CHAPTER 13 The Child Hidden in Plain Sight

For several seconds, nobody breathed.

Not because they were afraid.

Because the human mind had limits.

And Richard Howard had just reached his.

A second child.

A child he never knew existed.

A child taken from Claire.

A child who had grown up somewhere in the shadows of Black Compass.

A child who had been controlling Vanessa.

Richard looked at Amelia.

His voice barely escaped.

"Who?"

Amelia didn't answer.

She looked at Thomas.

And that silence told everyone something.

The answer was connected to him.

Thomas smiled.

"After all these years..."

"You're finally asking the right questions."

Richard stepped toward him.

"Where is my child?"

Thomas didn't move.

"Your child?"

He laughed quietly.

"Interesting choice of words."

Richard's expression hardened.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you still think blood makes someone yours."

Thomas walked around the laboratory.

"Black Compass learned a valuable lesson."

"Family is just another weakness."

"Love."

"Loyalty."

"Attachment."

"All things that make people easy to control."

Elena looked disgusted.

"You turned children into weapons."

Thomas looked at her.

"No."

"We gave them purpose."

Amelia interrupted.

"Stop pretending this was about purpose."

Her voice trembled.

"You stole children because you were afraid."

Thomas looked at her.

"Afraid?"

"Of what?"

Amelia stared at him.

"Of being forgotten."

The room became silent.

For the first time...

Thomas looked old.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just a man who had spent his entire life trying to defeat his own mortality.

Ruiz stepped forward.

"Enough games."

He pointed his weapon.

"Where is Richard's child?"

Thomas smiled.

"You want the truth?"

"Fine."

He walked toward the main computer.

"Access file."

The screen requested a password.

Thomas entered it.

A folder appeared.

PROJECT HEIR

Richard stared.

"What is that?"

Thomas answered:

"The future of Black Compass."

The file opened.

Inside were photos.

Training records.

Psychological evaluations.

The first image appeared.

A baby.

Then a child.

Then a teenager.

Richard stared.

His entire body froze.

"No..."

Elena looked at the screen.

Then covered her mouth.

Because she recognized the face.

Years earlier.

A young girl sat alone inside a Black Compass facility.

No family.

No name.

Only a number.

Subject 07.

A woman in a white coat entered.

"You have a special purpose."

The girl looked up.

"What purpose?"

The woman smiled.

"You will inherit everything."

The girl frowned.

"I don't want it."

The woman leaned closer.

"You don't get to choose."

"You are a Howard."

Present day.

Richard stepped closer to the monitor.

The photograph showed a young woman.

Late twenties.

Cold eyes.

Perfect posture.

A familiar expression.

Because Richard had seen that expression before.

On Vanessa.

On Thomas.

On himself.

"No..."

Elena whispered.

"Richard?"

His voice cracked.

"That's impossible."

Ruiz looked at him.

"Who is she?"

Richard couldn't answer.

Amelia did.

"Her name is Lily."

The name hit him strangely.

Like a memory he had never lived.

Lily.

A little girl laughing.

A red ribbon.

A hospital room.

A woman crying.

Richard grabbed his head.

Another memory surfaced.

Not created.

Not planted.

Real.

A newborn baby.

Claire holding her.

Whispering:

"Her name should be Lily."

Richard collapsed into a chair.

"Claire knew."

Amelia nodded.

"Yes."

"Claire knew the second child survived."

"She spent months trying to find her."

"That's why Vanessa killed her."

Richard looked up.

"No."

Amelia shook her head.

"Vanessa didn't kill Claire."

"She only delivered her."

Everyone froze.

Ruiz narrowed his eyes.

"What does that mean?"

Amelia looked toward Thomas.

"Vanessa thought she was working for Black Compass."

"She believed she was removing obstacles."

"But she never knew who was giving the orders."

Richard's voice was quiet.

"Who?"

Amelia looked at the screen.

At Lily's photograph.

"Her."

The room became cold.

Elena stared.

"Your own daughter?"

Amelia nodded.

"She was raised believing the Howard family destroyed her life."

"Black Compass taught her one thing."

"Revenge."

A phone rang.

Everyone turned.

It came from the old laboratory desk.

The screen displayed:

LILY

Richard's face changed.

His hands shook.

The phone continued ringing.

Nobody moved.

Then Amelia whispered:

"Answer it."

Richard slowly picked up.

For several seconds...

Only silence.

Then a woman's voice.

Calm.

Controlled.

Familiar.

"Hello, Father."

Richard closed his eyes.

Because he knew that voice.

Not from memory.

From reality.

It was Vanessa's voice.

But different.

Stronger.

Colder.

"You finally found me."

Richard couldn't speak.

"Lily?"

A soft laugh.

"So you remember my name."

Elena looked at him.

Richard forced himself to ask:

"Where are you?"

The woman on the phone paused.

Then answered:

"Somewhere you should have protected me from."

Richard's heart broke.

"I didn't know."

"No."

Her voice became colder.

"You didn't."

"You forgot."

A silence.

Then:

"And that's exactly why I hate you."

Thomas watched Richard carefully.

He wasn't smiling anymore.

Because something had gone wrong.

Lily was supposed to remain controlled.

But she was making her own moves.

Richard stood.

"Lily."

"I can fix this."

"No."

Her answer came instantly.

"You can't."

"You fixed everything else."

"You erased."

"You replaced."

"You destroyed."

"You became him."

Richard looked at Thomas.

Then back at the phone.

"I am not him."

Lily laughed.

"You still don't understand."

"That's the saddest part."

A pause.

Then she whispered:

"Father..."

"Do you know what Vanessa's final order was?"

Richard frowned.

"What?"

Lily answered:

"Kill Elena."

Everyone froze.

Elena's face went pale.

Richard gripped the phone.

"Why?"

The answer came softly.

"Because Elena is the only person who knows the truth about my mother."

Richard looked at Elena.

The realization hit.

"What truth?"

Silence.

Then Lily said:

"The truth that Claire didn't die because of Black Compass."

A pause.

"She died because Elena chose to let her."

Elena's eyes widened.

Richard slowly turned toward his wife.

"No..."

The phone disconnected.

Nobody moved.

Richard stared at Elena.

The woman who had saved him.

The woman who had protected him.

The woman he trusted.

And for the first time...

He wondered if she had been protecting him...

May you like

Or hiding from him.
