..."
He smiled politely.
"I've interrogated murderers."
"Fraudsters."
"Kidnappers."
"They all make the same mistake."
Vanessa remained silent.
"They think silence protects them."
He slid a photograph across the table.
It showed Claire's hospital bracelet.
Vanessa didn't react.
Then he placed down another photograph.
This one showed Elena holding the steel evidence box three years earlier.
Vanessa's eyes widened almost imperceptibly.
Hayes noticed.
"So."
"You've seen this before."
Still no answer.
Then he placed one final photograph onto the table.
Vanessa's composure finally cracked.
It was a newborn baby.
Wrapped in a hospital blanket.
Someone had written one word across the back.
Hope.
Vanessa whispered,
"...Where did you get that?"
Hayes leaned forward.
"So you recognize her."
Vanessa immediately realized her mistake.
She looked away.
Too late.
Back at the archive room...
Ruiz searched through another box.
Old surveillance footage from the maternity ward.
The video quality was poor.
Grainy.
Black and white.
The timestamp read:
02:14 A.M.
A nurse wheeled Claire's newborn toward the nursery.
Seconds later...
Another woman entered the hallway.
Her face was hidden beneath a surgical mask.
She stopped the nurse.
Said something.
The nurse nodded.
Then handed over the baby.
Richard stared in disbelief.
"Who is she?"
Ruiz zoomed in.
The woman's wrist briefly became visible.
She wore an elegant silver bracelet shaped like intertwined roses.
Ruiz froze.
He had seen that bracelet before.
Not in a photograph.
Not in a report.
Yesterday.
Inside an evidence bag.
Vanessa's bracelet.
"No..."
Richard whispered.
Ruiz didn't answer.
Instead, he rewound the footage.
Frame by frame.
Something caught his attention.
The masked woman wasn't alone.
A man followed several steps behind her.
Tall.
Broad shoulders.
Walking with a noticeable limp.
His face remained hidden.
But as he reached for the nursery door...
His sleeve slipped back.
A distinctive tattoo appeared on his wrist.
A black compass.
Ruiz's expression darkened.
"So that's where the name came from."
Richard frowned.
"What name?"
Ruiz looked at him.
"The organization Elena mentioned."
"Black Compass."
At the hospital...
Elena had finally fallen asleep.
Brooks remained outside her room.
A nurse approached.
"Officer?"
"What is it?"
"Someone left flowers."
Brooks looked at the bouquet.
White lilies.
No sender's name.
Just a small card.
He opened it.
His face immediately lost all color.
The card contained only one handwritten sentence.
You protected the wrong baby.
Brooks rushed into Elena's room.
"Wake up!"
Elena opened her eyes instantly.
"What happened?"
He handed her the card.
She read it once.
Then again.
Her breathing became shallow.
"No..."
Brooks frowned.
"What?"
Elena looked toward the neonatal intensive care unit.
"They're not talking about my daughter."
Brooks stared at her.
"What do you mean?"
A tear rolled down Elena's cheek.
"They're talking about Claire's."
The room fell silent.
Then Elena whispered the words that changed everything.
May you like
"Claire's daughter is still alive."
