Chapter 1: The Woman on the Screen

The image on the phone froze the world around Ethan Blackwood.

His breathing became shallow.

Every instinct told him the footage had to be fake.

Yet every detail contradicted that hope.

The scar above Amelia's left eyebrow.

The tiny silver ring she had refused to remove even during pregnancy.

The pale blue blanket she always insisted hospitals used because it reminded her of the ocean.

No technology could fabricate memories.

No stranger could imitate the countless details only a husband would recognize.

"Where did you get this?" Ethan whispered.

Lily wrapped both hands around the phone before answering.

"Aunt Nora gave it back after she forgot to lock the drawer."

"When?"

"Yesterday."

Ethan looked at Nora.

She no longer fought the security guards.

She simply cried.

"I couldn't keep lying anymore."

"You've lied for seven years."

"I know."

"And now my wife is alive?"

Nora nodded weakly.

"I think so."

"You think?"

"I haven't seen her myself in almost a year."

The words ignited something terrifying inside Ethan.

Victor had moved Amelia.

Again.

Dr. Samuel Hayes stepped closer.

"Mr. Blackwood..."

Ethan never looked away from the phone.

"Trace the signal."

"The video isn't recorded."

"I know."

"It's streaming."

Hayes stared at the screen.

"The latency is almost nonexistent."

"So find her."

Within seconds, Ethan's cybersecurity team rushed into the study carrying laptops and portable antennas.

One technician plugged the phone into specialized forensic equipment.

His fingers danced across the keyboard.

The room remained silent except for rapid typing.

Thirty seconds.

One minute.

Then...

"I've got multiple relay servers."

Another pause.

"They're bouncing through Europe."

A third technician interrupted.

"Wait."

"There's a hidden metadata packet."

Everyone leaned closer.

"It wasn't encrypted correctly."

He zoomed in.

Latitude.

Longitude.

A private rehabilitation center.

Less than thirty kilometers outside the city.

Ethan grabbed his car keys.

"We leave now."

Dr. Hayes blocked his path.

"If Victor planned your murder tonight..."

"I know."

"He expects you to come."

"I know."

"It could be an ambush."

Ethan looked toward Lily.

She still stood barefoot in her yellow pajamas.

She had risked everything to save him.

If he delayed...

Victor might finish what he started.

"No."

His voice became steel.

"If Amelia is alive..."

"I'm not waiting another minute."

Across the room, Lily suddenly tugged his sleeve.

"Daddy."

The word hit harder this time.

Not because she said it.

Because it felt natural.

She pointed at the phone.

"Look."

Victor had entered the hospital room.

The camera angle barely captured him.

He checked Amelia's pulse.

Looked around.

Then leaned close enough for the microphone to catch his voice.

"You've survived much longer than expected."

Ethan clenched his fists.

Victor smiled.

"Don't worry."

"Your husband will be dead before sunrise."

"Then there's no reason to keep you breathing either."

He raised the syringe.

The feed abruptly ended.

Black.

"No!"

Lily cried.

The technician hit several keys.

"Signal lost."

Ethan turned toward the security chief.

"Assemble everyone."

"Armed?"

"Everyone."

Within three minutes the underground garage erupted into motion.

Black SUVs rolled into formation.

Former military personnel loaded equipment.

Bulletproof vests.

Encrypted radios.

Medical kits.

The operation resembled a tactical military deployment rather than a family rescue.

Hayes walked beside Ethan.

"I called the police."

"No."

"Ethan—"

"No."

"They'll alert Victor."

"They don't know the location."

"They don't need to."

Victor had spent seven years manipulating politicians, executives, and investigators.

Ethan trusted only one circle now.

His own people.

Before leaving, Ethan knelt before Lily.

"I'm taking you somewhere safe."

"I want to help Mommy."

"You already did."

"No."

She shook her head.

"He doesn't know."

"Know what?"

She hesitated.

Then reached into her pajama pocket again.

Another surprise.

This time...

A tiny brass key.

Nora gasped.

"No..."

Lily looked confused.

"I found it inside the doll."

"What doll?"

"The one Uncle Victor gave me."

Nora's face turned ghost white.

"Oh God..."

Ethan stood.

"What is it?"

"Victor hides everything."

"What does this open?"

"I don't know."

"But if it's inside that doll..."

"...it's important."

Hayes examined it.

"Swiss cut."

"Custom made."

"Definitely not a house key."

The security chief interrupted through his earpiece.

"Vehicles ready."

Ethan pocketed the key.

"We move."

Rain began falling as the convoy sped into the night.

Lightning illuminated empty highways.

Lily sat quietly beside Ethan in the armored SUV.

She watched raindrops race down the window.

After several minutes she spoke.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"Were you sad?"

He swallowed.

"Every day."

"For Mommy?"

"For both of you."

She looked down.

"I dreamed about you."

"You did?"

"I didn't know your face."

"But I knew someone was looking for me."

Ethan's chest tightened.

He gently took her small hand.

"I never stopped."

She smiled for the first time.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Meanwhile...

Thirty kilometers away.

Victor Blackwood stood beside Amelia's bed.

The syringe remained untouched.

His phone vibrated.

One message.

FAILED.

Victor's smile disappeared.

He slowly looked toward the security monitor.

Every camera outside the rehabilitation center suddenly displayed the same image.

Black SUVs approaching.

Fast.

Very fast.

Victor whispered one word.

"Ethan."

Another guard entered.

"They're less than five minutes away."

Victor calmly placed the syringe back into its case.

"No panic."

"Activate Protocol Twelve."

"What about the woman?"

Victor looked at Amelia.

Still unconscious.

Still breathing.

Still dangerous.

"No loose ends."

The guard nodded.

He pulled a pistol from beneath his jacket.

Victor stopped him.

"No bullets."

"Too messy."

He handed over the syringe instead.

"Make it look peaceful."

The guard approached Amelia.

Three steps away.

Two.

One.

Then...

Her eyes opened.

Wide.

Alert.

Aware.

She looked directly at the man holding the syringe.

May you like

And whispered five words that made him freeze.

"I remember everything, Victor."
