Chapter 3 - The first thing Daniel did was lock the doors. The second thing he did was drive.

They said nothing for twenty minutes.

Evelyn stared at the photograph on her phone.

Her childhood home.

The yellow house where she had spent every summer with Olivia.

The house where they had sworn they would remain friends forever.

The house where Evelyn's father had died.

Someone had photographed it that morning.

Someone knew exactly where she had gone after leaving prison.

“Daniel.”

“Yeah?”

“Take me there.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“I said take me there.”

“They know you're going.”

“That's why I'm going.”

Daniel frowned.

“You think that's smart?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because I'm tired of being afraid of people I can't see.”

Daniel said nothing.

Twenty-five minutes later, they reached the house.

The property looked exactly as Evelyn remembered.

The white fence.

The old oak tree.

The cracked mailbox.

The flower bed where her father used to grow roses.

But something felt wrong.

The front door was unlocked.

Daniel immediately stepped in front of her.

“Stay behind me.”

They entered.

Dust covered the furniture.

Nobody had lived there for years.

Evelyn walked through the hallway.

Every room held a memory.

Her father's office.

Her old bedroom.

The kitchen where Olivia used to sleep during school vacations.

Evelyn stopped.

“Olivia stayed here more than anyone.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Did you ever suspect her?”

“No.”

“Not once?”

“No.”

“What about Michael?”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I thought I knew him too.”

They reached the basement.

Evelyn remembered her father rarely allowed anyone downstairs.

Daniel switched on the lights.

Nothing.

Then Evelyn noticed a loose wooden panel.

She crouched.

Behind it was a metal box.

Locked.

Daniel looked at her.

“Any idea what's inside?”

“No.”

He pulled out a small tool.

After several minutes, the lock snapped.

Inside was a stack of documents.

And an old cassette tape.

Evelyn stared.

“What is that?”

Daniel lifted the tape.

A label was written across it.

FOR EVELYN.

Her heart began pounding.

“My father?”

“I think so.”

They found an old cassette player upstairs.

Daniel inserted the tape.

Static filled the room.

Then a man's voice emerged.

Evelyn stopped breathing.

Her father's voice.

“If you're hearing this, Evelyn, something has gone wrong.”

She covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

“I don't know when you'll find this.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But if you're hearing it, someone has discovered what I found.”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

Her father's voice became quieter.

“Trust no one connected to the Bennett family.”

Evelyn's heart stopped.

Olivia's family.

The tape crackled.

“I made one mistake. I trusted people because they shared our name.”

A pause.

“Your mother used to say that money changes people.”

Evelyn whispered:

“What did you find?”

The tape answered.

“Fraud.”

Daniel's expression changed.

Her father continued.

“An organized scheme involving companies, property, and forged identities.”

Evelyn stared at the cassette player.

“And one of the people involved is someone Evelyn considers family.”

The tape clicked.

Silence.

Daniel looked at her.

Then the recording restarted.

A woman's voice appeared.

Olivia.

Young.

Maybe twenty years old.

“Everything is ready.”

Evelyn staggered backward.

“No.”

Olivia's voice continued.

“The account is under her father's name. She'll never notice.”

A man's voice answered.

Michael.

Older than his voice on the recording, but unmistakable.

“What about Evelyn?”

Olivia laughed.

“She trusts me.”

Daniel stopped the tape.

Silence filled the room.

Evelyn stared at him.

“Play it.”

Daniel didn't move.

“Play it.”

He pressed the button.

Michael's voice returned.

“If something happens to her father, she'll inherit everything.”

Olivia replied.

“And if she doesn't?”

Michael laughed.

“Then we'll make sure she does.”

Evelyn's knees weakened.

Daniel caught her.

The recording continued.

Olivia spoke quietly.

“There's just one problem.”

“What?”

“Evelyn's father doesn't trust you.”

Michael's voice became cold.

“Then we'll remove the problem.”

The tape ended.

Evelyn sat on the basement floor.

Her father's death.

Her inheritance.

Olivia.

Michael.

She remembered the night her father died.

Doctors had called it a heart attack.

He had been healthy.

No warning.

No obvious cause.

She had never questioned it.

Why would she?

Olivia had cried beside her.

Michael had held her hand.

Both had told her they were family.

Daniel knelt beside her.

“There was more on the tape.”

“What?”

He pointed toward the cassette.

“It had been cut.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“Because the tape suddenly ends.”

She stared at the machine.

Then they heard something upstairs.

A floorboard creaked.

Daniel stood.

“Stay here.”

Evelyn grabbed his sleeve.

“No.”

A second creak.

Someone was inside the house.

Daniel reached for his phone.

Before he could call anyone, the basement lights went out.

Darkness swallowed them.

Then a voice came from upstairs.

A familiar voice.

One Evelyn had not heard in three years.

“Evelyn?”

May you like

Her blood froze.

Olivia.
