CHAPTER 2 The Cameras Never Lied

Vanessa's heartbeat pounded so violently that, for a terrifying second, she thought everyone in the room could hear it.
You should have left the cameras alone.
Detective Gabriel Ruiz repeated nothing.
He didn't need to.
The sentence lingered in the air like smoke after an explosion.
Richard looked from Ruiz to Vanessa.
"Cameras?" he asked slowly.
"What cameras?"
Ruiz didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he knelt beside Elena as paramedics rushed into the mansion carrying a stretcher.
One medic checked her blood pressure while another attached a fetal monitor to her abdomen.
The steady rhythm of the baby's heartbeat filled the silent hall.
Relief flickered across Richard's face, but it vanished almost instantly.
His eyes remained fixed on his unconscious wife.
"Mrs. Howard needs surgery immediately," one paramedic said.
"There may be internal bleeding."
Richard nodded without hesitation.
"Take her."
As the stretcher rolled toward the front entrance, Elena's fingers twitched.
Almost imperceptibly.
Ruiz noticed.
No one else did.
As he walked beside the stretcher, Elena barely parted her lips.
"Third floor..."
Ruiz leaned closer.
"The painting."
Then her eyes closed again.
The ambulance disappeared through the gates.
Rain hammered against its roof as sirens echoed into the night.
Inside, Elena opened her eyes.
The young paramedic beside her nearly jumped.
"You shouldn't be awake."
"I don't have much time."
Her voice was weak but steady.
"Listen carefully."
The paramedic exchanged a glance with his partner.
"You suffered a severe fall. You need to conserve your strength."
Elena shook her head.
"If Detective Ruiz asks..."
"...tell him the painting in the blue hallway."
The paramedic frowned.
"What painting?"
"The woman holding lilies."
Her breathing became shallow.
"Behind it."
Then she lost consciousness for real.
This time, no acting.
Back inside the mansion, tension settled over every room.
Richard stood in the grand hall.
"So," he said quietly.
"Someone explain why detectives are talking about hidden cameras."
Vanessa forced herself to breathe normally.
She couldn't panic.
Not yet.
Everything had been cleaned.
Every message deleted.
Every meeting carefully arranged away from the mansion.
There was no evidence.
There couldn't be.
Ruiz looked toward the ceiling.
"Mr. Howard..."
"Did your wife ever mention renovating the security system?"
Richard frowned.
"No."
"Interesting."
Ruiz slowly removed a tablet from his leather briefcase.
He tapped the screen twice.
A floor plan of the mansion appeared.
Red dots covered almost every room.
The living room.
Dining hall.
Library.
Hallways.
Garage.
Garden.
Richard stared.
"What is this?"
Ruiz looked directly at him.
"Your wife's private surveillance network."
Silence.
Mrs. Howard whispered,
"She installed cameras?"
Ruiz nodded.
"One hundred and twelve."
Vanessa's knees almost gave way.
One hundred and twelve?
Impossible.
She had personally searched Elena's bedroom.
Twice.
Three months earlier...
Elena sat alone in a quiet café across town.
Across from her sat Detective Ruiz.
"You understand what you're asking?"
Ruiz asked.
"If I help you..."
"...I can't protect you every second."
Elena stirred her untouched tea.
"I don't need protection."
"I need proof."
Ruiz slid a business card across the table.
"A security consultant."
"The best."
"Former military."
"No one will detect what he installs."
Elena smiled for the first time in weeks.
"That's all I need."
Present Day.
Vanessa clenched her fists behind her back.
She remembered every conversation.
Every manipulation.
Every lie she had whispered to Richard.
Had those conversations been recorded?
No.
They couldn't have been.
She had always been careful.
Hadn't she?
Ruiz continued.
"The cameras uploaded every recording to an encrypted cloud server."
Richard looked confused.
"Then why didn't Elena tell me?"
Ruiz's answer came instantly.
"Because she didn't know who she could trust."
Those words landed harder than anyone expected.
Richard looked wounded.
Mrs. Howard lowered her eyes.
Vanessa felt sweat running down her spine.
Ruiz's phone vibrated.
A message.
Hospital Update: Mother stable. Baby alive. Emergency surgery beginning.
He quietly slipped the phone away.
Good.
Elena had survived the first battle.
Now came the second.
"Detective."
One of the officers approached.
"We found something upstairs."
Ruiz nodded.
"Show me."
Vanessa's pulse accelerated.
No...
No...
Please...
Not upstairs.
She followed several steps behind as they climbed toward the third floor.
The mansion felt different now.
Every painting.
Every vase.
Every hallway.
Could be hiding another secret.
The officers stopped before a massive oil painting.
A beautiful woman dressed in white held a bouquet of lilies.
Ruiz smiled faintly.
"The lilies."
Exactly as Elena had whispered.
He carefully lifted the painting.
Behind it...
Nothing.
Vanessa nearly laughed from relief.
See?
Nothing.
But Ruiz didn't move away.
Instead, he ran his fingers along the wooden frame.
Click.
A hidden magnetic lock released.
An entire section of the wall swung open.
Gasps filled the hallway.
Hidden inside was a steel compartment.
No larger than a suitcase.
Ruiz entered a six-digit code.
The safe opened.
Inside were dozens of neatly labeled hard drives.
USB devices.
Paper files.
Photographs.
Voice recorders.
Everything meticulously organized.
Each folder carried a handwritten label.
Financial Transfers
Hospital Records
Phone Clones
Private Meetings
Insurance Fraud
Then...
One folder made everyone freeze.
Vanessa Sinclair
Vanessa's vision blurred.
No...
No...
No...
Richard slowly reached for the folder.
Ruiz stopped him.
"Not yet."
"This is evidence."
Vanessa finally found her voice.
"This is ridiculous!"
"She's framing me!"
"She planned all this!"
Ruiz looked at her calmly.
"Maybe."
"That's exactly what we'll determine."
He picked up another folder.
Its title made Mrs. Howard gasp.
Death of Michael Carter
Richard frowned.
"Who's Michael Carter?"
Ruiz answered quietly.
"The man officially declared to have died in a boating accident."
He paused.
"Three years ago."
Vanessa felt ice flood her veins.
Michael.
She hadn't heard that name in years.
She had made sure no one ever would again.
Meanwhile...
At St. Vincent Medical Center...
Doctors rushed Elena into the operating room.
Bright surgical lights flooded the room.
Monitors beeped rapidly.
A surgeon looked toward the ultrasound.
"The placenta has partially detached."
Another doctor spoke.
"We're losing blood."
"Hemoglobin falling."
"We may have to deliver the baby tonight."
Outside the operating room...
Richard arrived just in time.
He stood staring through the small glass window.
Unable to move.
Unable to think.
A nurse approached quietly.
"Mr. Howard?"
He didn't answer.
"Your wife asked us to give you this."
She handed him a sealed envelope.
Across the front, written in Elena's elegant handwriting, were only six words.
Open only if I survive.
Richard stared at it in confusion.
"If I survive?"
What kind of letter had Elena prepared?
And...
How long had she believed this day was coming?
Before he could open it...
His phone rang.
Ruiz.
Richard answered immediately.
"What did you find?"
Ruiz's voice was unusually serious.
"You need to come back."
"Right now."
"Why?"
A long pause.
Then Ruiz said six words that turned Richard's blood cold.
May you like
Your wife wasn't the first target.
