Chapter 1 - The Name on the CardThe Husband She Thought Was a BeggarAmara stared at the black business card in her trembling hand.

The gold letters seemed to burn into her eyes.
DANIEL WILLIAMS
CEO & FOUNDER
WILLIAMS GLOBAL HOLDINGS
She read it once.
Then again.
Then a third time.
“No…”
Her voice barely escaped her lips.
Daniel was a beggar.
That was what her father had told her.
That was the man she had been forced to marry after her father's financial empire collapsed under millions of dollars in debt.
A man in worn shoes.
A faded jacket.
Messy hair.
A cheap watch.
A face that looked tired and forgotten by the world.
A homeless man.
At least, that was what she had believed.
Amara rushed toward the front door.
“Daniel!”
No answer.
“Daniel!”
The housekeeper, Mrs. Grace, came running from the kitchen.
“Madam?”
“Where is my husband?”
Mrs. Grace hesitated.
“He left earlier.”
“When?”
“About twenty minutes ago.”
“Did he say where he was going?”
“No.”
Amara looked back at the card.
Her heartbeat became louder.
“Did you know?”
Mrs. Grace's face changed.
“Know what?”
“Who Daniel really is.”
Silence.
Mrs. Grace slowly lowered her eyes.
That was enough.
Amara stepped closer.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“Since when?”
Mrs. Grace swallowed.
“The first day he came here.”
Amara felt as though the floor had tilted beneath her.
“And you said nothing?”
“He told me not to.”
“Why?”
Mrs. Grace looked toward the hallway.
“Because he wanted to see how you treated him.”
The words struck harder than a slap.
Amara remembered every cold glance she had given Daniel.
Every time she had been embarrassed walking beside him.
Every time she had silently wondered why her father had forced her to marry a man who owned nothing.
And now she remembered something else.
Daniel had never once complained.
Not when Kevin insulted him.
Not when she avoided him.
Not even when she asked him whether he had ever had a real job.
He had simply smiled.
As if he knew something she didn't.
Her phone rang.
She nearly dropped it.
“Hello?”
“Madam Amara, this is Mr. Carter from Harrison Holdings.”
Her father's company.
“What happened?”
“Please come to the headquarters immediately.”
“Why?”
“We have a board emergency.”
“What does that have to do with me?”
The man hesitated.
“The new owner is about to address the board.”
Amara stared at the card.
“Who is the new owner?”
There was silence.
Then:
“Mr. Daniel Williams.”
Her fingers went numb.
“I'll be there.”
She hung up.
Twenty minutes later, Amara stepped into the headquarters of the company her father had built over thirty years.
The lobby was packed.
Executives whispered.
Employees stared.
Security guards stood in tense silence.
When Amara entered the executive floor, the atmosphere became even colder.
Her father's chief financial officer, Martin Cole, walked toward her.
“You shouldn't have come.”
“Why?”
He glanced around.
“Because this isn't your company anymore.”
Amara's jaw tightened.
“What happened?”
“Your father lost control.”
“Who bought it?”
Martin stared at her.
“You already know.”
Amara looked through the glass walls of the boardroom.
A man was sitting at the head of the table.
Black suit.
White shirt.
Silver cufflinks.
Back straight.
Calm posture.
He looked nothing like the man who had stood barefoot on her doorstep twenty-four hours earlier.
Then he turned.
Their eyes met.
Daniel.
Amara stopped breathing.
He slowly stood.
Every board member rose with him.
“Good morning, Mrs. Williams.”
Mrs. Williams.
Not Amara.
Not Madam.
Wife.
He walked toward her.
She stared at him in disbelief.
“You're the owner?”
Daniel looked at her calmly.
“Yes.”
“You bought my father's company?”
“Yes.”
“With what money?”
His lips curved slightly.
“My money.”
“You're a billionaire?”
“I never said I wasn't.”
“You let me think you were homeless.”
Daniel's smile disappeared.
“You assumed.”
Her eyes filled with anger.
“You deliberately dressed like that.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to me.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“I wanted to know who you were when you thought I had nothing.”
Amara's expression cracked.
Before she could answer, the boardroom doors opened.
Kevin Harrison stormed inside.
His face was pale with fury.
“You!”
Daniel looked at him.
Kevin pointed at him.
“You have been pretending to be a beggar!”
Daniel said nothing.
Kevin turned toward Amara.
“He fooled you.”
Amara's voice trembled.
“Kevin, stop.”
“No. You don't understand.”
Kevin threw a file onto the table.
“Look at this.”
Amara opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Daniel wearing the same old clothes.
Daniel sleeping in a cheap motel.
Daniel walking through streets alone.
Daniel entering a homeless shelter.
Kevin smiled triumphantly.
“See? I told you he was a fraud.”
Amara looked at Daniel.
Daniel remained calm.
Kevin continued.
“He has been hiding something much bigger.”
He leaned toward Amara.
“And I have proof.”
Daniel's eyes hardened.
“What proof?”
Kevin opened another file.
“The day your father forced Amara to marry you…”
He paused.
“…you were already in contact with Harrison Holdings.”
Daniel's face changed.
Just slightly.
But Amara saw it.
Kevin smiled.
“You didn't meet her by accident.”
Amara slowly turned toward Daniel.
“What is he talking about?”
Daniel didn't answer.
“Daniel.”
Silence.
“Did you know who I was before we married?”
Still nothing.
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“Did you?”
Daniel finally looked directly into her eyes.
“Yes.”
Amara stepped backward.
“How much did you know?”
Daniel's expression was unreadable.
“More than you think.”
Then the lights inside the boardroom suddenly went out.
Someone screamed.
When the emergency lights came on, the file on the table was gone.
And so was Daniel.
Amara looked around in panic.
Then her phone buzzed.
One message.
From an unknown number.
You married the richest man in the country. Unfortunately, that is not the most dangerous thing about him.
She stared at the screen.
A second message appeared.
Ask Daniel what happened to his first wife.
May you like
Amara's blood ran cold.
Daniel had never mentioned a first wife.
