Chapter 4: The Labyrinth Below

The gunshot echoed through the underground corridors.
Then came silence.
Not the comforting silence of safety.
The suffocating silence that follows when everyone is waiting to discover who is still alive.
Above ground, Ethan's earpiece crackled.
"Bravo Three!"
No response.
"Bravo Three, report!"
Only static answered.
The security chief looked toward Ethan.
"We lost his signal."
Ethan's expression hardened.
"Can you locate his tracker?"
A technician worked furiously over the tablet.
"Still transmitting..."
"...but it isn't moving."
Hayes lowered his eyes.
"That's not a good sign."
Ethan didn't reply.
He simply reached for the rifle slung across his back.
For seven years, Victor had controlled the game.
Tonight, that ended.
Nearly forty meters underground...
Bravo Three lay behind a concrete pillar, clutching his shoulder.
The bullet had torn through his tactical vest but missed his heart by inches.
Blood soaked the fabric beneath his arm.
He bit down hard to stop himself from crying out.
The darkness around him was absolute.
Victor had shut off the entire power grid.
Only emergency exit lights glowed faintly every twenty meters.
He slowly raised his helmet camera.
Nothing.
Then...
Footsteps.
Measured.
Unhurried.
Victor wasn't running.
He was hunting.
Bravo Three held his breath.
The footsteps came closer.
Closer.
Then stopped.
Victor spoke into the darkness.
"I know you're alive."
Silence.
"I never miss by accident."
Still nothing.
"I wanted you to survive."
Bravo Three tightened his grip on the pistol.
Victor continued.
"So you could tell Ethan something."
Elsewhere in the underground complex...
Amelia had been locked inside a reinforced medical room.
Victor believed the restraints on her wrists would be enough.
He underestimated seven years of determination.
She studied the room carefully.
Every prison had a weakness.
A cracked cabinet.
Loose wiring.
An overlooked tool.
Her eyes settled on the metal IV stand beside the bed.
Heavy.
Solid.
She quietly pulled it toward herself.
The movement hurt.
Her muscles trembled from years of weakness.
But they obeyed.
With careful precision, she wedged the hook beneath the chain binding her wrists.
She pulled.
Nothing.
Again.
The metal groaned.
A third time.
CRACK.
One cuff snapped open.
Amelia stared at her freed hand.
For the first time in seven years...
She was no longer a prisoner.
Back in the tunnel...
Ethan reached the abandoned maintenance shaft with Alpha Team.
A rusted steel hatch blocked the entrance.
The old maintenance map had been accurate.
He inserted the brass key Lily had found.
It didn't fit.
Hayes frowned.
"The wrong lock?"
Ethan examined the hatch more closely.
Then noticed something carved into the metal.
A tiny crescent moon.
Exactly like Lily's birthmark.
He turned the key upside down.
This time...
Click.
The ancient lock released.
The heavy hatch slowly swung inward.
Cold air rushed upward.
The tunnel beneath stretched into darkness.
Hayes looked surprised.
"Lily opened the only door that mattered."
Back in the SUV...
Lily couldn't sit still.
She stared at the rain outside.
Her heartbeat grew faster.
Someone was calling her.
Not with words.
With memory.
A soft melody drifted into her mind.
A lullaby.
Her mother used to hum it before bedtime.
She suddenly remembered another detail.
A room filled with stars.
Not real stars.
Glow-in-the-dark stickers covering a ceiling.
She gasped.
"There was another room!"
One of the guards leaned closer.
"What room?"
"The pretty room."
"The one with stars."
"They kept me there when I was little."
"What else?"
"There was a teddy bear..."
"...and a blue door..."
"...with the number twelve."
The guard immediately relayed the information.
Ethan heard it through his headset.
"Blue Door Twelve."
Hayes opened the maintenance map again.
"There are numbered storage rooms underground."
He traced one corridor.
"Room Twelve..."
His finger stopped.
"...connects directly to the laboratory."
Ethan looked at Alpha Team.
"We're close."
Meanwhile...
Victor entered the surveillance center.
Dozens of security monitors displayed every corridor beneath the facility.
He watched Ethan's team moving through Tunnel Seven.
Exactly where he wanted them.
One of his men approached nervously.
"Sir."
"They've breached the maintenance entrance."
Victor nodded.
"Seal every exit behind them."
"What about us?"
"We leave through the western passage."
The guard hesitated.
"And the evidence?"
Victor smiled.
"There won't be any."
He opened a biometric safe.
Inside rested a single red switch beneath a transparent cover.
The words beneath it read:
FOUNDATION PURGE SYSTEM
The guard's eyes widened.
"Sir..."
"If you activate that..."
"The entire underground level will collapse."
Victor calmly lifted the cover.
"If I cannot own the truth..."
"...no one will."
At that exact moment...
Amelia slipped into the hallway outside her room.
She moved slowly, using the wall for support.
Every step felt like climbing a mountain.
Then she heard voices around the corner.
Victor.
And another guard.
She quietly peered through the doorway.
Victor's hand hovered above a red switch.
She couldn't hear every word.
Only one sentence.
"Five minutes."
Then everything disappears.
Amelia's heart pounded.
If that switch was activated...
Ethan.
Lily.
Everyone underground...
Would die.
She glanced around desperately.
Across the hallway hung a red emergency fire axe inside a glass cabinet.
Her breathing quickened.
She hadn't run in seven years.
She wasn't even sure she could stand.
But she knew one thing with absolute certainty.
She would rather die trying...
...than lose her family a second time.
Gripping the IV stand like a spear, Amelia took her first unsteady step toward Victor.
Neither Victor...
May you like
Nor his guards...
Had noticed her yet.
