CHAPTER 12 The Memory That Should Have Stayed Buried

Richard fell before anyone could catch him.

His body struck the cold laboratory floor.

For one terrifying second...

Nobody moved.

Then Elena dropped beside him.

"Richard!"

She grabbed his shoulders.

"Open your eyes!"

Nothing.

No response.

Only the sound of the machines around them.

The same machines that had destroyed people's lives for decades.

The same machines that had stolen pieces of Richard's mind.

Daniel stood frozen.

His eyes were fixed on his brother.

"He remembered."

Ruiz looked at him.

"Remembered what?"

Daniel's face was pale.

"The night Claire died."

Thomas Howard watched from the shadows.

A small smile crossed his face.

After all these years...

His greatest experiment had finally reached its final stage.

Not a machine.

Not a weapon.

A son.

"Do you understand now?"

Thomas said calmly.

Elena looked up.

Her anger burned through her fear.

"You did this."

Thomas tilted his head.

"Did what?"

"Destroyed your own family?"

He laughed softly.

"No."

"I perfected it."

Daniel stepped forward.

"You don't get to talk about perfection."

Thomas looked at him.

"Still pretending to be the hero?"

Daniel clenched his fists.

"You killed Amelia."

The room became silent.

Richard's unconscious body remained between them.

Thomas smiled.

"No."

"I saved her."

Elena stared.

"Saved her?"

Thomas walked closer.

"Amelia was weak."

"She couldn't accept reality."

"She wanted justice."

"I gave her something better."

"Power."

Ruiz raised his weapon.

"You're under arrest."

Thomas looked amused.

"You think a badge matters here?"

He pointed toward the computers.

"Everything you know."

"Every record."

"Every identity."

"Every person you've ever trusted..."

He smiled.

"Black Compass has touched them."

Ruiz's expression hardened.

"You're bluffing."

Thomas shook his head.

"Am I?"

A monitor turned on.

Thousands of files appeared.

Government officials.

Business leaders.

Police officers.

Judges.

Everyone.

Ruiz stared.

"How many?"

Thomas answered:

"Enough."

Inside Richard's mind...

Darkness.

Then light.

A memory.

A room.

A young woman crying.

Claire.

Richard stood there.

But he wasn't the Richard of today.

He was younger.

Colder.

He watched himself enter the room.

Claire backed away.

"Richard..."

"Please."

Young Richard looked at her.

His expression was empty.

"You shouldn't have found out."

Claire shook her head.

"You said you loved me."

Young Richard remained silent.

Then another voice appeared.

Thomas.

"Remember your purpose."

Claire looked terrified.

"Richard..."

"What did they do to you?"

Young Richard looked down.

For a moment...

A crack appeared.

Pain.

Confusion.

Then Thomas spoke again.

"Erase the weakness."

Richard watched himself lift a syringe.

His own hand.

His own face.

His own action.

"No..."

The present Richard screamed inside the memory.

"No!"

Back in the laboratory...

Richard suddenly woke.

He gasped violently.

Elena grabbed his hand.

"Richard!"

His eyes opened.

But something was different.

The confidence was gone.

The billionaire.

The powerful businessman.

Gone.

Only a broken man remained.

"I remember."

Everyone went silent.

Ruiz stepped closer.

"What happened?"

Richard looked at him.

His voice trembled.

"I was there."

"Claire didn't die because of Vanessa."

"She died because of me."

Elena felt her heart sink.

"Richard..."

He looked at her.

"I hurt her."

Daniel immediately shook his head.

"No."

Richard turned.

"I saw it."

"You saw a memory."

Daniel stepped closer.

"A memory can be changed."

Richard froze.

"What?"

Daniel looked at Thomas.

"He did it again."

Thomas smiled.

"Very good, Daniel."

Daniel's expression became furious.

"You implanted false memories into him."

Thomas didn't deny it.

"Of course."

Richard stared.

"Then what actually happened?"

Thomas smiled.

"Now that's the question."

Elena looked at Thomas.

"You wanted Richard to believe he was guilty."

"Why?"

Thomas walked toward the main computer.

"Because guilt is the strongest prison."

He typed something.

A new file appeared.

CLAIRE BENSON: FINAL RECORDING

Elena froze.

"She recorded something?"

Thomas nodded.

"Claire was smarter than everyone thought."

The video opened.

Claire appeared.

Alive.

Afraid.

But calm.

She looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"I know what happened."

A tear ran down her face.

"But Richard didn't kill me."

Everyone froze.

Richard stared.

The video continued.

"Someone wants Richard to believe he did."

"Because as long as Richard hates himself..."

"He will never look for the real person responsible."

The video distorted.

Then Claire said one final sentence.

"The person who destroyed our family..."

"Was standing beside me the entire time."

The video stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Thomas looked satisfied.

"Interesting."

Ruiz frowned.

"You know who it is."

Thomas smiled.

"Yes."

"Everyone always assumes the killer is the person with the weapon."

He looked around the room.

"But sometimes..."

"The killer is the person who convinces everyone else to look away."

Suddenly, the laboratory door opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Holding a gun.

Richard stared.

"No..."

Daniel whispered.

"Amelia."

The woman walked inside slowly.

Not the woman from the screen.

The real one.

Alive.

Thomas smiled.

"Finally."

Amelia looked at her father.

"You ruined everything."

Thomas laughed.

"I built everything."

"No."

She raised the gun.

"You destroyed everything."

Richard stared at his sister.

"Why?"

Amelia looked at him.

Her eyes filled with regret.

"Because I spent thirty years trying to fix what he broke."

She looked at Thomas.

"And I became exactly like him."

Silence.

Then Amelia lowered the weapon.

"I didn't come here to kill him."

Everyone waited.

She looked at Richard.

"I came here to tell you the truth."

A pause.

"The truth about Claire."

Richard stepped forward.

"What happened that night?"

Amelia's expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

"Claire discovered something."

"What?"

Amelia looked at Thomas.

Then back at Richard.

"She discovered..."

"...that your daughter was never the only child involved."

Richard froze.

"My daughter?"

Amelia nodded.

"Claire wasn't carrying one baby."

The room went silent.

"She was carrying twins."

Elena's breath caught.

"What?"

Amelia whispered:

"One child survived."

"And the other..."

She looked toward Thomas.

"...was taken by Black Compass."

Thomas smiled.

Because he knew what was coming.

Amelia finished:

"Your second child is alive."

Richard couldn't move.

A lifetime of secrets.

A lifetime of lies.

And now...

Another child.

Another missing piece.

Then Amelia revealed the final truth:

May you like

"Your missing child is the person who has been controlling Vanessa from the beginning."
