Chapter 3: The Fire That Never Ended

The first explosion had been a distraction.
The second had been a warning.
The third was the real attack.
The underground parking garage trembled as reinforced steel doors slammed shut, trapping Victor's escape vehicles inside. Dust rained from the concrete ceiling while emergency lights painted the corridors in flashes of crimson.
Victor Blackwood didn't panic.
He calculated.
He had spent his entire life surviving by thinking three moves ahead.
"Ethan," he murmured with a cold smile. "You've finally become dangerous."
He slipped a small black device from his jacket and pressed a hidden button.
Far beneath the rehabilitation center, a concealed elevator began descending toward an underground command room that had never appeared on a single blueprint.
If Ethan wanted a war...
Victor would decide the battlefield.
Outside, rain lashed across the convoy.
Ethan watched the drone feed without blinking.
The diversion had worked perfectly.
Nearly every armed guard had abandoned the east wing.
Only four remained near Amelia's room.
"Alpha Team," Ethan ordered through his headset.
"Advance."
Four black-clad operators disappeared into the forest.
They moved without a sound, their night-vision goggles glowing faintly beneath the storm.
Hayes glanced toward Ethan.
"You planned this before we even left the mansion."
"I planned for Victor to expect the obvious."
"And?"
"So we did the opposite."
Inside Room 318...
Amelia heard the explosions.
For the first time in seven years...
Hope sounded loud enough to shake the walls.
Victor noticed the change in her expression.
"You think he's here."
"I know he is."
Victor walked closer.
"You always believed Ethan could save everyone."
"He couldn't even save you."
Amelia met his gaze.
"He never stopped trying."
Victor's smile disappeared.
That sentence hurt more than he expected.
Because it was true.
Even after seven years...
Ethan had never remarried.
Never dismantled Amelia's art studio.
Never touched the nursery.
Every anniversary of the fire, he disappeared alone until sunrise.
Victor had mocked him for it.
Now he realized something.
Love had kept Ethan alive.
And that made him unpredictable.
The hallway outside erupted in gunfire.
Suppressors reduced the shots to muted cracks.
One guard fell.
Then another.
The remaining two barely managed to raise their rifles before darkness swallowed them.
Alpha Team reached Room 318.
The team leader counted silently.
Three...
Two...
One...
The reinforced door exploded inward.
"Clear!"
The room was empty.
Only torn restraints remained attached to the hospital bed.
The IV lines still swayed.
Warm.
Recent.
Ethan entered seconds later.
His eyes swept every corner.
Nothing.
Hayes checked the heart monitor.
"Disconnected less than two minutes ago."
Ethan clenched his jaw.
"We missed them."
The drone operator interrupted through the radio.
"Sir."
"I've lost Victor."
"He's disappeared from every camera."
Meanwhile...
Thirty meters beneath the building...
Victor guided Amelia through a dim concrete tunnel.
Her wrists were bound.
She stumbled with every step.
Years of weakness had stolen her strength, but not her determination.
"You won't escape forever," she said.
Victor laughed quietly.
"I don't need forever."
"I only need tomorrow."
"The board meeting."
Victor nodded.
"Exactly."
"If Ethan arrives without proof..."
"...he'll look like a grieving husband chasing ghosts."
"And if he brings Lily?"
Victor stopped walking.
His eyes narrowed.
"So she remembers her name."
Amelia smiled despite the pain.
"She's smarter than you thought."
Victor sighed.
"That child has become... inconvenient."
Back above ground...
Lily sat inside the armored SUV, wrapped in a warm blanket.
She stared at the rehabilitation center through rain-covered glass.
Something felt wrong.
Very wrong.
She closed her eyes.
Fragments of memories surfaced.
A long hallway.
White walls.
A humming elevator.
A man carrying her while she pretended to sleep.
Then...
A red light.
A painted number.
Seven.
Her eyes flew open.
"Daddy!"
Ethan turned instantly.
"What is it?"
"They're underground!"
The room fell silent.
"What did you say?"
"I remember."
"There was an elevator."
"No buttons."
"Only a little silver key."
Hayes frowned.
"Hidden elevator?"
Lily nodded rapidly.
"It smelled funny."
"Like medicine."
"And wet rocks."
The security chief looked toward Ethan.
"There are no underground levels on the blueprints."
Victor had erased them.
Ethan's eyes drifted to the brass key Lily had found.
Vault Seven.
Key Seven.
Elevator Seven.
Too many coincidences.
"There has to be another entrance."
One of the operators approached.
"Sir."
"We found something."
He handed Ethan an old maintenance map recovered from a storage office.
Most of it had been burned.
Except one handwritten note.
Beneath the building...
An abandoned emergency tunnel built decades earlier.
Officially sealed.
Unofficially...
No one knew.
Hayes traced the faded line.
"If this connects..."
"...it leads beneath the mountain."
Ethan nodded.
"Split the teams."
"Alpha keeps searching the hospital."
"Bravo comes with me."
Far below...
Victor and Amelia reached a massive steel door.
He inserted a security card.
The lock disengaged with a heavy metallic click.
Beyond it stretched an underground laboratory unlike anything Amelia remembered.
Rows of servers blinked endlessly.
Medical equipment lined the walls.
Shelves held hundreds of patient files.
Photographs.
DNA reports.
Birth certificates.
Fake identities.
Children.
Dozens of children.
Amelia stopped walking.
"What is this?"
Victor didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked proudly across the room.
"My insurance policy."
She stared at the files.
Every folder belonged to a missing child.
Some had disappeared years ago.
Others only months.
A chill spread through her body.
"You..."
Victor smiled.
"The wealthy always want heirs."
"They simply don't ask enough questions."
Amelia felt sick.
"You sold children."
"I created opportunities."
"You destroyed families."
"I built fortunes."
Her eyes suddenly caught something across the room.
A photograph.
Small.
Faded.
A little girl smiling while holding a yellow stuffed rabbit.
Lily.
The date beneath it read:
Age: 3 years, 2 months.
Amelia's heart nearly stopped.
For years...
Victor had documented every stage of Lily's life.
Watching.
Waiting.
Planning.
At that same moment...
One of Ethan's operators entered the laboratory from a forgotten maintenance shaft.
He froze.
His breathing quickened.
His camera transmitted everything live.
Rows upon rows of missing children's files.
Evidence of crimes spanning decades.
The operator whispered into his microphone.
"Sir..."
"You need to see this."
Before anyone could answer...
A hand slowly rested on his shoulder.
Victor's voice echoed through the darkness.
"I was wondering..."
"...how long it would take you to find my real business."
The operator spun around.
Too late.
The lights went out.
May you like
A single gunshot echoed through the underground labyrinth.
Then silence.
