CHAPTER 1 The Fall Was Only the Beginning

The crack of Elena Howard's body striking the marble floor echoed through the mansion like a gunshot.

Crystal chandeliers trembled.

Servants gasped.

Someone screamed.

For one endless heartbeat, time itself seemed to stop.

At the top of the staircase, Vanessa Sinclair stood frozen, one trembling hand still stretched forward as though she couldn't believe what she had done.

Then her performance began.

"Oh my God!"

She rushed down two steps before collapsing dramatically into Mrs. Howard's embrace.

"I didn't mean to!" she cried, tears flowing with almost unnatural speed. "She attacked me... I was frightened... I just pushed her away..."

Mrs. Howard looked from Vanessa to the woman lying motionless below.

"Call an ambulance!" she shouted.

"No... call the doctor! Hurry!"

Servants scattered in every direction.

One knelt beside Elena.

"Mrs. Howard... can you hear me?"

No response.

Blood slowly spread beneath a strand of dark hair where her head had struck the marble.

Her breathing came in weak, uneven bursts.

One hand remained protectively wrapped around her swollen stomach.

Eight months pregnant.

Every second mattered.

To everyone watching, Elena looked like a woman standing at death's door.

Only Elena knew the truth.

Breathe slowly.

Don't move too soon.

Don't let your pulse race.

Pain exploded through her spine.

Her left shoulder burned.

Every breath felt like broken glass.

The fall hadn't been staged.

It had been real.

More dangerous than even she had anticipated.

But she had known Vanessa would eventually lose control.

People like Vanessa always did.

Greed was patient.

Jealousy wasn't.

Hidden beneath the sleeve of her cardigan, Elena's fingers found the phone taped against her waist.

Without opening her eyes...

Tap.

Tap.

The emergency call connected instantly.

"Detective Ruiz..."

Her voice barely escaped her lips.

"It happened."

Silence.

Then the calm voice she had waited months to hear.

"Stay alive."

"We're coming."

The line disconnected.

Elena slipped the phone back into place.

Her body went limp once more.

The helpless victim returned.

Above her, Vanessa saw everything exactly as she'd imagined.

The servants were panicking.

Mrs. Howard was crying.

Richard Howard had not yet arrived.

Perfect.

Everything was unfolding exactly according to plan.

She wiped fresh tears across her cheeks before raising her voice.

"She destroyed this family!"

Everyone looked toward her.

"She trapped Richard into marriage!"

"She only wanted his fortune!"

"She's been manipulating all of us!"

Some servants exchanged uncertain glances.

Others simply lowered their eyes.

No one dared challenge the woman who had become Richard Howard's constant companion over the past year.

Vanessa noticed their silence.

She mistook it for agreement.

And that was her first mistake.

Outside...

Rain had just begun to fall.

A black SUV rolled through the estate gates.

It wasn't an ambulance.

It wasn't the police.

It belonged to Richard Howard.

The billionaire stepped out before the vehicle had fully stopped.

His expensive suit was soaked within seconds.

"What happened?"

Nobody answered immediately.

His eyes found Elena.

For one horrifying instant...

He forgot how to breathe.

"Elena!"

He ran across the marble hall and dropped to his knees beside her.

His hands shook violently.

Blood.

So much blood.

"Call the hospital!"

"It's already been done, sir!"

Richard looked toward Vanessa.

Their eyes met.

Something strange flickered across his face.

Not grief.

Not rage.

Confusion.

Vanessa expected him to comfort her.

Instead...

He slowly stood.

"What happened?"

"I told you!"

She forced another sob.

"She tried attacking me!"

"I defended myself!"

"It was an accident!"

Richard didn't answer.

He simply looked down the staircase.

Then...

Up again.

His gaze lingered on the polished wooden railing.

One section carried a faint scratch.

Fresh.

Very fresh.

Almost as if someone had struggled there.

His military instincts, long buried beneath years of boardrooms and billion-dollar negotiations, whispered that something didn't fit.

Across town...

Detective Gabriel Ruiz closed the folder lying on his desk.

Its cover read:

HOWARD ESTATE INVESTIGATION

Inside were photographs.

Financial records.

Audio transcripts.

Surveillance reports.

Dozens of anonymous tips.

And one handwritten note from Elena.

If anything happens to me...

Don't believe the first story you hear.

Ruiz had spent four months building this case.

Officially...

He wasn't assigned to it anymore.

His superiors had ordered him to stop.

Too many powerful people were involved.

Too much money.

Too much influence.

But Elena had continued gathering evidence.

Quietly.

Patiently.

She had never stopped.

Now...

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He already knew who it was before answering.

"It happened."

Three words.

Exactly as promised.

Ruiz stood immediately.

His partner looked up.

"You finally got the call?"

Ruiz grabbed his coat.

"Notify everyone."

"Warrants?"

"No."

"Backup?"

"No."

The younger detective frowned.

"We're going in without authorization?"

Ruiz smiled grimly.

"Tonight..."

"They're going to make the authorization impossible to ignore."

Back at the mansion...

The family doctor arrived before the ambulance.

He knelt beside Elena.

Checked her pulse.

Then reached for the fetal heartbeat monitor in his emergency kit.

Everyone waited.

Silence.

He moved the sensor.

Again.

Nothing.

Mrs. Howard covered her mouth.

Richard's face drained of color.

Vanessa fought to hide the smile threatening to appear.

The doctor adjusted the monitor one last time.

Then...

A heartbeat.

Strong.

Steady.

Everyone released the breath they'd been holding.

"The baby is alive."

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

Impossible.

She had pushed Elena with everything she had.

How could the child still survive?

Before she could think further...

Blue emergency lights flashed through the mansion windows.

"The ambulance," one servant whispered.

But when the doors opened...

The first people to enter weren't paramedics.

They were detectives.

Ruiz walked straight into the grand hall.

Rain dripped from his coat.

His eyes swept across every face.

Then settled on Vanessa.

"You got here fast," Richard said.

"I wasn't expecting detectives."

Ruiz reached into his pocket.

Removed a small evidence bag.

Inside lay a silver bracelet.

Vanessa's bracelet.

The one she believed she'd lost weeks ago.

Ruiz held it up.

"We're not here because of today's fall."

He paused.

"We're here because someone in this house has already committed murder."

The room fell silent.

Vanessa's heartbeat stopped for just a fraction of a second.

How...

How could they possibly know?

Ruiz looked directly into her eyes.

Then smiled.

A slow smile that carried no warmth at all.

"You should have left the cameras alone."

May you like

Vanessa felt every drop of blood drain from her face.
