Chapter 7 - The Ledger With Her NameA Secret Buried Under the MansionThe Harrison estate looked different when Amara returned.

Darker.

Colder.

The security gates were open.

No guards stood outside.

That was the first thing that frightened Daniel.

“Something is wrong,” he said.

Amara stared at the house.

“My father wants me here.”

“He wants the ledger.”

“And?”

“He wants you here because he knows I will follow.”

The front door opened by itself.

Amara swallowed.

They stepped inside.

“Dad?”

No answer.

The house was silent.

Daniel checked the hallway.

“Stay behind me.”

Amara frowned.

“You don't get to order me around.”

“Fine.”

He handed her a weapon.

She stared at it.

“You carry this?”

“Sometimes.”

“Of course you do.”

They moved deeper into the house.

The study door was open.

Amara entered first.

Her father's desk was empty.

Then she saw an envelope.

Her name was written across it.

AMARA.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph of her mother.

She stared.

Her mother had died when Amara was ten.

Beneath the photograph was a note.

Your mother knew the truth.

Amara's hands trembled.

“What truth?”

Daniel took the note.

He read the back.

His expression darkened.

“What?”

“This wasn't written by your father.”

“Then who?”

“The handwriting belongs to Sophia.”

Amara looked at him.

“Why would Sophia leave this here?”

Before Daniel could answer, the lights went out.

A gunshot exploded.

The bullet hit the wall beside Amara.

Daniel pulled her down.

“Stay low!”

Another shot.

Then silence.

Daniel moved toward the shooter.

Amara crawled behind the desk.

She found a hidden switch.

She pressed it.

A bookshelf moved.

Behind it was a narrow passage.

She looked at Daniel.

“Here!”

They entered the passage.

The door closed behind them.

They walked through a dark tunnel.

At the end was a steel room.

Inside stood shelves filled with documents.

Daniel stared.

“The ledger.”

Amara looked around.

“Where?”

Daniel pointed toward a safe.

Her father's initials were engraved on it.

He entered a code.

Wrong.

Again.

Wrong.

Amara remembered something.

“My mother used to say one thing every birthday.”

“What?”

“Your first memory is always your mother's secret.”

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Amara entered her mother's birthday.

The safe opened.

Inside was a thick black ledger.

Daniel slowly removed it.

The first page was covered in names.

Bankers.

Politicians.

Executives.

Judges.

Then Amara saw her own name.

She gasped.

“Why am I here?”

Daniel turned the page.

Her name was next to an account number.

And beneath it:

Beneficiary: Amara Harrison

Daniel went still.

“What?”

Amara looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

He flipped through several pages.

“This isn't an account for you.”

“Then what is it?”

“It is an inheritance.”

“From who?”

He stared at the final page.

Then looked at her.

“Your mother.”

Amara's eyes widened.

“My mother?”

“She left you controlling rights to a hidden trust.”

“How much?”

Daniel hesitated.

“How much?”

“More than your father's company.”

She couldn't breathe.

Daniel kept reading.

Then his face changed.

“What?”

He turned the ledger around.

The trust had one condition.

Amara had to be legally married.

She stared.

“Married?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel pointed to the next line.

Trust becomes active only after marriage to Daniel Williams.

Amara stepped backward.

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You're saying…”

“Your mother designed this.”

“But she died fifteen years ago.”

Daniel stared at the document.

“Before I met you.”

“Before I even knew you existed.”

Silence.

Suddenly, a voice echoed through the tunnel.

“Very good.”

Amara turned.

Her father stood at the entrance.

Edward Harrison.

He held a gun.

Daniel moved in front of Amara.

Edward smiled.

“I was wondering how long it would take you to find that.”

Amara stared.

“Dad…”

“You finally know why I forced you to marry him.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“You used her.”

Edward laughed.

“I protected my family.”

“You murdered people.”

Edward's eyes narrowed.

“Watch your mouth.”

Amara stepped forward.

“You knew about Mother's trust.”

“Of course.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because you would have chosen him for the money.”

Amara shook her head.

“I never even knew it existed.”

Edward's voice softened.

“That was the point.”

Daniel asked:

“What are you planning to do with the trust?”

Edward smiled.

“Nothing.”

He raised the gun.

“Because after tonight, Amara won't be the beneficiary anymore.”

A loud explosion shook the room.

The ceiling cracked.

Dust fell everywhere.

When Amara looked up, Edward was gone.

But the ledger was still in Daniel's hands.

And a single page had been torn out.

The page containing the name of the person who originally funded the trust.
