CHAPTER 14 The Last Lie Elena Told

The silence after the call was worse than any accusation.

Richard stood in the center of the underground laboratory.

Surrounded by decades of secrets.

Surrounded by evidence of lies.

But nothing had hurt him like the look on Elena's face.

Because she wasn't angry.

She wasn't confused.

She was afraid.

And that meant Lily's words had touched something real.

Richard slowly turned toward her.

"Elena."

His voice was quiet.

Almost broken.

"Tell me she lied."

Elena opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That hesitation destroyed him more than any answer.

"Tell me."

"Please."

Elena looked down.

And for the first time since the staircase fall...

She stopped pretending.

"I didn't kill Claire."

Richard closed his eyes.

"But you know what happened."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

The word echoed through the laboratory.

Ruiz lowered his weapon.

Even Daniel looked shocked.

"How much do you know?"

Elena took a deep breath.

"Everything."

Three years earlier...

Before Elena became Mrs. Howard.

Before the mansion.

Before Vanessa.

She was a researcher.

A specialist in memory science.

She had spent years studying how trauma changed the human brain.

Until she discovered something impossible.

A hidden project.

A project buried beneath several fake companies.

A project called:

Echo.

She followed the money.

The files.

The experiments.

Until she found the Howard name.

The first person she met wasn't Richard.

It was Claire.

Claire found her.

Not the other way around.

Claire arrived at Elena's apartment one night.

Terrified.

Pregnant.

Desperate.

"I know what they're doing."

Elena remembered her words.

"They're turning people into weapons."

Claire gave her a folder.

Inside were documents proving Black Compass existed.

But one document shocked Elena.

A birth record.

Two children.

Two babies.

Both belonging to Claire.

One hidden.

One taken.

"Claire wanted me to find Lily."

Elena whispered.

"She believed Lily was alive."

Richard looked at her.

"And you promised to help."

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you save her?"

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I failed."

Ruiz stepped closer.

"Explain."

Elena looked at him.

"Claire discovered who Lily was."

"She discovered Black Compass had raised her."

"And she planned to expose everything."

Richard's voice became colder.

"What happened?"

Elena closed her eyes.

"The night Claire died..."

"I followed her."

FLASHBACK

A dark road outside the city.

Claire stood beside her car.

She was holding documents.

Elena arrived moments later.

"Claire!"

Claire turned.

"You came."

Elena ran toward her.

"We need to leave."

"Now."

Claire shook her head.

"It's too late."

A car approached.

Vanessa stepped out.

But she wasn't alone.

Someone else was watching.

Someone hidden.

Claire looked terrified.

Then she handed Elena the documents.

"If something happens..."

"Take care of Lily."

Elena grabbed her arm.

"No."

"We can still fix this."

Claire smiled sadly.

"No, Elena."

"They already won."

Then the headlights appeared.

A crash.

A scream.

Darkness.

Present day.

Richard looked horrified.

"You saw her die."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

"And you did nothing?"

The accusation hurt.

But Elena accepted it.

"I tried."

"I called emergency services."

"I tried to save her."

"But before she lost consciousness..."

"Claire grabbed my hand."

"She said one thing."

Richard's voice trembled.

"What?"

Elena looked at him.

"She said..."

"Don't let Richard remember."

Richard froze.

"Why?"

"Because Claire knew."

"Knew what?"

Elena looked toward Thomas.

"She knew Richard wasn't the enemy."

Thomas's expression changed.

For the first time...

He looked angry.

Ruiz noticed.

"You knew."

Thomas said nothing.

Ruiz stepped closer.

"You manipulated Richard."

"You made him believe he was responsible."

Thomas smiled.

"Because guilt is easier to control than loyalty."

Daniel looked at his father with disgust.

"You destroyed your own son."

Thomas shrugged.

"I improved him."

Suddenly...

The laboratory doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman entered.

Long dark hair.

Cold expression.

Lily.

Richard stopped breathing.

Not a photograph.

Not a recording.

His daughter.

Alive.

She looked at him.

Not with love.

With disappointment.

"So."

She said quietly.

"After all these years..."

"You finally remember me."

Richard couldn't move.

"Lily..."

She smiled bitterly.

"You say my name like you deserve to."

Elena stepped forward.

"Lily..."

Lily immediately pointed a gun at her.

"Don't."

Richard moved in front of Elena.

"No."

Lily looked at him.

"Still protecting her?"

Richard's voice broke.

"She protected you."

Lily laughed.

"Did she?"

She looked at Elena.

"Tell him."

Elena remained silent.

Lily's expression hardened.

"Tell him what you did."

Richard looked between them.

"What is she talking about?"

Elena closed her eyes.

"I made a choice."

"What choice?"

"A terrible one."

Lily stepped closer.

"When my mother died..."

"Elena had a chance to expose Black Compass."

"She had proof."

"She had everything."

Richard stared.

"Why didn't you?"

Elena looked at him.

"Because of you."

Richard froze.

"Me?"

"Yes."

"Thomas had already altered your memories."

"If I exposed Black Compass then..."

"They would destroy you."

Lily shook her head.

"No."

"They would have saved me."

She looked at Richard.

"But she chose you."

The words hit harder than anything.

Richard whispered:

"You sacrificed my daughter to save me?"

Elena cried.

"I thought I was saving everyone."

Lily raised the gun slightly.

"You thought wrong."

Suddenly, Thomas laughed.

Everyone turned.

A slow, cruel laugh.

Because he was enjoying every second.

"You see?"

"This is why humans are weak."

"They always choose."

"One person over another."

"One life over another."

Richard looked at him.

"You planned this."

Thomas smiled.

"Of course."

"I needed all of you here."

Ruiz frowned.

"For what?"

Thomas looked at Lily.

Then Richard.

Then Elena.

"To complete Project Echo."

The computers activated.

A final file opened.

SUBJECTS REQUIRED:

RICHARD HOWARD

ELENA HOWARD

LILY HOWARD

Richard stared.

"What is this?"

Thomas answered:

"The final experiment."

"Three generations."

"One family."

"One choice."

The screen displayed a countdown.

00:59:59

Ruiz looked alarmed.

"What happens when it reaches zero?"

Thomas smiled.

"The world learns the truth."

A pause.

"And this family disappears forever."

The countdown continued.

59:58.

59:57.

59:56.

Lily looked at Richard.

For the first time...

Her anger weakened.

Because she realized something.

Thomas wasn't planning to kill them.

He was planning something worse.

Richard whispered:

"What did you do?"

Thomas smiled.

"I uploaded your memories."

Everyone froze.

"Every secret."

"Every crime."

"Every lie."

"Every person's darkest moment."

Richard stared.

"Where?"

Thomas looked toward the ceiling.

"Everywhere."

The countdown continued.

And then...

Every phone in the world began receiving one file.
