Chapter 7: Vault Seven

The mechanical voice echoed through the collapsing corridor.

"Identity recognized."

"Welcome home... Lily Blackwood."

For a heartbeat, no one spoke.

Even the distant explosions seemed to fade beneath the weight of those words.

Ethan slowly looked at the biometric scanner.

"No one touched it."

Hayes stepped closer, examining the device through the flickering emergency lights.

"It isn't reading fingerprints."

"It's using facial recognition."

Amelia frowned.

"But Lily isn't even here."

Hayes pointed toward a tiny lens mounted above the door.

"It already scanned her."

"When?"

Ethan's mind raced.

"The night she handed me the phone."

"The camera in the mansion..."

"...Victor must have installed the same recognition system years ago."

Another violent tremor shook the tunnel.

Concrete cracked overhead.

The computerized announcement returned.

"180 SECONDS REMAINING."

Alpha Team's commander shouted, "Sir! We have less than three minutes!"

Ethan looked at the vault door.

"If Victor protected this place for seven years..."

"...whatever's inside is worth dying for."

He placed his hand on the cold steel.

Nothing happened.

Then the scanner spoke again.

"Secondary authentication required."

A thin beam of blue light swept across Amelia's face.

"Identity confirmed."

"Amelia Blackwood."

A second beam scanned Ethan.

"Identity confirmed."

"Ethan Blackwood."

Three heavy locking bolts retracted with thunderous metallic clanks.

The circular vault door slowly rotated open.

A rush of cold air escaped from the darkness beyond.

The chamber inside was untouched by time.

Unlike the laboratories above, this room felt almost sacred.

Temperature-controlled cabinets lined the walls.

Shelves of meticulously labeled files stretched into the distance.

A large digital clock displayed one date repeatedly.

October 14.

The night of the hospital fire.

Hayes whispered, "This isn't a storage room."

"It's an archive."

Amelia walked toward a wooden cradle displayed beneath protective glass.

She froze.

Inside lay a tiny knitted blanket.

Blue with small white stars.

Her hands began to shake.

"I made this..."

She remembered staying awake for weeks during her pregnancy, knitting each stitch while Ethan read business reports beside the fireplace.

She pressed trembling fingers against the glass.

"They kept everything."

Ethan wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

"They wanted reminders."

"No," Amelia whispered.

"They wanted trophies."

Across the room, one of Alpha Team's operators called out.

"Sir!"

He held up a thick black ledger.

The title read:

FOUNDATION SEVEN: PROJECT HEIR

Hayes opened the first page.

His face drained of color.

"My God..."

Each chapter documented children from influential families.

Some had been declared dead.

Others reported as kidnapped.

A few had quietly "disappeared" during natural disasters.

Beside every child's name appeared a financial figure.

Payments.

Transfers.

New identities.

One note caught Ethan's attention.

SUBJECT L-07

Status: Alive

Asset Value: Control of Blackwood Trust

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Lily..."

Victor had never seen her as a child.

Only as an inheritance.

Another operator searched a locked cabinet.

Inside sat dozens of hard drives.

He connected one to a portable computer.

A folder appeared.

HOSPITAL FIRE - MASTER RECORDINGS

Security footage.

The original surveillance files.

Not the edited versions shown during the investigation.

Hayes clicked the first video.

The room fell silent.

The screen showed the maternity wing seven years earlier.

Smoke drifted through the corridor.

Doctors rushed newborns toward emergency exits.

Then Victor entered.

Calm.

Unhurried.

He unlocked a maintenance closet.

Removed a canister.

Poured liquid across the hallway floor.

Moments later...

He struck a lighter.

Flames exploded across the corridor.

Amelia closed her eyes.

Ethan couldn't.

He watched every second.

Every lie.

Every stolen year.

When the recording ended, nobody spoke.

There was no longer any doubt.

Victor hadn't benefited from the fire.

He had created it.

Suddenly, another operator shouted from the far side of the chamber.

"Sir... there's another room!"

Beyond the archive stood a reinforced glass office.

Unlike everything else, it remained powered.

Its computers were still running.

Ethan stepped inside.

The largest monitor displayed a family tree.

The Blackwood family.

Victor.

Ethan.

Amelia.

Lily.

Then...

Another name.

Daniel Blackwood

Date of birth.

Unknown.

Status.

CLASSIFIED

Ethan frowned.

"I don't know any Daniel Blackwood."

Amelia shook her head.

"Neither do I."

Hayes typed rapidly.

"No birth certificate."

"No death certificate."

"No public records."

"It's as if this person never existed."

Then a hidden audio file began playing automatically.

An elderly man's voice filled the room.

Ethan recognized it instantly.

His father.

"If you are hearing this..."

"...then Victor has failed to destroy the truth."

Ethan's heart pounded.

"I recorded this on the day Lily was born."

"If anything happens to me..."

"...everything you need is inside Vault Seven."

The recording paused briefly.

"I always suspected my brother."

"But I never imagined how far he would go."

Then came the sentence that froze everyone.

"Victor was never my only brother."

The room went completely silent.

"There was another."

"His name was Daniel."

"We believed he died as a child."

"But twenty years ago..."

"...I discovered he was alive."

Hayes looked up slowly.

"What?"

The recording continued.

"If Victor ever learns Daniel survived..."

"...he will kill him."

A warning siren interrupted the message.

120 SECONDS REMAINING.

The floor lurched violently.

Cabinets toppled.

Glass shattered.

The archive was beginning to collapse.

Ethan quickly removed the hard drives and the ledger from the shelves.

"Take everything you can carry!"

Alpha Team stuffed files into waterproof evidence bags.

Hayes unplugged the server drives.

Amelia carefully lifted the knitted blanket from the display case.

"I won't leave this behind again."

Meanwhile...

Victor sprinted through the collapsing tunnels.

His suit was covered in dust.

Blood trickled from a cut above his eyebrow.

He ignored the pain.

Ahead, the entrance to Vault Seven came into view.

The massive steel door stood open.

Too late.

He drew a pistol.

Not because he believed he could recover the evidence.

Because there was still one thing he could destroy.

Ethan.

He stepped into the entrance corridor.

Raised the weapon.

And through the drifting dust, he saw Ethan emerging from the vault carrying the black ledger.

The two men locked eyes for the first time in seven years.

Neither spoke.

Neither lowered their gaze.

Victor slowly cocked the pistol.

Ethan pushed Amelia gently behind him.

The countdown echoed one final time through the collapsing underground complex.

"60 SECONDS REMAINING."
