Chapter 11: The Man Who Refused to Die

The cottage fell silent.
Only the roar of the ocean broke the stillness.
Daniel's whisper lingered in the air.
"Victor lived."
Ethan stepped toward the window.
Five black SUVs formed a semicircle around the lighthouse.
At least twenty armed mercenaries spread across the rocky ground with disciplined precision.
They weren't rushing.
They weren't nervous.
They were sealing every escape.
Alpha Team immediately took defensive positions.
"Perimeter established."
"Thermals show twenty-three hostiles."
"No visual confirmation of Victor."
Maria Alvarez checked the magazine in her pistol.
"They came prepared."
Ethan's eyes remained fixed on the convoy.
"No."
"They came expecting us."
Outside...
The leader of the mercenaries raised a loudspeaker.
"Mr. Ethan Blackwood."
"We're not here for you."
A pause.
"We're here for Daniel."
Daniel let out a quiet sigh.
"I was afraid of this."
Ethan turned.
"Who are they?"
Daniel looked older than ever.
"They're called The Custodians."
Hayes frowned.
"I've never heard of them."
"You weren't supposed to."
"They're not assassins."
"They're cleaners."
Maria narrowed her eyes.
"Cleaners?"
Daniel nodded.
"When powerful people create disasters..."
"...The Custodians erase the evidence."
The loudspeaker echoed again.
"Daniel."
"You have one minute."
"Walk outside."
"No one else dies."
Alpha Team's commander shook his head.
"They're bluffing."
Daniel slowly closed the curtains.
"No."
"They never bluff."
Ethan looked directly at Daniel.
"Tell me everything."
The old man hesitated.
Then nodded.
"Forty years ago..."
"...Victor wasn't acting alone."
The room became perfectly still.
"He answered to people richer than our family."
"Families whose names never appeared in newspapers."
"Industrial dynasties."
"Political bloodlines."
"International financiers."
"Foundation Seven wasn't their first project."
"It was merely one branch."
Hayes whispered,
"How large are we talking?"
Daniel answered quietly.
"Larger than governments."
Maria stared at him.
"Why didn't you tell anyone?"
Daniel smiled sadly.
"I tried."
"They killed every person who listened."
The mercenary leader fired a single shot into the air.
BANG!
"Thirty seconds."
Alpha Team prepared for combat.
One operator whispered,
"They're moving snipers onto the cliffs."
Another checked the drone feed.
"I count four."
"No..."
"Five."
Ethan studied the screen.
Professional positioning.
Military spacing.
No wasted movement.
"They're ex-special forces."
Maria nodded.
"I agree."
Daniel walked toward the fireplace.
From beneath a loose floorboard he removed a sealed metal box.
He handed it to Ethan.
"If I don't survive..."
"...protect this."
Ethan opened the box.
Inside rested three items.
A USB drive.
A handwritten journal.
A small velvet pouch.
He opened the pouch.
Inside lay an old signet ring engraved with the Blackwood crest.
Daniel smiled.
"Our father's."
"It proves who I am."
Hayes examined the USB drive.
"What's on this?"
Daniel's expression darkened.
"The complete client list."
Silence.
Even Maria stopped breathing.
"The client list?"
Daniel nodded.
"Everyone who paid Foundation Seven."
"Every child."
"Every transaction."
"Every politician."
"Every judge."
"Every billionaire."
Hayes looked horrified.
"My God..."
The loudspeaker interrupted again.
"Ten seconds."
Daniel suddenly looked toward Ethan.
"I need you to promise me something."
"What?"
"If Victor is alive..."
"...don't hate him."
Everyone stared.
Maria blinked.
"Excuse me?"
Daniel smiled sadly.
"Hatred is exactly what he spent his life planting."
"Don't let him harvest it."
Without warning...
Daniel walked toward the front door.
Ethan grabbed his arm.
"No."
"They'll kill you."
Daniel gently removed Ethan's hand.
"They're already prepared to kill everyone."
"If I go outside..."
"...you'll have time."
He looked at Amelia.
"Take Lily far away."
Then at Ethan.
"Be a father before you're a chairman."
He opened the door.
The cold sea wind rushed inside.
Daniel stepped onto the porch alone.
The mercenary leader lowered his rifle.
"Mr. Blackwood."
Daniel smiled faintly.
"You know who I am."
The man nodded respectfully.
"Please come with us."
Daniel looked toward the lighthouse one last time.
Then something caught his eye.
Far beyond the mercenary convoy...
Half hidden among the cliffs...
A lone figure stood watching.
Black coat.
Silver cane.
Burn scars climbing the left side of his neck.
Victor.
Alive.
Their eyes met across the distance.
Victor smiled.
Then tipped his hat.
Daniel whispered to himself,
"You survived."
Victor quietly spoke into a radio.
The mercenary leader received the transmission.
His expression changed instantly.
He raised his rifle.
Not at Daniel.
At the cottage.
"Kill everyone."
May you like
The first bullet shattered the front window.
The siege had begun.
