Chapter 6 - Michael stood at the top of the stairs.Older.

Thinner.

But unmistakable.

Evelyn had imagined this moment for three years.

She imagined screaming.

Hitting him.

Demanding answers.

Instead, her body refused to move.

Michael stared at her.

Neither spoke.

Then his eyes dropped to Daniel.

“You should have stayed away.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where's Sophie?”

Michael glanced upstairs.

“Safe.”

“Where's Olivia?”

Michael's jaw tightened.

“She left.”

Evelyn finally spoke.

“Why?”

Michael looked at her.

She saw something she had never seen in his eyes before.

Fear.

“Because she betrayed me too.”

Evelyn almost laughed.

“You don't get to say that.”

Michael looked down.

“You think I wanted this?”

“You planned it.”

“Yes.”

The answer stunned her.

Michael continued.

“I planned for you to find Olivia.”

Daniel's hands clenched.

“You ruined her life.”

“I know.”

“You sent her to prison.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

Michael looked directly at Evelyn.

“To save her.”

Evelyn slapped him.

The sound echoed through the hallway.

Michael didn't resist.

“Don't ever tell yourself that you saved me.”

“I didn't.”

“Then why?”

He wiped blood from his lip.

“Because they were going to kill you.”

Evelyn froze.

“Who?”

“My partners.”

“Your partners?”

Michael nodded.

“The people controlling your father's money.”

Evelyn stared.

“You mean Olivia?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Michael said one name.

“Victor Bennett.”

Evelyn's stomach turned.

Olivia's father.

The man who had comforted her after her own father's death.

The man who had attended the wedding.

The man who had sent flowers to prison.

The man who had always called her daughter.

“Victor knew about the inheritance,” Michael said.

“He had known for years.”

“Why didn't he take it?”

“Because your father created a trust.”

Michael explained that Evelyn's father had suspected fraud.

He hid the investment network behind a series of companies.

Only Evelyn had ultimate ownership.

As long as she remained alive and mentally competent, nobody could access the assets.

Victor needed control.

He needed Evelyn declared incompetent.

And that required evidence.

Michael showed her the medical documents.

Forged psychiatric reports.

False statements.

Bank records altered to make Evelyn look financially reckless.

Everything had been prepared.

“Then why the affair?”

Evelyn demanded.

Michael looked away.

“Because I needed you to explode.”

“Why?”

“So the police would believe the story.”

Evelyn's chest tightened.

“You knew I would hit you.”

“I knew you were angry.”

“That isn't the same.”

“No.”

Michael's voice broke.

“I miscalculated.”

“Three years.”

“I know.”

“You knew I might go to prison.”

“I never thought they'd give you three years.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“But Olivia testified against her.”

Michael looked at him.

“She was threatened.”

“By Victor?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“So everybody had a reason.”

Michael stared at her.

“I wanted to stop it after you were arrested.”

“But you didn't.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Michael hesitated.

“Because by then, Victor had your company.”

Evelyn froze.

“My company?”

Michael nodded.

“The acquisition was fake.”

“What?”

“The twelve-million-dollar buyer wasn't a buyer.”

“It was a shell controlled by Victor.”

Evelyn felt dizzy.

“He wanted me to transfer ownership.”

“Yes.”

“And the prison sentence?”

“To make sure you couldn't fight.”

Evelyn stared at him.

For three years, she had believed she was being punished for losing control.

But she had been manipulated.

Used.

Exiled.

Then Michael said something else.

“There is one thing you don't know.”

“What?”

“The night your father died, I was there.”

Evelyn's blood went cold.

“What did you see?”

Michael looked toward the window.

“Victor was there.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“And?”

Michael swallowed.

“He wasn't alone.”

“Who was with him?”

Michael looked directly at Evelyn.

“Olivia.”

Evelyn's heart shattered.

The woman she had trusted for twenty-six years had not simply stolen her husband.

She might have helped kill her father.

Then a gunshot exploded downstairs.

The window beside Evelyn shattered.

Michael grabbed her and pulled her to the floor.

Daniel drew his gun.

A second shot tore through the wall.

Michael shouted:

“Get Sophie!”

May you like

And suddenly everyone realized the gunman wasn't there for them.

He was there for the little girl upstairs.
