CHAPTER 10 The Woman Behind the Compass

The screen flickered.

Static crawled across the image.

Then the woman's face became clearer.

Older.

Different.

But impossible to mistake.

Richard stared at the monitor like he was looking at a ghost.

"Amelia..."

His voice barely existed.

For thirty years, he had believed his sister was dead.

Or worse.

A forgotten memory buried somewhere inside his mind.

But now she was standing in front of him.

Alive.

Watching.

Waiting.

The woman on the screen smiled faintly.

"Hello, little brother."

Richard took a step forward.

"Where are you?"

The screen distorted.

Amelia didn't answer.

Instead, she looked toward Daniel.

"You failed."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"I did what was necessary."

"No."

Amelia's voice remained calm.

"You did what you always do."

"You protected yourself."

Detective Ruiz kept his weapon raised.

His eyes moved between Daniel and the screen.

"So you're Amelia Howard."

The woman smiled.

"Detective Ruiz."

"You've caused quite a problem."

Ruiz frowned.

"You know me?"

"I know everyone investigating Black Compass."

The screen displayed hundreds of files.

Names.

Faces.

Investigators.

Journalists.

Politicians.

Everyone who had ever come close.

Ruiz's expression changed.

"You've been watching us."

"For decades."

Amelia leaned closer to the camera.

"Black Compass survives because people believe secrets disappear."

"They don't."

"They wait."

Richard turned toward Daniel.

"Tell me the truth."

Daniel remained silent.

"Was everything a lie?"

"Was Claire's death part of this?"

Daniel looked away.

That was answer enough.

Richard's anger exploded.

"You knew!"

"You knew Vanessa was hurting people!"

Daniel finally looked at him.

"You think Vanessa was the monster?"

He laughed bitterly.

"Vanessa was just a knife."

"Someone else was holding it."

Elena stepped forward.

"Then who?"

Daniel looked at her.

For the first time, his expression softened.

"You."

Elena froze.

"What?"

"You were always the variable they couldn't control."

Richard immediately moved between them.

"Don't."

Daniel shook his head.

"I'm not threatening her."

"I'm explaining."

He looked at Elena.

"Amelia didn't choose you randomly."

"She needed someone who could survive."

Elena frowned.

"Survive what?"

Daniel pointed toward the laboratory around them.

"Project Echo."

Ruiz walked toward the old computers.

Several monitors were still functioning.

He opened one folder.

A list appeared.

PROJECT ECHO

MEMORY RECONSTRUCTION PROGRAM

IDENTITY REPLACEMENT PROTOCOL

EMOTIONAL CONDITIONING

His face darkened.

"This wasn't just about changing memories."

Daniel nodded.

"No."

"It was about changing people."

Richard looked at Amelia on the screen.

"Why?"

The question carried thirty years of pain.

"Why would you do this?"

Amelia's expression changed.

For a moment...

She looked like the little girl from his memories.

Scared.

Lonely.

But then it disappeared.

"Because our family was destroyed by people who controlled information."

"Our father built an empire by owning people's secrets."

"He ruined lives."

"He erased anyone who threatened him."

Richard shook his head.

"So you became him?"

"No."

Amelia's voice sharpened.

"I became something worse."

The room went silent.

"Because something worse was required."

Suddenly...

The laboratory lights turned red.

An alarm began.

Daniel looked up.

His face changed.

"What did you do?"

Amelia smiled.

"I activated the final protocol."

Ruiz looked at the screen.

"What protocol?"

Amelia answered calmly.

"The one that removes every remaining witness."

The basement doors slammed shut.

Heavy locks engaged.

Everyone turned.

Trapped.

Richard looked at Daniel.

"You knew this would happen?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"For once..."

"I didn't."

A strange sound filled the room.

Gas.

Not smoke.

Not fire.

Something invisible.

Elena covered her mouth.

"Everyone out!"

Ruiz ran toward the exit.

The door wouldn't open.

Daniel moved quickly.

He grabbed an emergency panel and started breaking it.

Richard stared.

"You can open it?"

Daniel didn't look back.

"I built this place."

"You think I don't know the exits?"

The gas spread.

Ruiz covered his face with his jacket.

Elena started coughing.

Richard grabbed her arm.

"We need to move."

But Daniel suddenly stopped.

He stared at one of the monitors.

A video had started playing.

A young Amelia appeared.

Not the woman from the screen.

The girl Richard remembered.

The little sister who cried behind the locked door.

Her voice trembled.

"If you're watching this..."

"...it means I failed."

Everyone froze.

Young Amelia continued.

"I created Black Compass to destroy the people who destroyed us."

"But I discovered something too late."

The video glitched.

"I wasn't fighting the system."

"I became the system."

Daniel stared at the screen.

"No..."

Amelia's younger voice continued.

"Daniel..."

"If Richard remembers everything..."

"Tell him the truth."

The room became silent.

Then the next sentence appeared.

And everyone froze.

"You were never my brother's enemy."

Richard looked at Daniel.

"What?"

Young Amelia continued:

"You were the only person who tried to save me."

Daniel closed his eyes.

A tear rolled down his face.

The gas continued spreading.

Ruiz looked between them.

"Someone explain."

Daniel finally spoke.

His voice was broken.

"I didn't erase Richard's memories because I wanted power."

"I erased them because Amelia ordered me to."

Richard stared.

"Why?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Because you saw something."

"What?"

Daniel pointed toward the final computer.

A file was opening automatically.

A name appeared.

ORIGINAL CREATOR OF BLACK COMPASS

The screen displayed:

THOMAS HOWARD

Richard's father.

But beneath it...

Another line appeared.

CURRENT DIRECTOR

Everyone held their breath.

The name loaded slowly.

Then appeared.

RICHARD HOWARD

The room went silent.

Richard stared.

"No..."

"I never..."

Daniel looked at him with sadness.

"You don't remember."

The gas thickened.

The lights flickered.

Amelia's voice came through the speakers one final time.

"Richard..."

"You spent thirty years believing you were fighting Black Compass."

A pause.

"But the truth is..."

"You were the one who inherited it."

The screen went black.

May you like

And the entire laboratory lost power.
