Chapter 7 - Daniel ran upstairs.Evelyn followed.

Michael stayed behind.

“Where is she?” Daniel shouted.

A child's crying came from the bedroom.

They burst through the door.

Sophie was hiding beneath the bed.

“Daddy!”

Daniel dropped to his knees.

“I'm here.”

He pulled her into his arms.

She clung to him.

Then she looked at Evelyn.

“Who are you?”

Evelyn couldn't answer.

She stared into the little girl's face.

There was something devastatingly familiar about her.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

The way she looked at frightened people.

The way she clung to Daniel.

Evelyn suddenly understood why Michael had kept her hidden.

Sophie was leverage.

They moved through the house.

Daniel carried Sophie.

Evelyn followed.

Michael met them at the back door.

“Police are coming.”

Daniel stared.

“How do you know?”

Michael held up his phone.

“I called them.”

They reached the car.

A bullet struck the hood.

Michael pushed Evelyn down.

Daniel covered Sophie.

They waited.

Then silence.

The shooter was gone.

Hours later, police surrounded the house.

They found shell casings.

A suppressed rifle.

A surveillance camera hidden across the street.

The shooter had planned everything.

But they hadn't caught him.

And that was only the beginning.

At a safe house, Evelyn sat beside Sophie.

The child slept.

Daniel sat across the room.

Michael stood near the window.

Evelyn looked at him.

“Tell me everything.”

Michael nodded.

“My father wasn't a businessman.”

“What?”

“He was laundering money.”

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

“Through your company?”

“Yes.”

“And Victor?”

“A financier.”

“Olivia?”

“His daughter.”

Evelyn looked toward Sophie.

“And you?”

“I was supposed to inherit the operation.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“But you refused.”

Michael nodded.

“So they wanted you dead.”

“Yes.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Why did you marry me?”

Silence.

The question had finally come.

Michael turned.

“At first?”

“Yes.”

“At first, because Victor wanted access to your father.”

Evelyn felt sick.

“And later?”

Michael's eyes filled.

“Because I fell in love with you.”

She looked away.

“I don't believe you.”

“I know.”

He placed an old photograph on the table.

Evelyn picked it up.

It showed her and Michael on their first date.

She remembered that night.

He had been nervous.

She had laughed.

He had told her she was different.

She stared at the photograph.

“Was any of it real?”

“Yes.”

“All of it?”

“No.”

She looked up.

“That is the problem.”

Michael lowered his head.

Then Daniel entered.

“I found something.”

He handed Evelyn a folder.

Inside were police documents concerning her father's death.

One page had a handwritten note.

TOXICOLOGY ALTERED.

Evelyn's hands shook.

“Who wrote this?”

A forensic technician.

The technician had disappeared two weeks after the investigation closed.

Daniel pointed toward the bottom.

“Look at the date.”

Evelyn did.

It was December 18, 2021.

One day after the affair.

The same day she had been arrested.

“Someone reopened my father's case.”

Daniel nodded.

“Three years ago.”

“Who?”

“An investigator named Sarah Cole.”

“Where is she?”

“Dead.”

Evelyn stared.

“When?”

“Two days ago.”

Silence.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Three years after her conviction, people connected to the truth were dying.

One by one.

Daniel took another document from the folder.

“This was found in her house.”

It was a handwritten list.

Six names.

The first five had been crossed out.

The sixth was Evelyn.

Evelyn stared.

Below her name were three words.

FINAL WITNESS.
