Chapter 12: The Siege at Blackstone Lighthouse

The first bullet exploded through the cottage window.
Glass burst across the wooden floor.
Daniel instinctively threw himself sideways as Alpha Team returned fire.
The quiet lighthouse became a battlefield.
"Contact front!"
"Two o'clock!"
"Sniper on the ridge!"
Three suppressed rifles answered almost simultaneously.
One mercenary collapsed before he reached cover.
Another rolled behind an SUV.
The remaining attackers spread into disciplined formations.
They weren't charging.
They were tightening a noose.
Inside the cottage, Ethan pulled Amelia behind a stone fireplace.
"Stay down!"
Maria Alvarez slid beside a shattered window and fired twice.
A mercenary's rifle flew from his hands.
"They're testing our defenses," she shouted.
"They want us boxed in!"
Hayes was already opening the metal box Daniel had given Ethan.
"If we're going to die here..."
"...I want to know what Victor protected."
He connected the USB drive to a rugged military laptop.
A password prompt appeared.
ACCESS CODE REQUIRED
Hayes frowned.
"No password."
"No files."
Nothing.
Daniel, crouched behind an overturned table, glanced at the screen.
"The code..."
"...isn't a number."
"It's a sentence."
"What sentence?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Our mother used to say it every Christmas."
He whispered,
"A family is measured by love, not blood."
Hayes typed the phrase.
The screen paused.
Then unlocked.
Hundreds of encrypted folders filled the display.
Each folder carried the name of a different family.
Some belonged to politicians.
Others to industrial empires.
International banks.
Royal foundations.
Media conglomerates.
Hayes' face drained of color.
"This isn't national."
"It's global."
Maria leaned closer.
"My God..."
One folder immediately caught Ethan's attention.
BLACKWOOD
He opened it.
Dozens of scanned documents appeared.
Birth certificates.
DNA reports.
Financial transfers.
Then...
One file named:
PROJECT PHOENIX
Ethan clicked it.
A confidential memorandum filled the screen.
Objective: Maintain control of strategic family assets through staged deaths, identity replacement, and inheritance manipulation.
Below the heading sat a list of "active subjects."
Amelia.
Lily.
Daniel.
Victor.
And...
Ethan.
"What is this?" Amelia whispered.
Daniel answered quietly.
"It means none of us were accidents."
Victor hadn't simply wanted the Blackwood fortune.
The Blackwood family had been an experiment.
Outside...
Victor watched the firefight through binoculars from a cliff nearly half a kilometer away.
His burn scars twisted when he smiled.
A young mercenary approached him.
"Sir."
"They're holding."
Victor lowered the binoculars.
"I expected they would."
"What are your orders?"
Victor looked toward the lighthouse.
"Not yet."
The young man hesitated.
"You said the archive was destroyed."
Victor smiled.
"It was."
"But Daniel always keeps copies."
Back inside...
The laptop suddenly chimed.
A hidden video file had begun playing automatically.
An elderly man appeared on screen.
Ethan recognized him instantly.
His grandfather.
Unlike the earlier recording, this one had never been edited.
"If you are seeing this..."
"...then Victor has failed."
The old man's voice remained calm.
"I created Foundation Seven."
Silence.
Nobody moved.
Amelia slowly looked toward Ethan.
Hayes stared at the screen in disbelief.
"What..."
The recording continued.
"I created it to protect children during political unrest."
"But Victor transformed it into something monstrous."
Daniel lowered his head.
"I tried to stop him."
"I failed."
The old man sighed deeply.
"If history repeats itself..."
"...remember this."
"The greatest inheritance is never money."
"It is the courage to end what your own family began."
The video ended.
No one spoke.
A sudden explosion rocked the cottage.
The back wall collapsed inward.
Dust swallowed the room.
"RPG!" Alpha Team shouted.
"They've got rockets!"
Wooden beams crashed from the ceiling.
The cottage would not survive another hit.
Ethan looked around quickly.
"The lighthouse."
Maria nodded immediately.
"It's stone."
"Better defensible."
Alpha Team began moving everyone toward the rear exit.
Daniel paused.
"No."
Everyone stopped.
"What?"
Daniel pointed toward the journal.
"Take that."
"And the ring."
"But leave the laptop."
Hayes frowned.
"Why?"
Daniel smiled faintly.
"Because Victor expects us to protect the evidence."
Ethan understood immediately.
"A decoy."
Daniel nodded.
They left the computer running on the table.
The USB drive remained connected.
From a distance...
It appeared untouched.
The group sprinted through the rain toward the lighthouse.
Bullets sparked against wet stone.
One operator fell, hit in the leg.
Another carried him without breaking stride.
As Ethan reached the heavy iron door, Amelia looked back.
Smoke poured from the cottage roof.
Then...
Three mercenaries stormed inside.
Seconds later...
A massive explosion tore the building apart.
Victor watched through binoculars.
The cottage vanished in flames.
He smiled.
"They're dead."
Then one of his snipers spoke urgently over the radio.
"Negative!"
"They're moving!"
Victor raised the binoculars again.
His smile faded.
Ethan.
Amelia.
Daniel.
Maria.
Alpha Team.
All racing toward the lighthouse.
Victor's eyes narrowed.
"So..."
"...Round Two."
High above the crashing waves, the ancient lighthouse door slammed shut behind them.
As Ethan turned the massive iron locking wheel, Daniel looked up the spiral staircase disappearing into darkness.
His voice became almost a whisper.
May you like
"There's something at the top..."
"...that Victor never found."
