Chapter 14: The Last Truth

The beam from the lighthouse continued sweeping across the sea.

Every rotation carried the same silent message.

We are still here.

Outside, the coastline awakened.

Fishing boats cut through the waves.

Coast Guard vessels accelerated toward the peninsula.

The two naval patrol ships closed the distance, their blue emergency lights flashing against the dark water.

For the first time in decades...

Victor Blackwood found himself surrounded.

Inside the lighthouse, the firefight came to an abrupt halt.

The mercenaries glanced nervously at one another.

Their earpieces crackled with overlapping reports.

"Sir..."

"Multiple vessels approaching."

"Thermal signatures increasing."

"Helicopters inbound."

Victor remained perfectly calm.

Fear had never been his weakness.

Adaptation had always been his greatest weapon.

He looked toward the spiral staircase.

"Fall back."

The mercenary commander frowned.

"We still outnumber them."

Victor smiled.

"Winning isn't about numbers."

"It's about leaving before someone else writes the ending."

The mercenaries immediately began withdrawing down the staircase.

Maria noticed the sudden silence.

"They're retreating."

Alpha Team's commander shook his head.

"No."

"They're changing tactics."

Almost on cue, an explosion shook the lower floor.

The ancient lighthouse trembled violently.

Dust poured from the ceiling.

Hayes looked horrified.

"They're planting demolition charges."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"He wants to erase one last witness."

Ethan turned toward Alpha Team.

"Can you disarm them?"

The commander checked the building plans.

"If we reach the basement in time."

"How much time?"

Another explosion answered the question.

A support column cracked.

The commander looked grim.

"Maybe three minutes."

Without hesitation, Ethan grabbed a tactical flashlight.

"I'm going."

Maria stepped beside him.

"So am I."

Daniel shook his head.

"Victor wants you to chase him."

Ethan looked directly at the old man.

"If I let him leave..."

"He'll do this again."

Daniel sighed.

"I know."

The two men descended the spiral staircase, followed by Maria and two Alpha operators.

Every floor echoed with distant footsteps.

The mercenaries were retreating toward the tunnels beneath the lighthouse.

Exactly as Victor intended.

Meanwhile...

At the lantern room...

Amelia stood beside Daniel, watching the growing fleet offshore.

"You trusted people would come."

Daniel smiled.

"I trusted that someone still remembered what honor meant."

Amelia looked toward Lily's yellow rabbit resting in her hands.

"So much pain..."

"So many years..."

Daniel gently replied,

"Sometimes truth travels slowly."

"But once it arrives..."

"It never leaves."

Below...

Ethan reached the basement.

Old stone corridors stretched beneath the lighthouse.

Barrels.

Rusted machinery.

Forgotten supply rooms.

Then...

He found it.

Three military-grade explosive charges attached to the main support pillars.

A digital timer blinked.

02:11

Maria knelt beside one charge.

"I can disarm these."

"You learned explosives?"

"I worked bomb disposal before homicide."

She smiled briefly.

"I never thought those years would matter."

Suddenly...

A slow clap echoed through the darkness.

Victor stepped from the shadows.

His black coat was covered in dust.

The burns along his neck glowed under the emergency lights.

He carried no rifle.

Only a small revolver.

"You always surprise me, Ethan."

Ethan raised his weapon.

"It's over."

Victor laughed softly.

"People have been saying that to me for forty years."

The basement became silent.

Only the timer continued counting down.

01:54

Victor looked toward Maria.

"Detective."

"You should leave."

She answered without lowering her pistol.

"I've heard better advice."

Victor nodded politely.

"Probably."

His eyes returned to Ethan.

"You know..."

"I almost admired you."

Ethan remained silent.

"You built an empire."

"You stayed loyal."

"You loved one woman your entire life."

Victor smiled sadly.

"I never understood that."

Ethan finally spoke.

"That's why you lost."

Victor's smile disappeared.

"No."

"I lost because I trusted fear longer than love."

For the first time...

There was no arrogance in his voice.

Only exhaustion.

The countdown continued.

01:21

Victor slowly removed something from inside his coat.

Not a weapon.

A faded photograph.

It showed three boys standing beside their parents.

Daniel.

Victor.

Ethan's father.

Victor looked at the picture quietly.

"We weren't born monsters."

"No."

Ethan answered.

"But we choose who we become."

Victor nodded.

"You're right."

He folded the photograph carefully and slipped it back into his pocket.

Then, without warning...

One wounded mercenary burst through a side tunnel, panicked.

"Sir!"

"The Navy's surrounding the cliffs!"

"They're here!"

He raised his rifle wildly.

Not at Ethan.

At Maria.

Everything happened in an instant.

Victor turned.

Drew his revolver.

BANG!

The mercenary collapsed before firing a single shot.

Silence returned.

Everyone stared at Victor.

He looked down at the dead mercenary.

Then quietly said,

"I gave one order."

"Never harm civilians."

Maria lowered her weapon slightly, stunned.

Victor looked at Ethan one final time.

"Protect Lily."

"Better than I protected my own family."

Before anyone could react...

Victor turned and sprinted deeper into the underground passage.

Ethan chased him.

The tunnel opened onto a cliffside exit overlooking the raging ocean.

Victor stood at the edge.

Behind him...

The sea crashed against black rocks.

Ahead of him...

Police helicopters circled overhead.

Naval spotlights flooded the cliffs.

There was nowhere left to run.

Ethan stopped several meters away.

"It's finished."

Victor looked out over the ocean.

"I know."

He smiled faintly.

"Tell Daniel..."

"...I'm sorry."

Then...

Before Ethan could reach him...

Victor stepped backward off the cliff.

His figure disappeared into the crashing waves below.

The ocean swallowed him whole.

No scream.

No struggle.

Only darkness.

Far below, the tide rolled endlessly against the rocks.

Victor Blackwood was gone.

But whether the sea had claimed his life...

Or hidden his final escape...

May you like

No one could yet say.

End of Chapter 14.
